Jean had fought a brain tumor for several years & looked like she was winning the fight when it was discovered she had cancer of the liver. When anyone asked how she was doing, she would always answer, "I'm doing fine." Now Jean is truly doing fine in God's hands. Hugh C. Simpson

Simpson, Hugh C., died at Little Creek Sanitarium Sunday, December 19, 1999. Born February 21, 1903 in South Knoxville to James Ransom and Ada Francis Simpson. Graduated from Knoxville High School, where he played football and was cadet captain of the R.O.T.C. and UT College of Law, class of 1927. Early in his legal career, he authored an amendment to the Tennessee Constitution regarding Justice of the Peace Courts which led to the establishment of General Sessions Courts in 1939. He was later appointed by Governor Cooper to serve as one of the first General Sessions Judges in Knox County. In 1962 he was appointed by the late Senator Albert Gore and Senator Estes Kefauver to serve as Administrative Law Judge in the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. After his retirement from the bench in 1977, he served as chair of the Knoxville Bar Archives Committee until his resignation in 1993 due to health reasons. He also was actively involved in the Knoxville City Charter Revision Committee. Member of First Baptist Church, Elks Club, and Knoxville Bar Association. Preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Virginia M. Simpson; brothers: Jesse F., James Ransom, Jr., and David L. Simpson. Brother: Colonel Ray M. Simpson and wife Helen of Knoxville Graveside service will be Tuesday, 11:00 AM at Woodlawn Cemetery with Dr. David Hull officiating.
