She was a graduate of Moorehead State Teachers College in Kentucky in 1939 and taught elementary school for several years. She met her late husband J.P. "Simmie" Sanders when he made a forced landing near her schoolhouse. After they were married in 1943, they operated Sanders Cycle Company, a dealership for Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
