L. Ruth Johnson

L. Ruth Johnson of Knoxville, TN died Friday, May 28, 1999 at the age of 86 years. Born in Seymour, TN, graduate of Chilhowee Academy. She was the last of 12 children of Newman and Mary Johnson of Seymour. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church where she and her sister, Grace served in the Junior Dept. for several years. Her house was always opened to family and friends throughout her lifetime. She shared this home with her sisters Grace Johnson, and Pearl Ford. She is survived by sister-in-law Cleo Johnson and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Chilhowee Cemetery, Seymour, TN Tuesday, June 1 at 3 PM. Rev. George Hollander and Rev. Rich Irwin officiating. Family and friends may call at their convenience Monday, May 31 and Tuesday morning at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Hwy.

Zilla M. Hatcher

Hatcher, Zilla M., age 93, formerly of Knoxville, passed away Sunday, May 30, 1999 at Lakebridge Health Care Center in Johnson City, TN. She was a member of New Prospect Presbyterian Church in Knoxville and taught 42 years in the Knox County and Knoxville City School Systems before retiring in 1972. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther G. Hatcher - Sons Denton L. Hatcher and Alfred S. Hatcher, and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by her granddaughter, Teresa Hensley - Great grandsons Cory Hensley and Jeremy Hensley - Brother, Harrison McLemore and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, June 2, at New Prospect Presbyterian Church, with Rev. George Waters officiating. Interment will follow at New Prospect Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Family will receive friends 6-8 pm Tuesday, June 1, at Berry Funeral Home (Chapman Highway).

Graveside service 2 PM Tuesday Tennessee Veteran's Cemetery, Rev. Harry Mynatt officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by East Tennessee Veteran Honor Guard. Board member of East Tennessee Children's Rehabilitation Center, Arthritis Foundation, and Easter Seals. She was the First Lady of Knoxville in 1975. Survived by son: Dr. William G. and wife Betty Byrd; stepsons: Mr. Rick Alexander and wife Elaine; Mr. David Alexander and wife Delores; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren. Graveside service 11:00 AM Monday, Highland Memorial Cemetery, Rev. Mark Knisley officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be Beta Sigma Phi's First Ladies of Knoxville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Arthritis Foundation 212 S. Peters Rd. Knoxville, TN. 37923; or Graystone Presbyterian Church, 139 Woodlawn Pike Knoxville, TN. 37920. Mae E. Taylor Witt

Witt, Mae E. Taylor, age 89, of Knoxville, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, April 4, 1999 at Hillcrest South Health Care Center. She was raised in Nashville at Tennessee Baptist Orphans Home. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Survivors: husband of 69 years, Floyd Witt; son and daughter-in-law, Clyde and Marilyn Witt; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Alice and Kent Simpson; grandchildren, Steve Simpson, Jill Smith, Pamela Simpson, Anita Overton, Marjorie Spenser, Kathy Cardwell and Chris Witt; fourteen great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter; one brother, Altman Taylor. Funeral services will be Thursday 1:00 PM at Berry Funeral Home. Dr. Bob Easley will officiate. Interment will follow in Highland South Cemetery, Chapman Highway. Honorary pallbearers: Alvin Blake, Bill Gary, Bob Maples, Tom Blake, Lee Overton and Paul Smith. The family will receive friends Wednesday 6 to 8 PM at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Frye, Lester (Buck), age 80 of Knoxville, died Sunday, April 4, 1999. Preceded in death by wife, Ruth Collins Frye and a son, Danny Wayne Frye. Survivors: sons, Bobby and Jimmy Frye; daughter, Carolyn Pitts; 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn and Betty; brothers, Gene, J.W., Kenneth, Glen and Ronnie, all of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will meet at 1:15 PM Wednesday at Berry Funeral Home and proceed to Highland South Cemetery for a 2 PM graveside service. Rev. Steve Grind will officiate.
