Lemons, William Raymond "Tom", born October 25, 1914 in a log cabin in Tacket Creek, Jellico, TN, died at home Sunday, September 17, 2000, after a brief battle with stomach cancer. Mr. Lemons was a graduate of Jellico High School in 1935. After working in the coal mines and for Southern Railroad, he earned a BS degree from the University of TN. He worked for the Social Security Office for 19 years before his retirement in 1975. Preceded in death by beloved wife, Doshia Lee Copeland Lemons; parents, Lexuel & Lissie Lemons; brother, Charles Lemons. Daughter: Hope L. Ret. Lt. Col. Ray M. Simpson

Simpson, Ret. Lt. Col. Ray M., age 87 of Knoxville, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2000 at his residence. He was a member of Lake Forest Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. As a new 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Mr. Simpson was assigned to Fort Jackson, South Carolina in 1940. In 1942, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and transferred to Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. Afterwards, Mr. Simpson served overseas, first in North Africa and then in Italy. He was in Rome on June 3, 1944, with the Fifth Army when Rome was captured by the Allies. He later served with the 88th Division assigned to the Brenner Pass. After the war ended, Mr. Simpson was assigned as a Military Government Officer in occupied Germany. In 1950, then Major Simpson returned to Knoxville. Three years later, he served in the Korean War. While in the United States Army, Lt. Colonel Simpson was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Occupation Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal, American Theater Medal, EAME Metal, and the National Defense Service Medal. In 1960, after more than 29 years of reserve and active service, Mr. Simpson retired and returned to Knoxville. For the next 15 years, he taught history and economics at West High School. Wife: Helen Campbell Simpson Funeral services will be conducted at Lake Forest Presbyterian Church 11:00 AM Wednesday with Rev. Kirk Werner officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by a military unit from Ft. Campbell, KY. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Lake Forest Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 714 E.
