Smith, Anna Mae Johnson, age 91, went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 2, 2002 in San Antonio, Texas. Mrs. Smith was a life long resident of Knox County, except for the last 3 1/2 years. She devoted her life to her family. She loved to cook for family and friends and loved flower gardening inside and out. She graduated from Knoxville High School and was a long time member of Meridian Baptist Church and Bethany Sunday School class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Bruce Smith. Daughter, Bobbie Smith Love and son-in-law, Bill Love; grandchildren, Sherry Love Beaman and husband, Jeff, Bill Love and wife, Christy, Mike Love and wife, Lisa, Greg Love and wife, Susan; great grandchildren, Shannon and Katie Beaman, Mandy and Allie Love, Benjamin Love and Abby and Caroline Love. Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, December 7, 2002 at Woodlawn Cemetery with Rev. Dana Fachman officiating. Those who desire may send donations to a charity of your choice. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 6, 2002 from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Linda Rebecca Cate

Cate, Linda Rebecca, age 94 of Kodak, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church, Strawberry Plains. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Howard B. Cate. Special granddaughter, Shirley Bible and a host of other relatives. Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at Pollard's Cemetery in Kodak, with Rev. Randy Troutman officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Lupus Foundation, 10409 Lovell Center Drive, Knoxville, TN 37922 in memory of Evelyn Mae Cates. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

James Albert West

West, James Albert "Big Buddy", age 78 of South Knoxville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 1, 2002 at his home, with his family by his side. He was a member of the Valley View Baptist Church in Knoxville. He was a Tech Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by parents, Albert and Stella West; brother, Roy West; and sisters, Alberta Vinsant and Hazel Bennett. Wife of 52 years, Pearl V. West of Knoxville; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Kenneth Boles of Knoxville; son and daughter-in-law, Sam and LeAnne West of Rockford, TN; granddaughter and husband, Misty and Joe Kelley of Halls; special great-grandson, Jeremy R. Kelley "Little Buddy"; sisters, Dorothy Caldwell of Seymour, Blanche Quinn of Knoxville, and Mildred Gorman of Maryland. He had several nieces and nephews and friends of family. Funeral service 8:00 PM Wednesday, Berry Chapel, with Rev. Dewey Cooper officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors by Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard on Thursday at 9:30 AM. Pallbearers will be friends and family of Mr. West. Honorary pallbearers are Dennis R. Scates and Kenneth R. Miller. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Ruby Long

Long, Ruby Helen, age 83, of Knoxville passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2002 at Hillcrest South Nursing Home. She is remembered as a great cook and housewife. She was preceded in death by husband James Franklin Long and son Jimmy Long Jr. Son, Jack Long of San Antonio, Texas; daughters Carol Kay of Acworth, Ga. and Betty Rollins of Emerson, Ga.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 at 1:00 PM at Mt. Olive Cemetery. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Ann Miles Callis Hamrick

Hamrick, Ann Miles Callis, age 69 of Knoxville, passed away peacefully at home after a long struggle with ovarian cancer. Preceded in death by parents, Raymond and Molly Miles. She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Nursing. She was active in several organizations while her children were growing up and then returned to nursing in 1974 where she specialized in coronary care nursing. She worked as a registered nurse at St. Mary's until her retirement. Children, Cathy Callis, Sandy Callis, Jim Callis and wife, Maira, and Charlie Callis; 4 grandchildren; sister, Betty Miles Ivey; 1 niece and 2 nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Louise Webb Whittle

Louise Webb Whittle, age 101, died at her home in Gatlinburg, Tennessee on Sunday, December 22, 2002. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Gatlinburg for over 50 years. Mrs. Whittle was preceded in death by her husband Herbert P. Whittle, Sr. They were married for over fifty years and operated Whittle Drugs in Gatlinburg for more than 25 years. Survivors: Sons and their families: Herbert and Rita Whittle; Bob and Jo Whittle Four grandchildren Five great-grandchildren One great-great-grandchild Many friends in Gatlinburg The family will receive friends 11 AM – 1 PM with funeral service to follow immediately at 1 PM Tuesday, December 24th at Atchley’s Smoky Mountain Chapel in Pigeon Forge. Pastor Eric Rieger will officiate. Interment will follow in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens, Pigeon Forge. Jack Newman Reed, age 73 of Seymour, died Sunday, December 22, 2002 at Sevier County Health Care Center. He was of the Baptist faith, and a retired truck driver. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Bruce Reed and Essie Atchley Reed, and two sisters. Survivors: Wife of 51 years: Wilma Gibson Reed Children: Barbara Beitzel Jimmy Reed and wife Kaye Robert Reed Benny Reed and wife Debbie Jesse Dean Reed and wife Linda Seven Grandchildren and one Great Grandchild Funeral service 7 PM Thursday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Chet Latham officiating. Interment 10 AM Friday in Boyd’s Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Thursday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.

Charlie Floyd Nichols, Jr.

Charlie Floyd Nichols, Jr., age 68 of Seymour, died Sunday, December 22, 2002 at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Dripping Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene Miller Nichols; parents, Charlie Floyd and Nancy Ella Helton Nichols, Sr; brothers, William and Harold Nichols; sisters, Mammie Lou King, Juanita Lawson, and Alberta Rutherford. Mr. Nichols is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral service 7 PM Monday in the East Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Gossett officiating. Carsten (C.B.) Bringloe Moody, Jr.

Moody, Carsten (C.B.) Bringloe, Jr. -age 75 of Friendsville, a long time Knoxville television engineer, passed away Monday night at U.T. Hospital, following a brief illness. He was a graduate of the Georgia Military College and earned a degree in electronics from the Devry Institute in Chicago. He served his country with two stints in the military, first in the Coast Guard and later in the Army. Moody's first job in TV was with a television station in Chattanooga. In the mid-fifties he was hired by WATE TV in Knoxville as Assistant Chief Engineer. His skills soon caught the attention of the Radio Corporation of America. He was hired by RCA as a Field Representative based out of Memphis but traveled the Eastern United States helping to set up RCA video installations at the major networks and even in the White House. The lure of East Tennessee brought him back to Knoxville in the late 60's and employment with WBIR TV. He served as a transmitter engineer and video operator in control room operations for WBIR until his retirement 10 years ago. Throughout his adult life, Moody was a strong boating enthusiast. For many years he was a member of Knoxville famed precision boating team, "The Flying Boatmen," and was recently featured on a Heartland Series episode about the boating team. With his wife, Joy, he became enamored with larger boats in recent years and owned big cruisers and houseboats. Only recently, he and Joy moved from their mountaintop home in South Knoxville to a smaller lakefront home in Friendsville where they could park their 47' houseboat at their own dock. A native of Georgia but a resident of Knoxville for almost 50 years, Moody was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Norma Beeler Moody. He is survived by his wife, Joy; son, Carsten Moody III; stepchildren; and to his delight, step-grandchildren; and sister, Julia May of Norcross, Georgia. Memorial service 8:00 p.m. Friday, Berry Chapel, with Rev. Dana Fachman officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meridian Baptist Church Youth Fund, 6513 Chapman Highway, Knoxville, Tennessee 37920. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

John Ogle

Preceded in death by parents, Anna Mae and Theodore Ogle; and brother, Earnest C. Ogle. Survivors include wife, Mary (Peggy) Ogle; sons, Johnny and Joan Ogle of White, Georgia; Bobby and Pam Ogle of LaFollette; and Jimmy Ogle of Knoxville, daughters, Evangeline and Roger Phillips of Oak Ridge; Carlene Bowles of Knoxville; and Emma Faye Holcomb of Astabula, Ohio; brothers, Ted Ogle of Curtice, Ohio; Bill and Janette Ogle of Double Springs, Al.; and Don and Judy Ogle of Loudon, Tn.; sister, Freda and Bob Jernigan of Knoxville; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; several step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Harold M. Reed

Harold M. Reed, age 74 of Knoxville, died Monday, December 23, 2002 at the Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee. He attended Bays Mountain Baptist Church, and was retired after 40 years of service from Sanitary Laundry and Drycleaners in Knoxville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mack and Minnie Reed and brother, Paul Reed. Survivors: Wife: Marian Reed Sister: Irene Latham Niece: Mary Ellen Loveday and husband Jim Nephew: Trent Reed Great-Niece: Beth Loveday Great-Nephews: Charlie Loveday and Trent Reed, Jr Funeral service 1 PM Thursday in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Brother Hubert Troutman and Brother Mike Caldwell officiating. Interment to follow in Chilhowee Cemetery. The family will receive friends 12-1 PM Thursday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
