Harold Martin Fernander, age 85 of Sevierville, Tennessee, formerly of Miami, Florida, died Friday, October 18, 2002. He was born in Nassau, Bahamas. He was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. He belonged to the Asbestos Workers International, local #60. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Fernander. Survivors: Son and Daughter-in-law: Dennis H. and Nancy Fernander Daughter and Son-in-law: Kay Elise and Charles I. Poole Grandchildren: Garrett Fernander, Corey Fernander, Ryan Poole, Justin Poole, Kaitlin Poole Brother: Thomas Fernander of Sebastian Inlet, Florida Sister: Gertrude Martin of Franklin, Florida Family and friends will meet 11:30 AM Tuesday at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery for Graveside service. Lieutenant Joseph D. (Ret) McNally, Jr.

McNally, Joseph D., Jr., Lieutenant Colonel (retired), was born in Washington, DC, August 2, 1949. He entered the Army and was commissioned at age 19 as an Infantry Lieutenant and served initially with the 3rd Special Forces Group. He served in command positions from Infantry Platoon and Company Commander to staff positions as an Armored Calvary Squadron and Regimental Operations Officer. He retired as Lieutenant Colonel after 29 years of active and reserve service with numerous awards and decorations, among them the Expert Infantry Badge and the Parachutist Badge. He is a graduate of the Army Automated Data Processing School, the Nuclear Chemical Target Analysis Course and United States Army Command and General Staff College. After receiving his degree in Microbiology from the University of Tennessee, he worked 4 years in research labs at UT Hospital Research Center and the UT Department of Microbiology. Joe has 30 years of experience in EMS and is certified as a hazardous materials specialist as well as a sworn Special Officer with the Knoxville Police Department. He served on the Board of Directors Volunteer Rescue Squad, Advisory Board of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine EMS Committee, and member of the Red Cross Disaster Committee. He began working with Knoxville Emergency Management Agency in 1990 and served in 3 positions in the department prior to being appointed as Director by the Mayor and County Executive on March 14, 1995. Daughter, Amanda McNally; son, Dan McNally; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Chuck Seigrist; brother, Mark McNally. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Berry Chapel, with Father John O'Neal officiating. Interment will follow at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery with honors by the Knoxville Police Department Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be: Holt Clark, Alan Lawson, Chuck Seigrist, Mark McNally, Scott Sassone, and Erik Andersen. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Knoxville Volunteer Rescue Squad, 512 N. Chilhowee Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37914. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Leola Overton Pittman

Pittman, Leola Overton, age 84, of North Knoxville, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2002. She was a member of Bookwalter United Methodist Church and the Gold Star Mothers and was retired from United American Bank. She was preceded in death by son, Ronnie Knight and brother, Albert L. Overton, Jr. husband, George E. Pittman; step-daughter, Carolyn Pittman Sharp; sister-in-law, Betty Overton; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Dot Lane. The family will receive friends from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Monday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway. Following visitation, family and friends will proceed to Woodlawn Cemetery in procession for a 2:00 p.m. graveside service, with officiating. Willard Dennis Midgette

Willard Dennis Midgette, age 64 of Wears Valley, died Saturday, October 19, 2002. Mr. Midgette played professional baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers and was a retired school teacher with the Polk County, Florida school system. Mr. Midgette had lived in Wears Valley since 1997. Survivors: Sons: David Midgette and Willard Dennis Midgette Mother: Eulalie M. Martin Sister: Donna Martin Funeral service 2 PM Thursday in Atchley’s Smoky Mountain Chapel with Rev. Keith G. Knight officiating. Interment will follow in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Wednesday at Atchley’s Smoky Mountain Chapel, Pigeon Forge.

Dorothy Lockett Francis

Francis, Dorothy Lockett, age 81 of Knoxville, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2002, at Asbury Acres. She was a member of the South Knoxville Baptist Church, member of the Joy Sunday school class. She served as a Child Labor Law Inspector for 15 years with the state of Tennessee. She is preceded in death by her daughters, Catherine Byerley, Judith Francis, Patricia Francis; son, Jerry Frances; parents, Woodley Ann and Thomas W. Lockett; brothers, James, Robert, Albert, Buddy, and Thomas Lockett; sisters, Mary Elkins and Betty Lockett. Her daughters, Elizabeth Harper, Becky Rhinehart, and Rhinda Mowery; son, Ronnie Francis; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren; brother, Charles D. Lockett. Funeral services will be at 12 noon on Wednesday, October 23, 2002 in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. prior to the service with interment following at Woodlawn Cemetery.
