Elizabeth Pauline (Polly) Chambers
Dated: September 07 2002
Chambers, Elizabeth Pauline (Polly) age 91 of South Knoxville, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2002 at Baptist Hospital. She was the daughter of Sam and Julia McCroskey. Mrs. Chambers was preceded in death by her husband, James Paul Chambers; sons, James Leonard (Granny) Chambers and James Joe Chambers. She was a member of French Broad Valley Baptist Church in Kodak. Daughter, Julia Chambers (Judy) Lane; granddaughters, Denise Lane Smith and husband, Greg, Robin Chambers Womack and Carrie Jo Chambers and husband, Jon; great-grandchildren, Lauren Womack and Jake Smith; sister-in-law, Rosie McCroskey. Family and friends will meet at Woodlawn Cemetery Wednesday, September 11 for a graveside services at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Charlie Harkleroad officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Frank Ensley
Dated: September 07 2002
Ensley, Frank, age 85, a resident of Knox County, died Saturday, September 7, 2002 after a brief illness. Born August 12, 1917 in Jackson County, NC, he was the last surviving child of the late Tolvin B. Josephine Middleton Ensley, of Jackson County. The Middleton and Ensley families were among the earliest settlers in Jackson County (formerly Buncombe/Haywood County) NC. An area known as Polly Middleton Gap, located in the Canada Community of Jackson County, was named after his great-grandmother, Mary "Polly" Middleton, widow of Nathan Middleton, who was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863. He was a WWII veteran, and after the war, moved to Knoxville, TN in l945, where he became Postmaster in the small community of Neubert Springs, TN. He retired from the Knoxville, TN Post Office in 1980 where he worked as a supervisor. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Three children, Kenneth and Frank Ensley, Jr. Lynda Ensley Webster, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A private funeral service was held Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Knoxville, TN. Condolences may be addressed to: The Ensley Family, 2331 Winners Drive, Knoxville, TN 37920. Memorials may be made to the Knox County Animal Shelter in memory of his beloved dog, "Sparky". Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway, Knoxville, TN.

Viola Ownby Matthews

Viola Matthews, age 89 of Sevierville, went to be with the Lord Friday, September 6, 2002 at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Matthews and sons, Shirl, Bob, and R.L. Matthews. Survivors: Daughters: Freda Seaton and Pauline Rauhuff Sister: Evelyn King Brothers: Earl, Loy, Glen, and Eugene Ownby 19 Grandchildren 34 Great Grandchildren 13 Great-Great Grandchildren Funeral service 2 PM Sunday in the West +Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with Rev. Al Smith and Rev. Tim Rauhuff officiating. Interment will follow in Cartertown Cemetery.

Vaughn Popejoy

Popejoy, Vaughn E., age 79, beloved husband, father and grandfather went to be with the Lord Friday, September 6, 2002 at his home in Dandridge, TN. He served with the US Army during WWII and he was a retired Assistant Chief with the Knoxville Fire Department having retired in 1989 with 43 years service. He and a fellow firefighter, J.O Harrison organized the Knoxville Firefighters Federal Credit Union. He was a member of Alice Belle Baptist Church and was recently attending Swann’s Chapel Baptist Church in Dandridge. He was a 50 Year member of Masonic Lodge #244 F&AM; and was a Scottish Rite member. He was preceded in death by parents, William Scott and Nina Bryant Popejoy; brother, William Scott Popejoy, Jr. and Theodore L. Popejoy; sister, Evelyn Popejoy Duff; granddaughter, Tracy Thompson. Survivors, wife of 51 years, Jean Hamby Popejoy; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Pete Morie, Dandridge, Karen and Gary Arnold, Mobile, AL; daughter, Janice Lynn Fox, Knoxville; son and daughter-in-law, Vaughn Jr. (Skip) and Vivian Popejoy, Knoxville; son, Jeffrey Ted Popejoy, Dandridge; 11 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; Brothers, Vernon Popejoy, Knoxville, Harry Popejoy Concord and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 8:00 PM Monday at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel with Rev. Bobby Kitts, Chaplain Carl Ford, Knoxville Fire Dept. and Rev. Steven Grindstaff officiating. Interment will follow graveside services 11:00 AM Tuesday at Lynnhurst Cemetery, with honors provided by the Knoxville Fire Department Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be selected from Knoxville Fire Dept. Firefighters. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 PM Monday at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, 2300 W. Adair Dr.

Rosa M. Miller

Miller, Rosa M., age 60, of Knoxville, passed away Friday, September 6, 2002. She was a member of American Baptist Church. Husband Richard J. Miller; sister, Mary Ann Sanders; brothers: James Babb; George Babb and wife, Wanda; Jack Babb and wife Aileen; Ralph Babb and wife Aletha; sister-in-law Wilma Babb; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service Sunday, 7:00 PM, Berry Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Charlie McGill officiating. Family and friends will meet at 11:00 AM Monday at Babb Cemetery in Loudon County for interment services. Pallbearers will be nephews. Family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Sunday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Lurell Powell

Powell, Lurell, age 72, of Knoxville, passed away peacefully at Park West Hospital on Thursday, September 5, 2002, from acute respiratory failure. Born September 16, 1929, in Tupelo, MS, he was preceded in death by parents, James Claude and Maudie Mae; three brothers, Bordo, Razzie, and Ernest; and four sisters, Claudia, Azilee, Mattie Sue, and Regina. He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Laverne; two brothers, Fred and Jonathan; two sisters, Agnes Johnson and Mary Nell Farris, of Tupelo, MS; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Randy Balogh of Lebanon, OH; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Hobbie Sealy of Montgomery, AL; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Julie Powell of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren, Ginger Cronogue of Cordova, TN, Emily Sealy of Montgomery, AL, Joshua, Anna and Zachary Powell of Knoxville, TN; and great-grandson, Jacob Cronogue of Cordova, TN. He served in the United States Naval Reserve from 1949-1950. He retired in 1991 after a long career as a highly respected sub-contractor of carpet installation. Lurell was of Pentecostal faith and loved the Lord. A special service of remembrance will be held from 2:30 PM until 4:30 PM on Monday, September 9, 2002 at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Preceded in death by her parents Nellie and Roy Scruggs, brother Ford Scruggs and husband Leonard Garland. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Shelby Garland; sister Roxie Williams; sisters-in-law Ida Scruggs and Ruth Garland; brother-in-law Cleve Scarbrough; several nieces and nephews; and best friends Lillie Mae and Allen Pass, Gladys Self and Anna Mae Chasteen. Graveside service will be held Sunday, September 8, 2:00 PM at Stock Creek Baptist Church Cemetery; Rev. Steve Tuck and Rev. Charles Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Saturday September 7, 2002 at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Alice Elizabeth Clark (Betty) Brown

Brown, Alice Elizabeth Clark (Betty), age 95, of Knoxville, passed away at home Thursday, September 5, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce E. Brown. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church, Knoxville and was retired from Johnson Galyon Construction Company. Long time friend and companion, Bobbie Brewer Laugherty and her husband, Bill; nieces, Patty Lou Clark of Las Vegas, Nevada; Tomilyn Clark Engle of Citrus Heights, California; Jean Clark Black, Encino, California; Jacquelyn Clark Lewis, Palo Alto, California; Nancy Brown Thompson, Knoxville; nephew, Thomas W. Clark, Jr., Lincoln, California; and several great-nieces and nephews. Family and friends will meet at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery for a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. David Hull officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, Knoxville, Renovation Fund, 510 Main Street, Knoxville, Tennessee 37902. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

James was a member of Meadow View Baptist Church in Knoxville, TN and a life member of over 50 years with the Brotherhood Carpenters and Joiners Local 50 in Knoxville, TN. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Edna Jones Survivors: Wife of 59 years: Mary Trentham Christopher Son: Dennis Christopher and wife Charlotte Daughter: Linda Carroll and husband Bill Grandsons: Darrell Christopher, Kenny Christopher and wife Sue Ann, Brian Christopher and wife Melisa Brothers-in-law: Lee Roy Jones, and Eugene Carver Several nieces and Nephews Family and friends will meet 10 AM Saturday at Highland South Cemetery for Graveside Service and Interment with the Rev. Levi Tarwater, Jr., age 63 of Sevierville, died Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at his home. He was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. He was employed for 35 years at Roehl Construction Company in Knoxville, serving most of those years as job supervisor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Levi and Anna Mae Tarwater, brothers, Glenn, Frank, and Norman Tarwater, Sisters, Ailene, and Peggy. Survivors: Wife: Rosie Dockery Tarwater Sons: Scott Tarwater and friend Mary Ruth Spence Martin Tarwater and wife Linda Daughter: Sheila Gibson and husband Gary Grandchildren: Travis Tarwater, Justin Gibson, Lori Gibson, Tausha Tarwater Sister: Juanita Keasler Niece: Dorothy Dellinger Special friends: James and Linda Parton, Travis Spence, and Melanie Spence Funeral service 2 PM Saturday in Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. She was a retired registered nurse anesthetist at Harlan Appalachian Memorial Hospital in Harlan, Kentucky. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Loyall, Kentucky. Preceded in death by husband, George Wilhelmi; parents, Henry Rolen and Myrtle Rolen Houser; son, Marvin Rolen; brothers, Homer and Gaston Rolen; sister, Marie Day.
