Wood, Ruth Morton, born August 21, 1907 in Martel, TN, died September 29, 2002 at Hillcrest South Nursing Home. She attended Lenoir City High School, Maryville College, and graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1928. She retired in 1977 from teaching Biology for 25 years at Pennsauken High School in New Jersey. She had taught most of her life in several states including Tennessee. She had been a member of Martel Methodist Church, Lenoir City, TN, Asbury Methodist Church, Cinnaminson, NJ and was at the time of her death a member of Colonial Heights United Methodist Church, Knoxville. She was a past vice-president of Mount Vista Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Houston and Georgia Mahaffey Morton; brother Victor; and husband Donald S. Wood. Son, Alan, and his wife Patricia of Knoxville, TN, their sons Kenneth, Donald, and Jeffrey, and daughter Jennifer; son Gerald, and his wife Judith of Springhill, LA and their two daughters, Annmarie and Michelle; 8 great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives. Our thanks to the staff and personnel at Hillcrest South Nursing Home for all their efforts. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2:00 PM at Berry Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Robert Countiss officiating. Graveside services will follow the service at Martel Methodist Church Cemetery for the family. Colonel George L. Hannah

Hannah, Colonel George L., Jr., a much decorated Air Force pilot has made his final approach to Heaven's gate. During his thirty years of service he lived in nine foreign countries, circled the globe seven times, and logged over 9,000 pilot hours in fourteen different types of aircraft. He served his country in World War II, the Korean War and then in Vietnam. His renditions of his many adventures as well as his wit and charm will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him. Colonel Hannah was preceded in death by the late Hope Justice Hannah, his wife of 52 years; parents, George and Minnie; brothers, Hobart and Ben; sisters, Elizabeth, Neva, Bess, Tomy, Hazel and Thelma; and daughter-in-law, Karen. His wife and love for the last ten years, Nita; son, George L. Hannah, III and wife, Susan; daughter, Burma Jo Poston and husband, Patrick; step-daughter and friend, Beverly Byars; step-son, Russ Noe; niece, Catherine Hutchins and husband, Bob; sister-in-law, Elise Hannah; grandchildren: Carter, Vikki, Jan, Lori and husband, Jim, Bart, Steve and Ron; great-grandchildren: Tristin, Samantha, Hannah, Catherine, and Courtney; special friends: Dorsey Lou and Charles Woliver, Don and Jane Fezzel, Mary Lou and Ed Griffin, Jerry and Jim Elliott, and many more too numerous to name in Knoxville, Townsend, and Naples Florida. Visitation with the family will be Saturday, October 5, 2002 from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway, with a memorial service to follow with Rev. Al Green and Rev. Deron Cobb officiating. Military honors will be conducted by East Tennessee State Veteran Honor Guard.

Dr. James L. (Doc) Baxter

Baxter, Dr. James L. (Doc), age 53, of Seymour, passed away suddenly August 31, 2002 at his home. He was very active in the Sertoma Club and the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member, choir member, and Lector of St Joseph the Carpenter Episcopal Church. Dr. Baxter attended TTU, received his doctorate in veterinary medicine from Auburn University. He was a veterinarian at Airport Animal Clinic, Crossroads Animal Clinic, Animal Clinic of Maynardville and Knoxville Pet Emergency Clinic. Preceded in death by mother, Mary Frances Baker Baxter. He was an avid fisherman. He made many friends in his 13 years of recovery through AA. He was a very loving husband and family man. Wife of 18 years, Sharon Baxter; daughter and son-in-law, Beth & Hawkeye Brown; daughters, Kathy Baxter and Crystal Baxter; son, Patrick Baxter; grandchildren, Kayla and Cody Graves; father, Tracy Baxter; brother, John T. & wife Carol Baxter; sister, Lynda "Susie" Baxter Acuff and husband Don; several nieces and nephews; special friends: Father Rob, David Clark, Scott Townsend, Tom Humpston, Patrick Carr, Frank Snyder and numerous others. Mary Emma Cook Birden

Mary Emma Cook Birden, age 77 of Sevierville, died Friday, August 30, 2002 at Sevier County Health Care Center. She was a long time member and ordained Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Sevierville. She was born January 14, 1925 in Alabama to Ollis and Mary Jane Williams Cook. Mary retired from Smoky Mountain Vending following 47 years of service as the kitchen manager responsible for purchasing and preparation of food items. Mary’s other interest included teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir, the Women’s Association of the church in which she served several terms as President. Outside the church, Mary also served several terms as President of the Sevier County Medical Center volunteers and was a faithful volunteer at the Sevier Food Ministries. Within her housing complex she taught a weekly Bible study and published a monthly newsletter for residents. In 1999, Mary was nominated and selected as one of twelve Sevier County residents to be designated a Living Treasure in Mary O. Stone’s book, “Sevier County Living Treasures – Celebrating Affirmative Aging”. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul B. Birden, who died in 1977, her parents and seven siblings.
