Helen Campbell Simpson
Dated: August 05 2002
Simpson, Helen Campbell, age 87, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, August 5, 2002. She was a member of Lake Forest Presbyterian Church and was active in the women's ministry. Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Retired Lieutenant Colonel, Ray M. Simpson, and her son, Knoxville Attorney Robert Roeder Simpson. Robert J. Simpson and Katharine E. Simpson, her grandchildren; sister-in-law, Sarah Reed Simpson; and niece, Doris Jean Lusk. Helen was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was related to Tennessee State Representative, Harry T. Burn, who in 1920 cast the pivotal vote for ratification of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, giving women the right to participate in the nations political process. Helen spent most of her life in Knoxville, but she traveled with her husband through out his military career, including when he served as a Military Government Officer in occupied Germany after World War II. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 7th at Lake Forest Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Lake Forest Presbyterian Church with Reverend Kirk Werner officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Lake Forest Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 714 E. Lake Forest Drive, Knoxville, TN 37920. Arrangements by Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

Jess W. Taylor

Taylor, Jess W., age 76, of South Knoxville, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 6, 2002. Member of the Church of God. Retired in 1986 from Rohm and Haas. He loved to play the bass fiddle and the bass guitar. In the past, he played the bass guitar with the Chordsmen Quartet and the Ken Apple Family Singers. He was preceded in death by wife, Mable Taylor; parents, John and Daisy Taylor; sister, Palestine Jones. Daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Rev. Norman Stallings; sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Lou Ann Taylor, Danny and Jenny Taylor; grandchildren: Marc Stallings, Chrystal Stallings, Ben Taylor, Tom Taylor, David Taylor, and Karen Taylor; great-grandchild, Hope Stallings; brother and sister-in-law, John Weldon and Pat Taylor; sister, Judy Blanche Wilson; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service 8:00 p.m. Thursday, Berry Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Norman Stallings and Danny Taylor officiating. Family and friends will meet at Highland Memorial Cemetery Friday at 11:00 a.m. for interment services. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway.

William Arlie Vance

William Arlie Vance, age 69 of Pigeon Forge, died Tuesday, August 6, 2002. He was preceded in death by his sisters Stella Vance, Aldmeda Adams; brother Edrow Vance. Mattie Ree Hester Knowlton

Knowlton, Mattie Ree Hester died on Thursday, August 8, 2002 in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was the widow of Frank Gibson Hester, who preceded her in death in 2002. Her parents, the late William Thomas and Corrie Joyner Robinson of Atmore, Alabama; her sisters, Mildred Robinson Lowrey, Willie Mae Robinson, and a brother, Otha Leo Robinson preceded her in death. Mrs. Knowlton was born in Robinsonville, Alabama on March 25, 1912. She taught school in Atmore and Montgomery and was employed with the state of Alabama for 25 years. She was a member of Forest Park Baptist Church for 43 years. Two daughters, Patricia Hester Neal of South Carolina and Jeanne Hester Mitchell of Tennessee; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Graveside services will be held on Saturday 3:00 p.m. at Oakwood Annex. The family will greet friends after the service and requests that flowers be omitted. Frank David Jordan III
Dated: August 10 2002
Jordan, Frank (David) III, age 48, of South Knoxville, passed away suddenly Saturday, August 10, 2002. From 1972 - 1975, David attended the University of Tennessee where he was a member of the Pride of the Southland Marching Band. Later, he graduated with high honors from Maryville College. While attending Maryville College, he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Lambda Society. David was an active member of Lake Forest Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and sang in the choir. Other memberships included Downtown Optimist Club and ASIS. Employed by KUB for 28 years, David was serving as Security and Properties Supervisor. He also was a part-time employee of Gentry Bus Company where he enjoyed transporting the UT Football Team. David was an avid hunter and snow skier and also enjoyed refereeing soccer for TSSAA. He is preceded in death by his mother, Sally Jordan. Wife of 27 years, Carol Jordan, who is a second grade teacher at Bonny Kate Elementary School; sons, Frank David ?Davey? Jordan, IV and Andrew Chandler Jordan; father, Frank Jordan, Jr.; sister, Margaret Webb and husband Bob; father-in-law and mother-in-law, O.C. (Jack) and Jeanne Cunningham; brother-in-law, John H. Cunningham and wife Karen; nieces, Sarah Webb and Lauren Cunningham; nephew, Blake Cunningham; and several cousins. Funeral Service 6:30 PM Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at Lake Forest Presbyterian Church, Rev. Kirk Werner officiating. Family will receive friends Tuesday following the funeral service in the fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to the Lake Forest Presbyterian Audio/Visual Fund, 714 Lake Forest Dr., Knoxville, TN. 37920. Family and friends will meet at 10:30 AM in the upper parking lot of Lake Forest Presbyterian Church and will proceed to Woodlawn Cemetery for an 11:00 AM graveside service.
