John M. Boatman, age 67 of Sevierville, Tennessee, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was born October 26, 1934 in Algood, Tennessee. Mr. Boatman attended Cookeville High School and Tennessee Technology University in Cookeville, TN. He was a USNR Naval Aviator from 1954-1959. He was a member of Tennessee Quality Awards. He served as a managing partner for Marketing Connections and was formerly was president and CEO of Vamistor Corporation in Sevierville,TN. He was a member of Gap Creek Church, retired Knox County School teacher of 34 years, antique dealer for over 25 years, and a farmer. Preceded in death by step-father, E.P. Porterfield and mother, Grace Mae Porterfield; half brother, Charlie Porterfield. Wife of 55 years, Joyce Pratt; son, Donald; daughter, Rhonda; several aunts and uncles and many cousins. Colquitt, Lester H. (Les), age 79 of South Knoxville, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 3, 2002. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Sweetwater. He retired from Knoxville Police Department and Federal Security of the United States Post Office. Member of the Fraternal Order of Police Volunteer Lodge #2. Preceded in death by wife, Jewell Catherine Colquitt; son, Douglas Ira Colquitt, 6 brothers and 1 sister. Sons: Mike Colquitt and wife, Jewell; Steven Colquitt and wife, Susan; Craig Colquitt and wife, Annie; daughter, Terry Bowen and husband, Jackson; grandchildren: Jimmy Colquitt, Cheryl Mullins, Todd Colquitt, Travis Colquitt, Amanda Colquitt, Sherry Taylor, Dustin and Britton Colquitt, Catherine Bowen; 12 great-grandchildren; very special and dear friend, Mildred Schroeder; several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends in Knoxville and Sweetwater. Funeral services will be Friday, 5:00 PM, Berry Funeral Home Chapel. The family will conduct the service. Interment Saturday 11:00 AM at Magnolia Cemetery, Maryville. Melvena E. Burchfield, age 86 of Seymour, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2002 at Sevier County Health Care Center after a long period of declining health. She was born in Etowah, Tennessee, daughter of Joseph and Nancy Carter. She was the wife of John Robert Burchfield of Knoxville and Miami, Florida, who passed away in 1964. She is survived by: Daughter: Bobbie Briggs of Seymour, TN Sisters: Vada Keyees and Beulah Dyer Brother and sister-in-law: Archie and Addie Mae Carter Special niece: Johnnie Ruth Smith Special friend: Hazel Harris Many other nieces and nephews, all of the Knoxville area. She will be remembered by all who knew and loved her as a devoted wife and mother. She was a strong lady who endured much suffering, but always had a word of encouragement for others. No funeral service is planned. Interment will be with her husband in Southern Memorial Park in Miami, Florida. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville, TN.
Earsel Lee McKinney Thomas

Thomas, Earsel Lee McKinney, age 94, beloved and esteemed by all who knew her, died July 2, 2002 after an extended illness at St. Mary's Holston Health Center. Her late husband, William Lee Thomas, Sr.; a young daughter, Mary Lavinia Thomas; fourteen brothers and sisters; and her parents, Parlee and George Washington McKinney, preceded her in death. In the early 1920's, she became an active and faithful member of Immanuel Baptist Church in South Knoxville. Here she was involved until age and illness no longer allowed. In the church, she was a longtime member of the choir, helped establish the first library and served as the first librarian, served as church hostess and led the church kitchen crew for many years. She served as President of the Women's Missionary Union. Mrs. Thomas was actively involved in Summer Vacation Bible Schools for many years. She most fondly enjoyed her position as Sunday School Teacher for over 60 years. During World War II, she became a welder/solderer, employed at the Fulton Sylphon Company of Knoxville where she was chosen to work on special products used in Manhattan Project. Following the war, she obtained training and became, for several years, a clock maker, employed at the Townsend Watch Company of Knoxville. She was a member of Woodmen of the World and twice Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, South Knoxville Lodge, where she was a lifetime membe Her children, LaVerne Thomas-Eager, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and William Lee Thomas, Jr., Silver Springs, Maryland, survive her. Other survivors include daughter-in-law, Betsy Thomas, Silver Spring, Maryland; granddaughter, Michelle deAlberich, Portland, Oregon; granddaughter, Alison Beckwith and husband, Reynolds William Beckwith, Great Falls, Virginia; grandson, William Thomas, Chicago, Illinois; granddaughter, Marcia Thomas and husband, Kevin Harris, Indianapolis, Indiana; great granddaughters, Lauren Beckwith and Kristin Beckwith as well as many nieces and nephews. The family will welcome friends at Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, July 8, 2002. Funeral services will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church, Ogle Avenue, 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2002. Earsel Thomas will be buried at Woodlawn Cemetery with her husband, her young child, and other family members.
