Mr. Shirlie Haskell Allen, 82, passed away Jan. 23 at Livingston Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held Jan. 26 at Speck Funeral Home with Rev. H.S. Brown officiating. Interment followed at the Allens Chapel Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mark Gaw, Terry Gaw, Dave Garner, Mike Ayers, Phillip Morgan and Roger Hawke.
Mr. Allen was born May 3, 1922 in Overton County and attended the New Hope Community Church.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Julean Allen of Hilham; one brother, Odis Allen of Cookeville and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Campbell and Ida Masters Allen; four sisters and one brother.
Alvin Vince Walker

Mr. Alvin Vince Walker, 69, passed away Jan. 24 at Livingston Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held Jan. 26 at the Livingston Funeral Home with Bro. Nolen Cantrell and Bro. Ovle Tinch officiating.
Pallbearers were Larry Cantrell, Pat Norris, John Norris, Frank Pigg, Gary Walker and Willie Langford.
Mr. Walker was born May 1, 1935 in Overton County and was a member of the Highland Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving relatives include six daughters, Bernice Norris of Rickman, Norma Gunnels, Lois Grant, Alice Dishman, Brenda Bilbrey and Wanda Landcaster, all of Livingston; two sons, J.E. Walker and Clifford Walker, both of Livingston; one brother, Perry and wife Pauline Walker of Rickman; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Bertie S. “Stout” Walker; wife, Eudean “Phillips” Walker; daughter, Linda Walker; three sisters, Rassie Hammock, Fannie May Brown and Ova Copeland.
Vernon Swallows

Mr. Vernon Swallows, 58, passed away Jan. 26 at the Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held Jan. 28 at the Goff Funeral Home with Rev. Harlon Thompson officiating. Interment followed at the Campground Cemetery.
Mr. Swallows was born Feb. 11, 1946 in Overton County.
Surviving relatives include two sisters, Winnie Bilbrey of the Crossroads Community and Evelyn and husband Harold Thompson of the Union B Community; three brothers, Losure Swallows of Winter Haven, Fla., Leamon and wife Susie Swallows of Clarkrange, Clarence and wife Emogene Swallows of Monterey and a host of nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmus and Laura Wilson Swallows; two sisters, Velma Wilson and Erma Hargis; two brothers, Clifford and Thurman Swallows and four infant brothers and sisters.
Danny Edward Allen

Mr. Danny Edward Allen, 39, passed away Jan. 25 at Livingston Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held Jan. 27 at Speck Funeral Home with Bro. Aron Dillon and Bro. Dow Allen officiating. Interment followed at the Burris Cemetery in Jackson County.
Serving as pallbearers were Steve Landcaster, Jerry McDonald, Timmy Scantland, Bob Crabtree, Rob Shoettle and Rick Brown.
Mr. Allen was born April 5, 1965 in Putnam County.
Surviving relatives include mother and step-father, Reda and Carl Douglas Bilbrey of Livingston and father, Walter David Allen of Cookeville; one brother, Terry David Allen of the Dodson Branch Community of Cookeville; one sister Jammie Gibbons of Livingston.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Andrew Jerome Bilbrey; grandparents, Stant and Ila B. Knight, Louis and Beulah Allen and Mable Bilbrey.
Velma Olean Maxwell

Mrs. Velma Olean Maxwell, 82, passed away Jan. 29 at Livingston Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held Jan. 31 at Speck Funeral Home with Bro. Kerry Duke officiating. Interment followed at the Hilham Cemetery.
Mrs. Maxwell was born Feb. 14, 1922 in Overton County and was a member of the West End Church of Christ.
Pallbearers were Frank Ward, Billy Sullivan, Chig Parrott, Mike Tidwell, Mark Maxwell and Charles Maxwell.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Tommy and wife Linda Maxwell of Livingston and Tim and wife Trish Maxwell of Livingston; three grandchildren, Candy, Tyler and Michael Maxwell; two great-grandchildren, Shelby Lewis and Caleb Maxwell.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Grover C. and Laura B. Upton Ward; husband, Ray Lester Maxwell; one son, Ronald Ray Maxwell; two sisters, Buel Tidwell and Ozella Ward and one brother, Leonard Ward.
J. ANDREW CRABTREE
Funeral services for J. Andrew Crabtree, Sr., 81 of Battle Creek, were held April 22, 2003, at 10:30 at Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Rothy officiating. Burial followed in the Fort Cluster National Cemetery. He was born June 29, 1921, in Oakley, TN to the late Hershel and Loula Reagan Crabtree. He passed away April 19, 2003, at Tendercare Riverside.
Mr. Crabtree was employed by the Eaton Corporation, Clark Equipment and Veterans Administration Medical Center as a steam engineer. He served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII with the U.S. Marine Corps, 3rd Division, was a member of Newton United Methodist Church, a member of American Legion Post 54, Home Grange 129 and Marshall Moose Lodge 676. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed gardening. In addition to his parents, a son John A. Crabtree, Jr. and two brothers preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Annie Teeples Crabtree, a daughter Margaret and husband Larry Halder of Battle Creek, six grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, sisters Beulah White, Edna Webb and a brother Johnny Savage all of Livingston.

Funeral services for Lewis Roberson, 62 of West Columbia, SC and Angier, NC, were conducted May 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Whitson Funeral Home with Bro. Bennie Wayne Roberson and Bro. James Roberson officiating. Burial followed in the Sand Springs Cemetery in Putnam County. He was born Feb. 11, 1941, in Monterey to the late Beecher and Daisy Ford Roberson. He passed away April 27, 2003, at Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, SC.
Mr. Roberson was a self-employed carpenter. In addition to his parents, a brother Alvin Roberson preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Cassandra McCollough Roberson of West Columbia, SC, daughter Rhonda Roberson of Raleigh, NC, two son Lewis Alan Roberson of Angier, NC and Tom Roberson of Ruskin, FL, brother and sister-in-law Bennie and Alene Roberson of Rickman, two sisters and one brother-in-law Louise Brown of Cookeville and Pansy and Earl Bohannon of Dayton, OH and three grandchildren Justin Roberson of Cookeville and Melissa and Misty Roberson of Brandon, FL.
Pallbearers were Ed, James, Bennie Wayne, Kenny, Jim and Justin Roberson and Chuck Hutton.
ALBERT ‘ABB’ GORDEN CONNER
Funeral services for Albert ‘Abb’ Gorden Conner, 83 of Byrdstown, were conducted May 1, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Brown Funeral Chapel with Bro. Ricky Cross officiating. Burial followed in the Lovelady-Sims Cemetery. He was born March 4, 1920, in Pickett County to the late James Lorenzo (J.L.) and Mary Clementine Cross Conner. He passed away April 28, 2003, at Livingston Regional Hospital.
Mr. Conner was a retired saw mill and rock quarry employee and farmer. He was a member of the Wolf River Baptist Church, a Veteran of WWII, serving in the Army in the 100th Division, and a member of the Disabled Veterans Association. In addition to his parents, brothers William T. and Granville Conner, sisters Bonnie Tompkins, Nora Conner and Minnie Conner Arney and two great-grandchildren Nathaniel Farr and Dylan Stewart preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Aletha Huddleston Conner of Byrdstown, five daughters Rosie Roger and husband Mike of Albany, KY, Leta Gatlin and husband Bob of Ft. Myers Beach, FL, Lily Greene and husband Steve of Baltimore, MD, Julia Wright and husband Frank of Livingston and Mary Busby and husband Tony of Warnen Robins, GA, two sons James Conner and wife Becky of Lake Elsinore, CA and Elbert ‘Chico’ Conner and wife Tamie of Monroe, nineteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
Pallbearers were Christopher Rogers, Brad Wright, Chris and Scott Busby, James Daniel and Jeremy Conner and Michael and Kevin Neal.
OTIS FRANKLIN MOORE
Funeral services for Otis Franklin Moore, 82 of Celina, were conducted May 3, 2003, at Upton Funeral Home with Dale Strong officiating. Burial followed in the Clementsville Cemetery. He was born Dec. 25, 1920, in Castalian Springs to the late Charles W. Moore and Lissie (Copass) Moore. He passed away May 1, 2003, at Cumberland River Hospital.
Mr. Moore was retired from Chrysler Car Company. He is survived by two sons Charles W. Moore of Lynnville and James F. Moore of Clover Dale, IN, one stepson Jim Walden of Indianapolis, IN, one stepdaughter Sandy Dill of Speedway, IN, three brothers Charles W. Moore, Jr. and Clyde P. Moore of Celina and Don H. Moore of Goodlettsville, one sister Doris H. Tayler of Greenwood, IN and seven grandchildren.
MARIE HANDY GERMAN
Funeral services for Marie Handy German, 88 of St. Augustine, FL and formerly of Overton County, were conducted May 4, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Newsome Harvey officiating. Burial followed in the Overton County Memorial Gardens. She was born Nov. 27, 1914, in Overton County to the late I.E. and Martha Hargis Handy. She passed away May 1, 2003, at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine.
Mrs. German was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Lexington, KY. In addition to her parents, her husband Christopher C. German, daughters Lois Loraine German and Betty June Williams, grandson Charles “Chuck” German, sisters Susie Neal, Alice Weber and Erna Ledbetter and brothers Lee, Vince, Woodrow, Jim, Walter and Donald Handy preceded her in death. She is survived by sons Rev. Billy R. German of St. Augustine, FL and Glenn E. German of Midlothian, VA, a son-in-law Charles Williams, sisters Myrtle Florea of Warren, MI and Ola Hazelett of Chicago, IL, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Leo Ledbetter, Mickey Ledbetter, Aaron Poston, Michael Poston, Chris German and Mark Manley.
HARLEY MCDANIEL
Funeral services for Harley McDaniel, 74 or Rickman, were conducted May 7, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Goff Funeral Home with Rev. Tony Barnett officiating. Burial followed in the Woodcliff Cemetery. He was born Oct. 16, 1928, in Monterey to the late James Arthur and Bonnie Jean Barnwell McDaniel. He passed away May 3, 2003, at Livingston Regional Hospital.
Mr. McDaniel was a Gunners Mate Missile Chief Instructor in the U.S. Navy, worked for General Motors in Detroit, MI, was a VFW Member at Large, a member of the Masonic Lodge # 751 in Monterey, a member of Monterey Order of Eastern Star Chapter, a member of the Moslem Temple in Detroit, MI, a member of the Scottish Rite-Valley of Detroit and a member of the Monterey First Freewill Baptist Church. He is survived by two daughters Gloria Davis of Pensacola, FL and Linda Small of Cantonment, FL and two sons John McDaniel of Fredercksburg, VA and James McDaniel of Muskegon, FL.
