Lora L. Benton
Died: 11/28/2000
ROGERSVILLE -- Lora Love Hickman Benton, age 89, Rogersville, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, at Laughlin Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Add Benton; two infant children; three sisters, Sarah Ellen Jobe, Oma Booker and Fannie ARcher; and two brothers, George and Earnest Hickman.

She is survived by seven children, Ruby Benton, Rogersville, Nell Mowl, Huntsville, AL, Annie Hensley, Greeneville, Rufus Benton, Castlewood, VA, Mitchell Benton, Rockford, IL, Rosa Lee Ward, Greeneville, and Earnest Benton of Bryon, IL; 30 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends 6 - 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, with the funerl service following at 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at the Benton Cemetery.

John L. Hughes
Died: 11/30/2000
carol ROGERSVILLE -- John L. Hughes, Rogersville, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Holston Valley Hospital, Kingsport.

He was a member of Henard’s Chapel Baptist Church. He was a World War II veteran who served in the European Theater. He was retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority, was a mason and a farmer.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mable Hughes; four sons, Charles Hughes, Louis Hughes, Steve Hughes and Mike Hughes, all of Rogersville; two sisters, Grace Bettis, Murphy, NC, and Kathryn Crisp, Marble, NC; two brothers, Harold Hughes, Salisbury, NC, and Paul Hughes, Marble; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Calling hours are 6 - 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, with the funeral service following at 8 p.m. with Rev. Joe Frazier officiating. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at the Kite Cemetery, Persia.

Bessie Mowl
Died: 12/03/2000
ROGERSVILLE -- Bessie Mowl, age 95, Rogersville, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Ridgeview Terrace.

She was of the Methodist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen C. Mowl; a son, G.C. Mowel; and parents, H.B. and Martha Everhart Gibson.

She is survived by a daughter, Paulina Mowl, Rutledge; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a nephew; and a special friend, Scott Lee, Rogersville.

Funeral services will be held 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Colboch-Price Chapel with Rev. Carl Jones officiating. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday prior to the services at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville.

Sandy A. Burton
Died: 12/01/2000
ROGERSVILLE -- Sandy Ann Burton, age 37, Rogersville, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at her residence.

She was a member of Chuza Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Mindy Mesarch; a son, Jamey Burton; parents, Dewey and Phyllis Burton; two brothers, Tony and Ricky Burton; a sister, Amy Burton; grandmother, Ruth Smith, all of Rogersville; and several aunts and uncles.

The family will receive friends 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville. Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m. with Revs. Glen Bradley and Jerry Bradley officiating. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000, at the Dean Cemetery.

Rev. James H. Stogner
Died: 12/05/2000
ROGERSVILLE-- Rev. James Hulett "J.H." Stogner, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000.

He was born Dec. 17, 1914, in Gurley, AL. He was working as a machinist in Alcoa in 1948 when he answered the call to preach and was ordained at First Baptist Church of Pigeon Forge. Over the years he served as pastor of Mt. Zion, Gists Creek, Millican Grove and Richardson Cove Baptist Churches in Sevierville and Center View, Pigeon Valley and Denton Baptist Churches in Cocke County. He served as Director of Missions for the Holston Valley Association from 1055 - 1964 and for East Tennessee Baptist Association from 1964 - 1980. He migrated to Gatlinburg in 1936 where he met his wife. They made their home in Rogersville. He was blessed with a long and healthy life, a wealth of family and friends and an assurance that someday the Lord would come to take him to a heavenly home prepared just for him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James D. "J.D." and Naomi L. Stogner; and two brothers, Shelby and Comer Stogner.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Kate Trentham Stogner; children James and wife Wanda, Rogersville, Dorothy and husband Sidney Lawson, Rogersville, Ronald and wife Darlene, McDonough, GA, Doris Stogner, Sevierville, and Esta and husband Larry Campbell, Knoxville; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mamie Watson, Newport, Ruby Trentham, Maryville, and Lillian Crossley, Schnecksville, PA.

Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Atchley’s Smoky Mountain Chapel, Pigeon Forge, with Revs. Troy Cody and Melvin Carr officiating. Entombment will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, in Smoky Mountain Memory Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering or the Hawkins County EMS.

The family will receive friends 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday at Atchley’s Smoky Mountain Chapel, Pigeon Forge (www.atchleyfuneralhome.com).

A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at First Baptist Church of Rogersville.

Christina Armstrong
Died: 12/05/2000
ROGERSVILLE -- Christina Armstrong, age 88, Rogersville died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at her residence following an extended illness.

She was a 1933 graduate of Mary Baldwin College, Staunton, VA. She was a member of Rogersville Presbyterian Church and was co-owner and clerk of Rod Armstrong & co. She was a most dedicated daughter and sister and was very generous of those in need, and had a compassionate heart for those in prison.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry C. and Anna Armstrong; and a sister, Kathryn Armstrong.

She is survived by loyal and loving caregivers, Nell Kirkpatrick, Betty Rush and Carrie Mae Rogers, all of Rogersville; loyal cousins, Lois Armstrong, Florence Armstrong, Ruth Kirkpatrick and Nell Armstrong, all of Rogersville, Mack Armstrong and Simmons Armstrong, both of Washington, DC, Dr. Joe Armstrong, Bristol, John Armstrong, Tallahassee, FL, Hampton Armstrong, Madison, AL, Mary A. Anthony, Bartlett, Madeline A. Blobe, Carrboro, NC, and Mrs. Rhea (Madeline) Armstrong, Rogersville; as well as a number of other cousins.

Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Rogersville Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Dr. David L. Hale officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, PO Box 669, Knoxville, TN 37901.

Arrangements are under direction of Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville.

Mack Bowlin
Died: 12/02/2000
KYLES FORD -- Mack Bowlin, age 83, Kyles Ford, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at his home.

He was a member of Compromise Baptist Church. He was a World War II veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Laura Bowlin; brothers, Bobby, Oscar, Richard and Luther Bowlin; and sisters, Martha and Maggie Sutton.

He is survived by his wife, Minnie Bowlin, Kyles Ford; a sister, Julia Bowlin, Kyles Ford; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends 2 - 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at the McNeil Funeral Home, Sneedville.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at the Compromise Baptist Church with Revs. J.C. Lawson and Earl Bowlin officiating. Interment will be in the Bowlin Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ray and Billy Begley, Troy Lawson, Rodney Lawson, David Bowlin and Ben Erwin. Singers will be Compromise Singers.

Arrangements were under direction of McNeil Funeral Home, Sneedville.

Thelma O. Carpenter
Died: 12/05/2000
MOORESBURG -- Thelma Orpha Carpenter, age 86, Mooresburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, at her residence following a brief illness.

She was a member of Big Hill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Carpenter; parents, John Leslie and Annis Clonce Hileman; a daughter, Thelma Jean Vaughn; and a brother, Grant Hileman.

She is survived by two daughters, Shirley Wolfe, Bean Station, and Phyllis Hall, Mooresburg; a son, Merle Carpenter Sr., Mooresburg; three sisters, Agnes Orrick and husband Kyle, Leslie Wallace and husband Cannie, Myrtle Watson and husband John, all of Mooresburg; four grandchildren, Robert Wayne Hall, Sharon K. Coffey, both of Mooresburg, Patricia Epperson, Bean Station, and Merle Carpenter Jr., Greeneville; three great-grandchildren, Lesley Coffey, Billy Coffey, both of Mooresburg, and Eric Epperson, Bean Station; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville.

Funeral services will be held 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, in the funeral home chapel with Revs. Willard Wilder and Michael Manis officiating. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at Big Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary R. Eidson
Died: 12/09/2000
ROGERSVILLE -- Mary Rouse Eidson, age 86, Rogersville, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home.

She was a member of Big Creek Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Eidson; parents, John N. and Sarah Rouse; and brothers, Fred, Alfred and Jake Rouse.

She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Joel Eidson and wife Carol, Rogersville, and Jim E. Eidson and wife Barbara, Nashville; five grandchildren, Gerald Eidson and Marty Eidson, both of Rogersville, Stephen, Atlanta, GA, Stacey, Augusta, GA, and Kim, Nashville; five great-grandchildren, Cody, Cameron, Cole, Noah and Annie Eidson, all of Rogersville; two brothers, Tom Rouse, Taylor, SC, and David Rouse, Bristol, VA; three sisters, Bessie Wolfe, Kingsport, Ildegirt Eidson, Rogersville, and Dora Dodson, Davis Junction, IL.

Calling hours will be 6 - 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10. 2000, at Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville, or any time at the home.

Funeral services will be held 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Leon Barrett officiating.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Hawkins County Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
