PHILLIPS, JESSE GORMAN, born Jan, 7 1918 in Sardis, Tennessee and passed away Dec. 24, 1998 in Knoxville at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee. He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church as long as health permitted. He served in the CCC’s prior to World War II, and four years in the Signal Corps attached to the Army Air Force during World War II. He retired from Western Company with 40 years service, at which time Newport became his home. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. W.W. and Mary McMurray Phillips. Survivors are: his beloved wife of 56 years, Georgia Mae Lewis Phillips; son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd W. and Cynthia Phillips all of Newport; brother, James Paris Phillips of Big Sandy, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday Dec. 26, 1998 at the Manes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Riley Huffstetler officiating with burial in the Union Cemetery. The family received friends from 1-2 p.m. Saturday prior to the funeral services. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Chapel fund. CAMPBELL, ANN TERESA, age 59, of Maynardville, formerly of Claiborne County passed away at Ft. Sanders Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Sunday at Coffey Funeral Home Chapel. HAYES, FRANKLIN HENRY, age 69, of Washburn passed away Friday, December 25, 1998 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, John K. and Wilda M. Hayes; three sisters, Edna Hayes, Beulah Hayes, and Stella Williams; and nephew Karleen Williams. Survivors include: three nephews, Wilburn Hayes, Terry Williams and Ricky Williams; two nieces, Maurine Bunch and Patricia Niceley; brother-in-law, James C. Williams; and several great nieces and great nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Hayes will be Monday, December 28, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. in the Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. GIBSON, WILLIAM H. (BILL), age 67, of the Cedar Fork Community, Tazewell, TN. died Friday, December 25, 1998 at the Fort Sanders Hospital in Knoxville, TN. He was a member of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church, employee of Claiborne County Highway Department for several years and lifetime farmer and cattleman. He was preceded in death by his: parents, Garrett and Leota Gibson; infant sister, Betty Gibson. He is survived by: his wife of 49½ years, Wilma ( Beason) Gibson; son and daughter-in-law, William David and Denise Gibson of Tazewell, TN.; daughter, Mitzi Gibson of Morristown; grandchildren, Travis Gibson of Knoxville, TN., Traci (Gibson) and Jamie Posey of Tazewell, TN., Johnny Asher of Morristown, TN., Kori and Matthew Gibson of Tazewell. KNIGHT, FRED E., age 90, of White Pine passed away Sunday morning Dec. 25, 1998 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was a prominent resident and farmer of the White Pine community. Former County Commissioner for a number of years. Former representative for the Farm Mutual Ins. Co. Member of the First United Methodist Church of White Pine. Son of the late Urb and Millie Reynolds Knight and was also preceded in death by brothers Newell and Billy Frank Knight. Survived by wife Mrs. Edith Reese Knight of White Pine; sisters, Mrs. Louise Parsons and Mrs. Bernice Brooks, both of Morristown, Mrs. Edith Wright of Atlanta, GA.; brother, Forrest Knight of White Pine; aunt and her husband Lillian and Art Eaton of White Pine; several nieces and nephews. SEABROOK, REV. DENNIS L., age 83, 421 Fugate St., formerly of Morristown, passed away Thursday, Dec. 24 1998 at Hawkins County Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 30, 1915. Pastor in the Blue Ridge conference, Asheville, N.C. District and Tennessee conference in the Holston district. Preceded in death by father and mother, Curtis and Lelia Seabrook Sr.; wife, Thelma Howell Seabrook; sister, Annie Laura Wilson. Attended AME Zion Church. Rev. Seabrook attended Stevens Lee High School and Hood Theology Seminary in North Carolina. One daughter, Terri Seabrook of Hawkins County; sister, Dora Lee White of Asheville, N.C.; two brothers, Steven (Rose) Seabrook of Washington D.C. and Curtis (Pauline) Seabrook Jr. of Asheville, N.C.; one grand child, Robyn Sherles of Stockton CA.; a devoted cousin, Daisy Payne of Asheville, N.C.; two devoted friends, John Rogers and James Kyle of Morristown and other relatives and friends. HARRIS, JAMES S., age 76, of 107 Tipton Ave., Church Hill, passed away Friday, December 25, 1998 at the Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center following an extended illness. Mr. Harris was a life long resident of Hawkins County, and was a charter member of the Lyons Park Missionary Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by one son Harold Harris, his parents, Tony and Louise Harris; one sister, Betty Harris and six brothers, Tony Harris, Phil Harris, Walter Harris, Burle Harris, Paul Harris and George Harris. Survivors include his wife of 57 years Mrs. Mary Jayne Harris of the home. One daughter, Nina Spears; and son-in-law, Hugh Spears of Church Hill; one grandson, Joel Shane Spears, Church Hill; Four sisters, Margaret Harris. Mary Diamond, Louise Harris all of Rogersville, and Virginia Winkle of Arizona; three brothers, Woodson Harris of Rogersville, Rev. William ( Bill ) Harris and Rev. Roy Harris both of Kingsport. WINKLES, JUANITA LAWSON, age 77, died December 24, 1998 after a long illness. She was a native of Hancock County, Tennessee. She was born the daughter of Lester T. Lawson and Hattie Seal Lawson on April 1, 1921. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Elisha G. Lawson and Kyle Seal And survived by her sister, Lilly Mae Lawson Purkey of Morco Island, Florida. Mrs. Winkles was the wife of the late John D. Winkles of Lake Moore, Morristown, Tennessee. The couple were married on May 12, 1940. Their children are David C. Winkles of Skyesville, Maryland , Ronald C. Winkles of Whitesburg, Tennessee and the late John. A. Winkles of Skyesville, MD. She had seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren and 15 nieces and 22 nephews. Mrs. Winkles was a member of Buffalo Trail Baptist Church of Morristown for over 30 years. She was also a charter and founding member of Liberty Baptist Church of Lisbon, Maryland. Juanita was an active member of the Hamblen county Republican Party for more than 30 years. Her other lifetime memberships included the Patrons of Husbandry, Pamona Grange, Barrett, Maryland and the Order of Eastern Star, Prudence Lodge, Mt. Airy Maryland. Juanita loved to entertain friends and relatives. She was an avid collector of Early American antiques and primitive pieces of Appalachian furniture and pottery. She dearly loved her church, community and neighbors. Funeral services 2 p.m. Monday at Stubblefield Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Sexton officiating. Interment will be in the Masonic section of the Hamblen Memory Gardens.
