COUCH, DORIS ANN, 66, of Bean Station, passed away Sunday, February 28, 1999, at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare Emergency Room, after a brief illness with cancer. She was a member of Lakemore Church of God of Prophecy. Preceded in death by her mother, May Williams; sister, Claudia Wilkins and brother, Jim Anderkin. Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Reuben Couch; children, Joyce and Gary Miller of Bean Station, Bernie and Janet Couch of Bean Station, Phillip and Doris Couch of Bean Station, Chuck and Sandra Couch of Bean Station, Pam and Bob Wedderburn of Bean Station, Trish and Chuck Williford of Bean Station, Charlotte Smith of Bean Station, Sharon and David Potter of Bean Station, Alvy and Janet Couch of Morristown; 25 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Bill Anderkin of Virginia, Shirley Gum of Delaware, Norma Stapleton of Virginia, Jean Day of Virginia, Henretta Dishman of Florida, Peggy Hensley of Virginia and Johnny Gail Freeman of Virginia. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lakemore Church of God of Prophecy with the Rev. Charles Lanter officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the services. FOSTER, ERNEST GLEN, age 82, passed away at his home Monday, March 1, 1999. He is formerly from Grainger County, and retired from American Enka. He will be remembered by friends as “Bugs Bunny” as he served as president of the Cosby Blue Eagles C.B. Club for years. He was preceded in death by Goldie Fuson Foster. MCGINNIS, SAMUEL, age 68, of Rt. 1, Washburn, was born June 14, 1930, passed away on Feb., 28, 1999 at his home. He professed faith in Christ and was a member of Statem Gap Baptist Church. Preceded in death by his father, Jewett McGinnis; mother, Flossie (Cope) McGinnis; brothers, Porter and Robert (Bob) McGinnis. PRATER, TRACY WILSON, prominent local businessman, civic and political leader, passed away early Monday morning, March 1, 1999 at Morristown-Hamblen Hospital. Mr. Prater for 42 years was President and Manager of Prater Oil Company, Gulf and BP dealership, which he owned along with Prater Furniture Company, with his brother, George Herbert Prater. Mr. Prater was married for 55 years to the late Sara Hinton Prater. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Beth Prater Spain, and his parents, Tracy Wilson Prater Sr., and Elizabeth Walters Prater. He was a nephew of the late Senator Herbert Walters. Survivors: wife, Doris Payne Prater; daughter, Dorothy Prater Forry and husband, Robert Forry of Atlanta; brother, George Herbert Prater; sister, Sara Louise Prater Mott of Knoxville; grandchildren, Gregory Spain of Springfield, VA., Sam Forry of Chapel Hill, N.C., Sally Forry of Eugene, Oregon; great-granddaughter, Sara Elizabeth Spain of Springfield, VA.; nephews, Tracy Land Mott of Boulder, CO., Sandy Prater of New Canaan, Connecticut; niece, Lauren Prater Barker of Knoxville. Mr. Prater served as commissioner on the Morristown Housing Authority; president of the Morristown Chamber of Commerce; chairman of the Morristown School Board; and Chairman of the Hamblen County Democratic Party; on the board of Hamilton Bank, now Third National Bank; and was a former deacon at First Presbyterian Church, where he was a member for 43 years. He was a partner in Prater Brothers General Construction Company and a principal in Star Construction Company of Knoxville. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and manager of the 1938 football team. He served as a Major in World War II on the staff of General Noce in North Africa, England and Italy. He also served on the Athletic Board of the University of Tennessee and chairman of the State of Tennessee Industrial Development Board. Memorial contributions may be made to the Beth Prater Spain Memorial Fund at the Boy and Girls Club of Morristown, the Sara Prater Endowment or Beth Spain Fund at ALPS, or First Presbyterian Church Music Fund. RUSSELL, HORACE A., formerly of Fonde, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, February 27, 1999 at his home in Farmingron, Michigan. He was a retired Coal Miner. He is survived by son, Charles E. Russell, and daughter, Juanita Russell Henderson, of Morristown, Tennessee.; three grandchildren, Dillard Henderson Jr., Linda Henderson Smith and Charles E. Russell Jr., all of Morristown, Also six great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He accepted Christ as a young man and was of the Baptist faith. TESTER, DAVID MCCOY, 99, formerly of Hwy. 321, Hampton, brother of William Howard “Bill” Tester of Morristown, died Tuesday, February 23, 1999, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home, following an extended illness. A native of Watauga County, N.C., he was the son of the late Eli Finley and Cameline Presnell Tester. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. Mr. Tester was a member of Harbor Light Baptist Church and a retired electrician. He also was an Army veteran, serving in World War II, where he was a ship builder, an airplane mechanic and a cook in the CC Camps. He entered the service August 5, 1942 and arrived in the SWPA in May 1944, and served in New Guinea and the Netherlands and East Indies before coming to the Philippines during the first week of the invasion. He is authorized to wear the Asiatic Pacific and Philippine Liberation Ribbons and Battle Stars for the New Guinea and Philippine campaign. He was the oldest known veteran of Carter County. Other survivors beside brother “Bill” Tester of Morristown include three brothers, Nelson Tester, Greeneville, TN., Louis Tester, Grafton, OH.; three sisters,, Rilda Campbell, Newport, TN., Ida Finery, Butler, TN., and Ruth Jones, Johnson City, TN.; twenty-nine nephews; eighteen nieces; three special nieces, Shelby Davenport, Hampton, TN., Peggy Davenport, Butler, TN., and Rosemary Tester, Butler, TN.; special friends, Buddy Elizabeth and Johnny Street and Oleta Street, all of Hampton. Funeral services were 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 1999 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Clarence Stanfield, Rev. Bobby Stout and Rev. Buddy Street officiating.
