LONG, Ann Manning
age 94, died suddenly Friday morning, Oct. 1, 2004, at her home. She was a Knoxville native and grew up in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was a member of the first graduating class of St. Mary’s School of Nursing and had retired as the public health nurse for the City of Knoxville. She had also nursed at Eastern State (Lakeshore) Hospital. Long was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. She was a charter member of the Knox County Democratic Women’s Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, John (Jack) and Mary Netherland Vance Manning; husband, John F. (Bud) Long; brothers, John and Frank Manning; and sister, Catherine M. Smith. She is survived by her brothers, J.T. Manning and wife, Mary, and Gus Manning, all of Knoxville; sister, Eleanor M. Martin of Diana, Texas; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Manning of Oak Ridge; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral mass was celebrated Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. James A. Haley, CSP officiating. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers. The family received friends Sunday followed by a rosary service at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
HERDMAN, Stephen Whitney (Steve)
age 60, of the Hardin Valley community, formerly of the New England area, passed away early Wednesday morning, Sept. 29, 2004 at Parkwest Medical Center. Herdman attended Marietta Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was an employee of Kennametal Carbide Corporation in Karns. Herdman was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion. Herdman enjoyed his farm and his animals. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Elizabeth Smith Herdman; sister, Deborah. Survivors include: wife of 38 years, Patricia Jean (P.J.) Herdman; sisters, Catherine Headley and husband Michael of New Jersey, Marsha Graham and husband Robert of Massachusetts; brother, Richard Herdman of Massachusetts; uncle, Allan Herdman of Florida; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; devoted pets, Shadow, Elvis, Lady Vol, C. C., Towanda, Cloe, Momma Kitty and Salem. A celebration of life was held Sunday at the Marietta Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Randall Mayfield and the Rev. Don Hubbard officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery with full military honors conferred by the East Tennessee Veteran Honor Guard. GRAY, Dorothy Dale
beloved wife of the late Col. R. McDonald (Mac) Gray and devoted mother of R. McDonald (Don) Gray III, died Friday morning Oct. 8, 2004, in Knoxville. She graduated from Hume Fogg High School, attended Vanderbilt University from 1931 to 1934 and married Robert McDonald Gray Jr. in 1934. As the wife of a career army officer, she was stationed with her family at Charlotte, N.C.; Washington, D.C.; San Francisco, Calif.; Trieste, Italy; Frankfurt, Germany; Ft. Bragg, N.C.; Ft. Stewart, Ga.; and MacDill AFB, Fla., before establishing a Knoxville residence in 1963. She had resided at Shannondale since 2003. Gray was a Presbyterian, member of Frist Presbyterian Church of Knoxville, former member of the Rosa Scott Class, member of Talahi Garden Club, UT Faculty Women, Knoxville Women’s Chorus and several bridge clubs. She was a generous benefactor of the Knoxville Symphony and Knoxville Opera. She was an avid UT sports fan and loved music, travel, bridge, singing and gardening. An active sportswoman, she played tennis, golf and bowled. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Elizabeth Spearman and Ruth D. Carmichael. She is survived by her son, Don of Cincinnati, Ohio; sisters, Lilliam Trabue of Nashville, Nancy Dale Palm of Houston, Texas and Katherine Potts of Shelbyville; sister-in-law, Jenny Lou Nimnicht of Waynesville, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. G. Carswell Hughs officiating. The family received friends following the service at the church. DUFF, Drucella O.
age 87, of Knoxville, died Wednesday Sept. 29, 2004, at Baptist Health Care Center of Lenoir City. She was the widow of Ray M. Duff. Duff was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church and had retired from the W.W. Williams Co. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Barry Scarborough of Knoxville; grandsons, Derek and Andrew Scarborough; sisters, Evelyn Shealy of South Carolina and Frances Lazzaro of Knoxville; brother, Jack Johnson of Nashville; and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends met at the main entrance to Lynnhurst Cemetery Saturday for a graveside service with the Rev. Earl Wilson officiating. BRIMM, Ruth Montgomery,
age 91, of Knoxville, died Sept. 24, 2004, at her home at Shannondale Assisted Living. She was a member of Central Baptist Church, Bearden and a retired teacher from the Knox County Schools system. She is preceded in death by; husband, J.W. Brimm; father, William Austin Montgomery; mother, Annas Watt Montgomery; sister, Elizabeth Montgomery Patterson; and brother, James Montgomery. Brimm is survived by; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Linda Brimm of Riddleton; daughter and son-in-law, Lucy Brimm and Arnold Skelton of Asheville, N.C.; grandchildren, Andy Brimm and wife, Angie, of Riddleton, Bonnie Grandstaff and husband, Don, of Brush Creek, Marshall Skelton and wife, Vivian, of Wilmington, N.C., Laura Shirazi and husband, Matt, of Charlotte, N.C., Lee Skelton and wife, Mary, of Asheville, N.C., and Dr. Joe Skelton and wife, Kristen, of Milwaukee, Wis., along with nine great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. John L. and Mary Montgomery of Knoxville. DAVIS, Dent C. Jr.
age 86, of Knoxville, died at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004. Davis was retired as a chemical engineer with the U.S. Department of Energy, Oak Ridge. He is survived by; wife, Josephine (Jo) Davis; sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Dr. Dent C. Davis and Mary Davis of Decatur, Ga., Kent C. and Becky Davis of Alpharetta, Ga.; grandchildren, Karyl, Denny, Micah, Seth and Amber Davis, Rachel Bargo, Kim and David Heuberger and Katrina Turgeon. A Memorial service was held Monday at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church with Dr. William R. Barron officiating. WOTRING, Maxon Lee Lt. Col. U.S. Air Force (Ret.)
age 82 of Farragut, formerly of Fresno, Calif., and Port Ludlow, Wash., went to be with the Lord Monday afternoon, Nov. 22, 2004. Wotring was a member of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. He retired from the U.S. Air Force on June 30, 1962, with 20 years of service as a bomber pilot in the Strategic Air Command. Wotring was an aircraft commander on a B-47 six jet bomber. After his military career, he was a stockbroker with E.F. Hutton in Fresno for 12 years. He was an avid reader, writer, golfer, tennis player, coin collector and hiker. Wotring was very active teaching Bible study fellowship and Sunday School classes at various churches he attended over the years. He also served as deacon and head usher at Evangelical Free Church and First Baptist Church, both in Fresno. Wotring was loved for his humor, intelligence and outgoing nature, making friends wherever he lived. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Alicia Smith Wotring; and children and spouses, Sharon and Dick Hammat of Knoxville, Wesley and Katherine Wotring of Potlatch, Idaho, Deborah Smith-Wotring and Geoffrey Klopper of Carmel, Calif., Lisa Ann and Skip Landon of Grass Valley, Calif., Cindy and Roger Simpson of Fresno; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; sister and brother-in-law, Hope and Wayne Jordan of Osprey, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Tuesday at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Vern Holstad officiating.
