BACKHURST, Henry George
age 76, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2005. He was a member of Knoxville First Seventh Day Adventist Church. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired from Yale Lock Company where he worked as chief engineer. Backhurst is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Dorothy Hicks Backhurst; brothers, Eddie, Bill and Butch Backhurst; wife, Latrice Backhurst; daughter, Donna Scott; son, Henry Backhurst. He is survived by wife, Gen Backhurst; sons, Donnie, Harry and Glen Backhurst; daughters, Deborah Dukes, Lucy Backhurst and Eileen Wilson; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral service 7 p.m. Thursday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with Pastor Rick Greeve officiating. Family and friends met Friday for an 11:30 a.m. interment service at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery with full military honors presented by the Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard. The family received friends between 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
PATTERSON, Frances K. MD
age 67, of Knoxville, died Wednesday, Jan. 26 after a courageous 11-year battle with cancer. Dr. Patterson was born in 1937 to Max Klinman and Mildred Labiner in Philadelphia, Pa., and grew up in Upper Darby, Pa. In 1962 she graduated magna cum laude from the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (later known as Temple University). For the past 36 years, Patterson served as a pathologist at the University of Tennessee Memorial Hospital and on the faculty of the residency program. She was instrumental in the founding of the Nuclear Medicine Department, the Nuclear Medicine Training Program and in the accreditation of the Pathology Residency Program. Among her awards is the Frank R. Blood Award for Research in Toxicology. Patterson was also an active competitive bridge player and attained the ranking of Silver Life Master. She enjoyed listening to classical music, reading mystery novels and gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Mildred Klinman, and her first husband (divorced), Malcolm R. Patterson of Knoxville. She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Paul W. Wigler of Knoxville; her brother Mickey Klinman of Marlton, N.J.; her daughters Anne Sprague of Raleigh, N.C. and Carole Patterson of Eugene, Ore. A memorial service in her honor will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at the University of Tennessee Memorial Hospital’s Wood Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Frances K. Patterson Fund, UT Medical Center, care of Development Office, 1924 Alcoa Highway, Knoxville TN 37920. McGEE, Anna Z. (Ann)
age 89, of Knoxville, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at University of Tennessee Medical Center. She was a resident of Brakebill Nursing Home for over nine years and a member of Mount. Arrarat Church of Christ in Cannon County. She attended West End Church of Christ and was the owner/operator of Ann’s Beauty Salon in the Rocky Hill community for more than 30 years. During World War II, she worked at ORNL in Oak Ridge and contributed to the Manhattan project. She is preceded in death by her parents, Uless E. and Hassie P. McGee; sister, Mildred Estes; brother, F. Dee McGee. She is survived by sister, Marjorie Williams of Robersonville, N.C.; brother, James G. and wife, Betty Hillard McGee; special nieces, Shirley Anderson and Betty J. Estes of Knoxville; nieces, Brenda Williams, Deloria Pickell and husband, David, Lois Jenkins and husband, Mike; nephews, Greg McGee and wife, Allyson, Ralph Estes, Jimmy Estes and wife, Laurie, Buddy McGee and wife, Carolyn, Jerry Williams and wife, Trisha, and Glenn McGee and wife, Darlene. The family would like to thank the staff of Brakebill Nursing Home and UT Medical Center for their kindness and care for Ann during her illness. Family and friends met at Highland Memorial Cemetery for a graveside service with Brother Charles Brown officiating. QUARLES, Mildred C.
age 77, of West Knoxville, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Parkwest Medical Center. She attended Ball Camp Baptist Church. Quarles was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd L. Quarles, and brother, Art Compton. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd L Jr. and Sharron Quarles of Knoxville; daughter, Susan C. Quarles of Elizabethton; grandchildren, Ashley and John Quarles and Devin LeFevere; brothers, Elmer Compton of Atlanta, and Bo Bowman; sister, Lou Thorne of Hickory, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Family and friends met at the main entrance to Highland Memorial Cemetery at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, for a graveside service with the Reverend T.M. Cody officiating. Pallbearers were Devin LeFevere, John Quarles, James and Kenneth Ford, and Kyle Turner. The family received friends 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
BISHOP, Melinda Shaia
age 41, of Farragut, formerly of Nashville, passed away suddenly Saturday morning, Feb. 26, 2005, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Melinda was an employee of UT/Knox County Agricultural Extension Service with her office in the City County Building. Survivors include: husband, Gary Bishop; parents, Louis and Laura Shaia of Nashville; siblings, Greg Shaia of Paducah, Ky., John Shaia of Lexington, Ky., Elizabeth Shaia Dobbs of Nashville; niece, Stephanie Shaia of Paducah. The family received friends Tuesday at the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Thursday, March 3, at the Mt. BUSH, Eugenia Coben
age 83, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005. She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee where she served as president of Zeta Tau Alpha fraternity, Zeta Chapter. As a home economics graduate, she practiced her skills in her home and community throughout her life. She was a member of the Bearden United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. She also served as a member of the advisory board of Carson-Newman College, Family and Consumer Sciences, Sevierville Safe Space Shelter advisory board. She was an educator at the Chestnut Hill Elementary School and a proponent of spirituality, education and music for the youth of her communities. She served as choir director, organist, pianist and choir member in several church homes throughout her life. Eugenia Bush was preceded in death by: husband of 62 years, Jack Tucker Bush; parents, John M. Coben and Maude Poole Coben; sister, Eva Elaine Lunn; and brother, John A. Coben. She is survived by: son, Jack C. Bush and wife, Dr. Catherine Norris-Bush, of Newport; daughter, Charlotte B. Rigsby and husband, Terry A. of Knoxville, went to be with the Lord Monday evening, Feb. 21, 2005. He will be missed by his wife, Vicki Johnson; daughter and son-in-law, Melody and Jason Hobbs; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Meredith Johnson; grandchildren, Tyler, Turner, Addie and Kinsey, all of Knoxville; mother, Janet Johnson; sister, Carol Abrahamson, both of Minneapolis, Minn. DRUMRIGHT, Margaret “Peggy” Fenn Rogers
departed this life Wednesday, April 23, 2008, in Knoxville. She was born April 12, 1948, to her late parents Elizabeth F. and Benjamin D. Rogers of Norfolk, Mass. She also was preceded in death by her loving son, William “Billy” F. England III. Peggy leaves behind many who will miss her smile and laughter; A devoted and caring husband, William “Bill” T. Drumright Jr. of Knoxville; daughter, Rebecca “Becky” A. England of Lynchburg, Va.; step-son, Kenneth “Kenny” W. Drumright and wife, Karen; and step-son, William “Bill” T. Drumright III and wife, Amy of Colonial Heights, Va.; sister, Joanna Scott and son of Sharon, Mass.; brother, Ben Rogers and wife, Jean; and brother, Kimball Rogers and wife, Barbara and family of Norfolk; mother-in-law, Willie “Billie” Drumright of Knoxville; sister-in-law, Milla Bilbrey and her husband, Mickey of Park City, Utah; and grandchildren, Brittany, Quinton, Zachary and Blakely Drumright of Colonial Heights. In addition, she is survived by her faithful canine companion for more than 18 years, Brandy. Peggy grew up in Norfolk and moved to Lynchburg to attend Lynchburg College where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree. She later attended the University of Virginia where she obtained her master’s degree. Her career with the Lynchburg City School system afforded her the opportunity to teach at R.S. Payne Elementary School and to run the Parent Center, which provided help to parents whose children needed additional assistance with early learning. She retired from the school system in 2001. She was an active member of the Girls Scouts and a devoted fan of Tennessee Volunteers football and Lady Vols basketball. She also was a proud member of the Boston Red Sox baseball nation. The family received friends Monday, April 28, 2008, with a memorial service following at Diuguid Funeral Home in Lynchburg. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donation be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association in her name as an honor to her son William England III.
