LYON, William Southern Jr. (Bill)
age 83 ,of Farragut ,died Friday morning, Feb. 25, 2005. Bill was born in Pulaski, Va. He graduated from the University of Virginia and joined the Manhattan Project in 1944. After a year at Hanford, Wash., he returned to Oak Ridge and from 1947 to 1985 he was a radiochemist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He published a number of papers, gathered several awards, authored, co-authored and edited a number of technical books, was on the board of a number of technical journals and wrote a column for one of them. An avid reader, a poor golfer and an average tennis player, he enjoyed both sports and intellectual activities. Bill was preceded in death by: wife, Carey Greer Lyon. Survivors include: son, William S. Lyon III and wife, Robin, of Farragut; daughter, Victoria Lyon Tolley and husband, Dr. Vincent Tolley, of Sevierville; grandchildren, Amanda and Adam Lyon, Josh, Laurie and Katie Tolley; sister, Jane Lyon Alderman and husband Ernest Alderman, of Sarasota, Fla.; three very caring sisters-in-law, Mary Alice Greer Nichols of Oakfield, Carolyn Greer Bond of Denmark, and Anne Greer Carter of Chattanooga. Service was held Sunday at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Matthew Dutton-Gillett officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant Forest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Friends of the Knox County Library or any organization of choice. Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel ,11915 Kingston Pike, is serving the Lyon family.

GWYN, Arlene White
died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at Brakebill Nursing Home. She was born Nov. 6, 1909, to Albert Sydney White and Mary Catherine Ramsey White in Sycamore, Va. “Granny Gwyn” was a farm girl at heart and exhibited respect and extraordinary kindness to every living thing. She was a member of Washington Pike Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by: husband of 42 years, Donnie Lee Gwyn; eldest son, Donnie Lee Gwyn, Jr.; daughters-in-law, JoAnn Atkins Gwyn and Frances Brite Gwyn; and infant grandson, Alexander Armstead Shafer III. Survivors include: son, Carroll Sidney Gwyn and wife, Rose, of Knoxville; daughters, Sue Gwyn Clabby and husband, Vernon, of Lady Lake, Fla., Mary Gwyn Shafer and husband, Bo, of Knoxville; grandchildren, Mark Gwyn of Kingston, Angela Gwyn McAllister and husband, Bill, of Kingston, Missy Gwyn Taylor and husband, Scot, of Gainesville, Ga., Leslie Gwyn Hunse and husband, Ryan, Heidi Shafer Shuler and husband, Chris, Andy Shafer and wife,Teresa, all of Knoxville; great- grandchildren, Emily, Joshua, Jacob, Joseph Taylor, Will and Caroline Hunse, and Christopher and Blakely Shuler. Granny’s sweet and gentle spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. The family received friends Monday followed by the funeral service at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel with the Rev. Scot Taylor officiating. Family and friends met at the main entrance to Greenwood Cemetery Tuesday for interment service with Dr. Arnold Lovell officiating. Memorials may be made to Washington Pike Baptist Church, 1700 Washington Pike, Knoxville, TN 37917 or Helen Ross McNabb Therapeutic Nursery, 201 W. Springdale Ave., Knoxville, TN 37917. HARRISON, Ann Hunter
age 81, of Knoxville, formerly of Memphis, passed away at home on Feb. 12, 2005. Born August 10, 1923, she grew up in Miami, Fla., where she attended Miami High School and the University of Miami, from which she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business. A lifelong Presbyterian, she was a member of Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church of Knoxville. She was preceded in death by: mother, Minnie Hunter Wright and her husband, C. Bennett Harrison Sr. She is survived by: sons, C. Bennett Harrison Jr. of Nashville, and James H. Harrison and his wife, Janet, of Knoxville; six grandchildren, Julia, Katherine and Elizabeth Harrison of Nashville, Morgan, Hunter and Bennett Harrison of Knoxville. She is also survived by her close friend, Toni McFerrin, who was like a daughter. The family received friends on Wednesday, Feb.16, at the Bodkin Funeral Home, 2000 First Street, Milan. Services followed in the funeral home chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church, 3700 Keowee Ave., Knoxville, TN 37919. Local arrangements by Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.

KIRBY, William Hall Jr.
age 80, of Powell, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005. He was a member of Second United Methodist Church for many years. Kirby was a wholesale florist in Knoxville for 40 years and an avid University of Tennessee sports fan. He was preceded in death by: parents, William H. Collins Sr. and Kathleen Collins Kirby; sister, Helen Rice Kirby. He is survived by: wife, Salina Key Kirby; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Janis Kirby of Knoxville; grandsons, Scott Kirby and wife, Amy, of Baton Rouge, La., Brent Kirby and wife, Stephanie, of Nashville; great-grandchildren, Denton, Parker, and Sydney; special brother-in-law, Clyde Key of Knoxville; several nieces, nephews and a host of special friends. Funeral service wereThursday at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel with the Rev. Gerald McFarland officiating. Family and friends met at the main entrance to Highland Memorial Cemetery Friday for entombment service. Pallbearers: Bob Key, James Satterfield, Don Garrett, Ronnie Crabtree, Ronnie McClemore, and R.C. Collinsworth. Memorials may be made to Second United Methodist Church Childrens Fund, 1524 Western Ave., Knoxville, TN 37921. The family received friends at Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.

BATTEN, Dorothy C. Dowling
age 84, passed away Wednesday, March 9, in Valdosta, Ga.. Born in Knoxville to the late Tom and Minnie Dowling, she had lived in Knoxville before moving to Valdosta five years ago. She was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Preceded in death by: husband, John Batten, and several brothers and sisters. Survived by: two sons and daughters-in-law: Joe and Terry Batten of Dover, Del., and Bob and Lawanna Batten of Valdosta; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral mass was held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Ciconne, CSP, officiating. Interment followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Latin American Mission, Forrest Park Church of Christ, 1601 E. Park Ave., Valdosta, GA, 31602. The family received friends followed by a prayer service at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.

BRANAM, Marguerite Louise Oakes
age 92, of Plantation, Fla., formerly of Knoxville, died March 6 at Florida Medical Center. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hollywood, Fla. Preceded in death by: husband, Charles T. Branam; parents, William and Martha Warwick Oakes; grandson, Herbert Michael Ford; twelve siblings. Survived by: daughter, Elizabeth Branam; great-grandson, Joseph Michael Ford; great-great-granddaughter, Amber Ford; nieces, Anna Morrell, Sylvia Cardwell and Teresa Dann; nephews, Arthur Eugene Patterson and Sam Oakes. Family and friends met at Woodlawn Cemetery for a graveside service with the Rev. Sam Oakes officiating. The family received friends at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.

PRUGH, Mary Wood
age 94, died Saturday, March 5. She was a lifelong resident of Knoxville and a charter member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension. She was preceded in death by parents, who contributed significantly to Knoxville’s early history. Her father, Harry K. Wood was former finance director of Knoxville and her mother, the former Mary Louise Brownlow, was a member of the large Swiss community which settled in East Tennessee. She was a graduate of Knoxville High School and the University of Tennessee where she was a member of Chi Omega fraternity. She belonged to the Junior League where she originated and served as first editor of the newsletter, “Tenn Minutes.” She also taught school at Sequoyah Elementary. Mary was married 61 years to John Connor Prugh, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were brothers, Arthur B. Ward and Harry K. Jr. She served 12 years as assistant librarian at Sequoyah Library. Mary was an accomplished artist whose pastel portraits and watercolors hang in many area collections. Survivors include: daughters, Constance P. Carson, Mary P. Jeffrey (Drew) and son, John W. (Jack) Prugh (Gail); grandchildren, Martin Ross Baker III, Mary B.Sonju, John T. Baker, Mary P. Beaule, Margaret P. (Maggie) McCallie, John W. Prugh, Mary Green (Meg) Jeffrey and William A. Jeffrey; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Constance W. Wimmer and Adele W. Ostrowski. Memorial service was Wednesday at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension with the Rev. Mervyn Dunn officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Friends of the Knox County Public Library, 500 W. Church Ave., Knoxville, TN 37902, or to the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 800 Northshore Drive, Knoxville, TN 37919. The family received friends following the memorial service in the fellowship hall. Arrangements by Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
