TURNER, Vera (Bessie) Lee Norton
age 96, formerly of Gadsden, Ala., and Knoxville, passed away Saturday morning, March 12, at the Springs Nursing Home in Daingerfield, Texas. Bessie was a homemaker and a lifelong devoted member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and was a past-president of the Women’s Missionary Auxiliary. Preceded in death by: husband of 67 Years, L. E. (Gene) Turner Sr., who was a former employee of Alabama Power Company in Gadsden; parents, Ernest Lockhart and Smyra Elizabeth Norton. Survived by: daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Leldon Williams of Liberty, Texas, Marlene and Edwin Wetzel of Daingerfield, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Leonard E. and Mary Jo Turner of Knoxville; grandchildren, Rusty and David Williams, Teresa Wetzel Payne, Susan Wetzel and Pauline Sanchez, Gina Turner Wood and Tabitah Turner Roberts; great-grandchildren, Andy and Russell Payne, Laura and Julia Williams, Taylor Sparkman, Anna Wood and Guy Roberts; sisters, Thelma Walls of Dallas, Texas, and Bernice O’Neal of Arlington, Texas; several nieces and nephews. The family received friends Tuesday at Collier Butler Funeral Home in Gadsden. Family and friends gathered Wednesday at Hokes Bluff Cemetery for graveside services and interment. HASLETT, Irene
age 86, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 6. She was a member of Fairmont First Baptist Church, Concord. She was born on Feb. 21, 1919, in Cornelia, Ga., but had been a Knoxville resident since 1948. She attended Piedmont College and later entered nurses training at Georgia Baptist Hospital. Her education was interrupted by her husband’s military service and the birth of her first child. Her husband, Leonard Frank Haslett, preceded her in death. Survivors: daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and William Stokely of Knoxville, Jan and David Glass of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, William Stokely, Clayton Stokely and wife Jamie, Andrew Glass, and Philip Glass; great-grandchildren, William Stokely V, Hunter Stokely, Savannah Stokely, Stratton Stokely, Alexander Byerly, Luke Byerly, Greyson Stokely and Chase Stokely; and many nieces and nephews. The family expresses appreciation to the staff at NHC Farragut and to her beloved friends at NHC assisted living. The family also thanks Dr. Patrick Downey and his wife, Leslie, for their loving care. Funeral service was Wednesday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with Dr. Doug Sager and the Rev. HOYLE, Zoë Ann Dooley
age 75, passed away March 6 at her Knoxville home. She was born July 18, 1929, in St. Louis, Mo., and moved to Knoxville in the 1930s with her parents, Glenn and Emily Dooley. She attended Knoxville High School and the University of Tennessee and married Sam T. Hoyle in 1949. She was an antique dealer for many years at the Kingston Pike Antique Mall. She was a longtime friend of Bill Wilson. Preceded by: husband, Sam Thomas Hoyle; parents, Glenn and Emily Dooley, and sister, Jean Medlock. Survived by: children, Zoë Ann Hoyle, Susan Emily Hoyle, Linda Grace Henry and Samuel Thomas Hoyle,Jr.; son-in-law, Gerald Wayne Henry; grandchildren, James Daniel Henry and wife Alicia Flynn Henry, Sarah Zoe Henry and Joshua Thomas Henry; one great-grandchild, Audrey Zoe Henry. A memorial service was held Thursday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel. The family received friends Thursday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
OTIS, Irene Wilson
of Knoxville, passed away Sunday, March 6, at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice Center. She was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral parish. Preceded in death by: husband, Charles W. Otis; parents, Anthony (Tony) and Lila J. Wilson; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Louis Schaad. Survived by: beloved daughter, Ann Otis; brother and sister-in-law, George and Betty Wilson; aunt, Nell J. King; six nephews and nieces, including special niece, Jan Millsaps; thirteen great-nephews and great-nieces, all of whom will miss her dearly; as well as her many old friends from Knoxville Catholic High School. Funeral Mass was Thursday at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Entombment followed at Highland Memorial Cemetery. The family received friends Wednesday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
EVANS, William Ralph Sr.
age 72, of Knoxville, died Saturday, March 5, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was a member of Marble City Baptist Church. Evans enlisted into the Tennessee National Guard in 1948 with the 191st Field Artillery Battery B, which was activated from 1949 to 1952 at Ft. Devans, Mass. Preceded in death by: wife, Betty Jo Norman Evans, in 1992. Survived by: son and daughter-in-law, William R. (Ark) Jr. and Jennifer Evans; grandchildren, Hannah Marie and Tanner William Evans; sisters and brother-in-law, Virginia “Red” Nelson and Doris and Joe McDonald; several nieces and nephews. Family and friends met Tuesday at the main entrance to Highland Memorial Cemetery for a graveside service with the Rev. Jess Jackson officiating. Family received friends Monday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
FLYNN, Frank L. Jr.
age 66, of West Knoxville, passed away Wednesday, March 9, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. A graduate of the University of Tennessee and University of Tennessee College of Law in 1961, Flynn was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Gamma Sigma, and Order of the Coif member. He practiced law in Knoxville for 44 years, first practicing with his father, Frank L. Flynn Sr. In 1981 he joined the law firm of Pryor, Flynn, Priest and Harber. Flynn served on the Board of Editors of Tennessee Law Review and as lecturer on law at the University of Tennessee. He was a member of Knoxville Bar Association (Board of Governors 1982-84), Tennessee Bar Association, Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association and a fellow of the Knoxville Bar Foundation. Preceded in death by: father, Frank L. Flynn Sr., and mother, Ruth Watson Flynn. Survived by: wife, Judy Morrell Flynn; son and daughter-in-law, Tracy and Kaye Flynn; daughter, Cindy Flynn; grandson, Jacob Scott Flynn; granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth Flynn; sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Gene Hubbard; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Vickie and Fayne Phillips; brother-in-law, Scott Morrell; several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his devoted secretary of 40 years, Lorene Furrow. The family would like to extend their thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of Parkwest Medical Center, Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center and Shannondale Health Care Center for all of their caring efforts. Thanks for all of the cards, visits and prayers. age 64, of Knoxville, formerly of Beckley, W.V., passed away Wednesday afternoon, March 9, at Parkwest Medical Center. She was an employee of 7-Eleven and McDonald’s. HARGROVE, Patricia Parker Hayes
age 70, of Knoxville, native of Tenafly, N. J., daughter of the late William and Ruth Parker Hayes, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005. She was of the Protestant faith and had done volunteer work for the Knoxville Museum of Art, the Helen Ross McNabb Center and the Fort Sanders Medical Auxiliary. She had participated in the Wellness Community, and was a past member of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine Medical Auxiliary. Patricia graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Miami University of Ohio. She attended the Yale Divinity School and the School of Social Work at the University of Tennessee. She is survived by her beloved children, Elisabeth Hayes Hargrove of Durham, N.C, Susan St. John Hargrove and Christopher Hill Hargrove, both of Knoxville; loving granddaughter, Dana Louise Palmer; cherished sisters, Elizabeth Hayes Morgenroth of Purchase, N.Y., Margery Hayes Wessell of Rockport, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was Saturday at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension with the Rev. Ladson F. Mills III officiating.
