COHEN, Gertrude Glazer
age 89, of Knoxville, died Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005. A first generation American and Knoxvillian, Gert grew up on Deery Street. A child of immigrants who fled the religious persecution of Western Russia and Eastern Europe, she graduated from Knoxville High School and worked in a trucking company office where she sometimes parked large trucks. In the mid-1950s, Gert and her late husband, Israel (Buddy) Cohen, acquired the Holiday Motel on Clinton Highway, which she operated successfully until they sold the business. She raised two sons on North Hills Boulevard while volunteering at Belle Morris Elementary and Christenberry Junior High schools, Heska Amuna Synagogue, Arnstein Jewish Community Center and in various community organization fund raising drives. Her pastimes included bowling and golf, but her passion was duplicate contract bridge at which she became an early Life Master. A fierce competitor, she and her favorite partner, Shirley Leeds, were frequent winners. Gert also partnered with a number of friends in their successful quests to become Life Masters. As “Mom and Grandma” she was very generous with her family as well as a donor in both the Jewish community and the community at large. Her death leaves a big gap in her family and community. She was strong willed and often insistent on her way, but when a reasoned contrary decision was reached, she usually supported it vigorously. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Aaron and Ida Bressoff Glazer; siblings, Jennie, Morris, Louis and Jerome Glazer and Bessie Glazer Hite; great-grandchildren, Nathan Israel Abrams-Cohen and Max Cohen Chapman. Moore and Stacy Bridges; great-grandchildren, Noah Albert Cohen-Vogel, Benjamin August Cohen-Vogel and Samantha Miriam Abrams-Cohen; brother, Guilford Glazer; sister and close friend, Bella G. Leeds; and many dear cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Family and friends met Friday at New Jewish Cemetery for a graveside service with Rabbi Louis Zivic officiating. Pallbearers: Jeffrey Abrams-Cohen, Gary M. Leeds, Daniel R. Cohen-Vogel, Jeffrey H. Cohen, Alan Glazer, M.D. and Ricky W. Bridges. Honorary pallbearers: Scott Glazer, Arthur J.
