SELLS, Warner McElroy (Mac)
age 64, died Thursday, May 4, 2006, at his Farragut home after a long battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma. He was born in Johnson City, the son of the late William S. and Louise DuBose Sells. Mac was the director of Global Mission for the Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. He joined the church staff after nearly 20 years in trust banking. In Knoxville, he was employed by the Valley Fidelity Bank and Trust Company and the Park National Bank, where he was a vice president and trust officer. In his work with global mission, he traveled extensively to visit missionaries and projects supported by Cedar Springs. At the last count, he visited 31 countries on behalf of the church, both developed and undeveloped countries. Mac is survived by his wife, Beth Silvers Sells; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and the Rev. Dennis Griffith of Monroeville, Pa., Suzanne and David Clothier of Knoxville; five grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew and Rebekah Griffith, Hannah and Davis Clothier; brothers, William S. Sells Jr. of Ft. Pierce, Fla., George D. Sells of Johnson City, and Frank R. Sells of Bluffton, S.C.; sister, Carolyn S. Berrong of Monroe, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. Following a private interment service at Cedar Springs Cemetery, there was a memorial service at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church with Senior Pastor John M. Wood and the Rev. Dennis Griffith (Sells’ son-in-law) officiating. The family received friends following the service at the church. REESE, Nancy Ann Larsen
age 72, of Knoxville, died Sunday, May 7, 2006. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral. Mrs. Reese was a talented craftswoman, gardener and she enjoyed collecting antiques. She was a founding board member of AGAPE, Inc. As wife of the late Jack E. Reese, former chancellor of the University of Tennessee, Mrs. Reese assisted her husband as they attended and hosted university events for many years. She is survived by her son, Brad Reese and wife, Cindy, of Corryton; daughter, Kristin Reese Williams and husband, John, of Calvert City, Ky.; grandchildren, Scott Goodlin, Ashley Williams, and John Williams IV; an aunt, Alice Larsen of Westerly, R.I. Following a private interment, there was a memorial service Wednesday at St. John’s Cathedral with the Very Rev. John C. Ross, the Rev. Canon Mary Lee Bergeron and the Rev. Thomas J. MacKAY, Charles Thom Jr.
age 86, of Farragut, formerly of Warren, N.J., passed away Friday afternoon, May 5, 2006, at Baptist Hospital West in Farragut. Charlie was a graduate of the U.S. Maritime Academy and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He retired in 1985 as maintenance superintendent from Premium Plastics in East Brunswick, N.J. He moved to Tennnessee in 1988 and served on the board of trustees of Admiral Bend Homeowners Association in Farragut. Charlie was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Survivors: wife of 57 years, Marge Mackay; children and spouses, Diane and Walter Barsce of Farragut, Bruce and Barbara Mackay of Allentown, Pa., Chuck and Cheryl Mackay of Rahway, N.J.; grandchildren, Michael and Brian Barsce, Chris and Tim Mackay, Jamie-Lynn Mackay; great-grandson, Connor Mackay; brother, Glenn Mackay of Naples, Fla.; several nieces and many friends. HATMAKER, Connie Darlene
age 47, of the Solway Community Knoxville passed away suddenly Thursday evening, May 4, 2006, at her home. Connie was a member of Westside Community Church of God. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and loved flowers. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Davis. Survivors: husband, Ted Hatmaker; sons and daughters-in-law, Travis and Rebecca Pless, Joshua and Rachel Pless; grandchildren, Brady and Bella Pless, who were the joys of her life; parents, Roy and Genis Davis and five brothers. The family received friends Saturday followed by funeral services at Westside Community Church of God on Dogwood Road. Interment will follow at Marietta Cemetery. BOWMAN, Mildred Kate McCarter
age 84, of Knoxville, daughter of the late Wesley and Belle Thomas McCarter, died Saturday May 6, 2006, at Brakebill Nursing Center. She was a member of Berean Bible Church and retired after many years as an administrative assistant with the Knoxville FBI and U.S. Attorney’s office. Mildred was preceded in death by grandson, Chad Kerley, sister, Meda Sentnell and brother, Hubert McCarter. She is survived by her loving family: husband of 61 years, the Rev. Kenneth H. Bowman Sr; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth (Ken) H. Bowman Jr. and wife, Sherry, of Dallas, Texas, Daniel (Dan) M. Bowman and wife, Annette, of Knoxville; daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Ann Lockhart of Knoxville; grandchildren, Kenneth (Kent) Bowman III and wife, Robin, Whitney Rogers and husband, Stephen, Kimberly (Kim) Rene Lockhart and husband, Andy Pirkle; great-grandchildren, Alex and Kylie Bowman, Danielle and Reagan Rogers, Brayden Kerley, Cinna Lockhart and Amelia Pirkle; sisters, Ercie McNeil and Evelyn Peavler, both of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews. Funeral Service was Tuesday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with her husband, the Rev. Kenneth H. Bowman Sr., officiating. The family and friends met and left Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel Wednesday and proceed to Tennessee Veterans Cemetery for a graveside service. BAILEY, William Homer
age 83, of Kingston passed away Thursday May 4, 2006, at the Oak Ridge Methodist Medical Center. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of the Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist Church. He was retired from Rockwood Chamberlain Memorial Hospital and was a lifetime farmer. Preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Dora Ladd Bailey; daughter, Dorene Bailey; sister, Virginia Guettner and brother, Vance Bailey. Survived by his wife, Lizzie Newport Bailey; daughters, Rosannah Jenkins and Mary Palmer of Kingston, Patricia Boyd of Farragut; sons, Henry, Richard and Robert Bailey of Kingston, Wallace Bailey of Lenoir City and Tommy Newport of Duff; sister-in-law, Sue Bailey of Loudon; 12 grandchildren;16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The family received friends from Saturday with funeral services to follow in the Click Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Dewey Brown and Elder Gary Massengill officiating. CRONAN, Dr. Thomas Larkin, III
age 64, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, at his Holston Hills home. Dr. Cronan was professor emeritus of exercise physiology at Carson Newman College. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education at Louisiana State University, his master’s degree in physical education at Northwestern State in Louisiana, and his doctorate in exercise physiology at The University of Tennessee. He was presented the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Citadel; the Distinguished Service Award from the Tennessee Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. An LSU track and field letterman, he competed in Master’s Track and Field and was the National Pentathlon Champion and a national runner-up in the decathlon. An life-long avid outdoorsman and promoter of wellness, Cronan was an Eagle Scout as a youth and hiked the 2,160 mile Appalachian Trail (Georgia to Maine) in his late 1950s. During his W.A.R. (wellness, attitude, research) against cancer, he rode his motorcycle 7,300 miles across the country and appeared on Good Morning America to promote cancer awareness. He was a member of Central Baptist Church of Bearden where his commitment to Christ led him to serve his church as deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a member and past chair for Baptist Health System Board of Directors of Health Ventures, a member of Rotary Club of Jefferson City and the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness. Above all, he was a devoted Christian, loving husband, father, “Poppy,” and dedicated friend and teacher. Dr. Cronan was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas L. Cronan Jr. and Edna Reidinger Cronan. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joan Cowart Cronan; daughters, Kristi and husband, Rhett Benner, Stacey and husband, Kent Bristow; grandchildren, Quinn and Reese Benner, and Chase and Reed Bristow; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jackie and LeRoy Owens of Baton Rouge, La., Janice and David Luckett of Niceville, Fla., Joy and Gene Corcoran of Springs City; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Jenise Cronan of Houston, Texas. A Celebration of Life service was Sunday at Central Baptist Church of Bearden with Dr. Larry Fields officiating. The family gathered with friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
