ARWOOD, Joe Edward Sr.,
age 73, of Farragut, formerly of South Knoxville and Roane County passed away early Wednesday morning, Aug. 16, 2006, at Parkwest Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Joe retired from ORNL in 1994 with more than 30 years of service and was a craft supervisor at the HIFR. He was a member of Cherokee Lodge No. 728 F&AM and a 32nd degree Mason. Joe was a member of the International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local. He was an avid Vol fan and supporter, and loved to camp. Joe was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Evelyn Bradburn Arwood; parents, Bruce and Mattie Wilkins Arwood; brother, Gene Arwood. Survivors: wife of 30 years, Edna Arwood; daughter, Vicky Harmon and husband, Mitchell Lemons, of Kingston; sons, Joe Arwood Jr. and wife, Kathy, of Karns, James Arwood of Farragut; stepson, Ricky Allen and wife, Periza, of Corpus Christi, Texas; grandchildren, Joey, Katina, Jennifer, Nicky, Derick, Ryan, Keith, Klint, Travis and Kristy; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, the Rev. Jack Arwood of Morristown and Benny Arwood of Detroit, Mich.; sisters, Mary Newman of Friendsville and Sherry Lowery of Crossville; several nieces and nephews. The family received friends Thursday in the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel followed by a Masonic service conferred by Cherokee Lodge. Funeral services followed with the Rev. Jack Arwood officiating. Family and friends gathered Friday at Zion’s Chapel Cemetery in Louisville for graveside services. BEMBEN, Alberta Maxine,
age 85 of Knoxville, formerly of Barrington Hills, Ill., passed away Wednesday morning, Aug. 16, 2006. Survivors: husband of 47 years, Robert L. Bemben; son, Charles Rolando of Carmel, Ind.; sister, Betty Ann Turchi of Clinton, Ind. Interment will be in Helts Prairie Cemetery in Clinton at an undetermined date. CONNORS, John Howard
age 82, passed away peaceably at his home in Knoxville Friday, Aug. 18, 2006, from complications brought on by Parkinson’s disease. Mr. Connors was born in New York City but lived most his life in and around Newark, N.J. His last years were in residence at Knoxville, so family could provide support. John served in World War II as a navigator in the Pacific Theater, flying many combat missions. After the war he returned to Rutgers University where he went received his bachelor’s degree and went on to graduate from Rutgers Law School. Upon graduation, John immediately joined the FBI as a special agent from 1951until 1976. Most of his career was in the Newark FBI Office where he was among the first agents, nationally, assigned to the “Top Hoodlum” program of 1957 that grew into the Organized Crime Division of the FBI. John remained in the Organized Crime Squad C-4 until 1969 when he became supervisor of the second Organized Crime squad formed in New Jersey, C-7. During his time in the FBI he received several awards from FBI Directors Hoover, Gray and Kelley for superior work, beginning in 1959 with the first award issued in the FBI’s fight against organized crime. Upon retirement from the FBI, John became the first head of security for the New Jersey Sports Complex where the New York Giants and the New York Jets play. After a few years he went to work briefly for the insurance company Crumb and Fosters as head of security but than went to work for Caeser’s World, the parent company of the casinos and hotels. He was a senior vice president of corporate security for the next 15 years, retiring at age 70 at the Caesar’s Atlantic City. He became a regular speaker at the FBI Academy and other law enforcement agencies on criminal activities in the Casino industry. John was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Towey Connors; sister Helen Connors; grandchildren Elizabeth Connors and Christopher Coes. He is survived by his wife of more than 57 years, Doris Connors; seven children, Michael Connors, Kathleen Connors, Kevin Connors and wife, Donna, Brendan Connors, Maureen Coes and husband, David, Eileen Connors, Helene Crowson and husband, Robert; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family received friends Monday at All Saints Catholic Church in Knoxville with a mass following with the Rev. Tony Dickerson celebrant. SACCHI, Edward Joseph Jr.,
age 77, of West Knoxville, native of Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Edward Joseph and Clementine Pippa Sacchi Sr., died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006. He attended Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church and was retired from General Electric with more than 36 years service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He is survived by his loving family, wife of 53 years, Adelaide Guardino Sacchi; son, Wayne Phillip Sacchi, all of Knoxville; daughter and son-in-law, Paulla Lynn and Kevin Chubb of Ossippee, N.H.; grandchildren, Renee, Janine and Brent Kennedy; great-grandchildren, Jacob and Teagan Hammond; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Bob Wranovics of Staten Island, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was Friday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with the Rev. Vernon Holstad officiating, interment following at Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. HINKLE, Andrew Thomas,
age 18, a wonderful, loving and caring son passed away Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006, at his home in West Knoxville. He was a member of Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church. Andrew was a 2006 graduate of Bearden High School where he was captain of the state championship soccer team and member of the National Honor Society. Andrew played for the Diadora Impact Soccer Team and the Stars Soccer Team. Andrew would have been a freshman at The University of Tennessee this fall. He is survived by his parents, Jim and Linda Hinkle; brothers, Brian Hinkle and Matthew Hinkle, all of Knoxville; paternal grandfather, James Hinkle Sr. of Cumberland, Md.; maternal grandfather, Austin Thomas Clarke of Liverpool, England; aunts and uncles, Linda and John Berkenbaugh of Barboursville, W.Va., Jeanette and Jimmy McKibbin, Terry and Angela Clarke, Brian and Angela Clarke, and Kevin Clarke, all of Liverpool, England; and a host of cousins. A Celebration of Life Service was held Saturday at Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nathan Malone and the Rev. Wil Cantrell officiating. Interment followed at Edgewood Cemetery. age 91, of Knoxville, native of Houma, La., daughter of the late Harry and Argentine DuFrene King, passed away Saturday, Aug. 19, 2006, at Parkwest Medical Center. She was a member of West Hills Baptist Church and The Keenagers Group of the Church, former member of West Hills Garden Club and Bearden Chapter O.E.S. She is survived by her loving family, husband of 62 years, Marvin W. West; children and their spouses, David and Barbara Pitre of Covington, La., Marcia and Col. Harry Callicotte of Elizabethtown, Ky., Mike and Jody West of Athens; grandchildren, Major Christopher Gibson of Seoul, Korea, Michael Gibson of Lexington, Ky., and Meghan West of Johnson City; great-grandchildren, Alexandria Nora, Adeline and Eyan Thomas Gibson; sister, Mearline Rutt of St. Petersburg, Fla.; brothers, Clifford King of Metaire, La. and Leonard King of Chalmette, La.; several nieces and nephews. WALTERS, Amos Rule
age 86, of the Hardin Valley Community died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 26, 2006, at Parkwest Medical Center. Amos was an active member of Marietta Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He retired from the K-25 plant in Oak Ridge. Amos was an avid gardener and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, H. E. Walters, Garnet West, Lillie Coward, Ralph Walters and Barbara Walters. Survivors: wife, Marjorie Walker Walters; sisters, Clara Miller of Karns, Margaret Bohannon of Daytona Beach, Fla., Martha Haun and husband, Cecil, of Claxton; twin brother, the Rev. Albert Walters of Powell; brother, Edward Walters and wife, Ruth, of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews; special care givers, Lester Humphrey and Mary Robinson.
