HEILMAN, Miriam Anderson,
of Knoxville, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006. She was a Methodist. Her survivors include her husband, Aubrey M. Heilman; daughters and sons-in-law, Lida H. and W. Coleman Bryan of Knoxville, Sally H. and David Beavers of Nashville; grandchildren, Miriam Baker Swank and husband, Steve, Charles Carter Baker III and wife, Nicole, Emily Baker Cox and husband, Dan, all of Nashville, William C. Bryan IV and Brent Heilman Bryan, both of Knoxville; four great-grandchildren, Lucas Everton Swank, Anderson Baker Swank, Baxter Bryan and Elyse Bryan; and two sisters, Doris Brown of Inman, S.C., and Katherine McClellan of Marietta, Ga. The family received friends followed by a funeral service at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with David Beavers officiating. Interment followed in Tennessee Veterans’ Cemetery. Pallbearers: Bill and Brent Bryan, Carter Baker, Steve Swank and Dan Cox. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the North Knoxville Exchange Club. SHARPE, Ruth Evelyn Layman,
age 88, of Knoxville, daughter of the late Beecher and Callie Strange Layman, passed away Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at White County Hospital in Sparta. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Knoxville, and the Married Couples Sunday School Class. Ruth retired from the U.S. government in Oak Ridge. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Gerald E. Sharpe; brother, Ray Layman. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Janet Sharpe of Cookeville; granddaughter, Chelsea Sharpe; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Floyd and Lucille Sharpe, Bobbie Layman, all of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews. Funeral Service was Wednesday Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Galyon and the Rev. Dan Moore officiating. MITCHELL, Mildred,
age 88, of Dallas, Ga., passed away Thursday afternoon, Nov. 23, 2006 in Knoxville. Mildred was a member of Mt. Olivet Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas. She was preceded in death by her longtime husband, Robert Earl Mitchell. Survivors: sons, Dr. Donald E. Mitchell and wife, Shirley, of Knoxville, Robert Raymond Mitchell and wife, Sandra, of Dallas; grandchildren, Kim, Lori, Michele, Donnie, Chad and Shane; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including Richard and Alan Brannon. The family received friends Saturday at Clark Funeral Home in Hiram, Ga. Funeral services were Sunday in the Clark Funeral Home Chapel with interment following in the Dallas Memorial Gardens. LAWHON, Hazel L. McKinney,
age 100, passed away Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006, at her Knoxville home. She was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and for many years she was a Gray Lady at Eastern State Hospital. She was a member of the Westmoreland Garden Club where, with the help of her husband, John, she maintained the entrance and water mill at Westmoreland and were co-founders of the Westmoreland Christmas Tree. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Barbara McKinney and her husband, John W. Lawhon Sr. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Marilyn Lawhon Knoxville; two grandchildren, Johnny Lawhon and wife, Pam, Susan Murphy and husband, Rick; great-grandchildren, Kandis Shepard, Sarah Lawhon, Madison, Colton and Kadi Murphy; and great-great-granddaughter, Lily Boyer. The family would like to express special thanks to Hazel Lazenby, Viola Bowers, Gwen Welch, Sherry Welch, and Dr. William Broome and his staff for their loving care of Hazel. HORTON Jr., Gardner Stone,
age 68, of Knoxville, passed away Thursday evening, Nov. 23, 2006, at his home after a lengthy illness. He was retired from The University of Tennessee Medical Center as a drug and alcohol counselor and was manager of industrial relations at Cornerstone of Recovery. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue S. Horton; daughter, Libby Beasley and husband, James; son, Gardner S. Horton III and wife, Kathy; step-grandson, Eric Beasley. Family and friends met Sunday at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Athens, for a graveside service with the Very Rev. John C. Ross officiating. The family received friends Saturday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
KIRKLAND, Sara Ruth Warters,
age 70, of Knoxville, passed away quietly after a long illness in the early afternoon on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006. She was the faithful and devoted wife of retired U.S. Navy Capt. Thomas J. Kirkland III. They were married in December 1957, nearly 49 years ago. She served dutifully as the wife of a naval aviator, raising four children in postings around the world including Okinawa, Hawaii and throughout the United States. She felt that her most precious gift was her family and her four children and her life was lovingly centered around being a mother and wife to her husband. Sara was an active member and volunteer of her beloved Episcopal Church of the Ascension. During her life, she worked tirelessly as a volunteer for many organizations, including Navy Relief and the Episcopal churches she and her husband attended throughout the United States and the world. Reading and gardening were among her favorite pastimes. She will be ever remembered as a kind and adventurous spirit as in her youth. Sara is survived by her husband, Thomas J. Kirkland III; daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly Kirkland Bartlett and Beecher A. Bartlett of Knoxville, Margaret Kirkland Watkins and Todd Watkins of Atlanta, Ga. and Sara Kathryn Kirkland Shattuck of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas J. Kirkland IV and Catherine Crews Kirkland of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Taylor, Matthew, Sara Kathryn, Margaret, Mary Withers, Emily and Adickes; mother, Margaret Warters Owens of Maryville; and brother and sister-in-law, Robert L. and Susan A. Warters of Houston, Texas. A celebration of the life of Sara Ruth Warters Kirkland was held Saturday at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension with the Rev. Mervin Dunn officiating. HSIEH, Lawrence,
age 88, of Knoxville, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007. He was a loving father and devoted grandfather. He was born in China and immigrated to the United States in 1957 where he pursued his love of education by obtaining his master’s degree from Kansas State University. He retired from TVA after 25 years of service as a civil engineer. He continued his interests through publishing papers and extensive travels to China. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Florence, his five children: Catherine Liu and husband, Charles, Clifford Hsieh and wife, Ruby, Ruby Yuan and husband, Robert, Ruth Young and husband, K.C., Clare Hsieh and wife, Lisa; 12 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral Service was Tuesday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with the Rev. Robert Bowman officiating. A private interment was at Pleasant Forest Cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
