FRENCH, Benjamin Jack
FRENCH, Benjamin Jack, age 69, of Knoxville passed away late Friday evening, Oct. 24, 2003 at his home. French was a member of Central Baptist Church of Bearden. He was a military policeman in the Korean War stationed in Japan. French was preceded in death by his parents, R. R. “Doc” and Hilda French and brother, Bobby French all of Blaine. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Marjorie Hill French; son, Jack Randall French of Atlanta; daughter, Margo Jacqueline French of Key West; grandson, Joseph Nigel French of Atlanta; brother, Gary French of Blaine; nieces, Sheila Emory of Blaine and Laura Rose of Knoxville; nephew, Tim French of Blaine; great-niece, Cheyanne Emory of Long Beach, N.Y.; father and mother-in-law Joseph H. and Meredith R. Hill of Knoxville. The family received friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel with funeral services following at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Lawson officiating. POLLARD, Raymond Lee
POLLARD, Raymond Lee, age 61, of Knoxville went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003. Ray was a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather. He was a devoted member of First Baptist Concord. He was an employee of BWXT-Y-12 for 24 years. His interests were family, gardening, photography, genealogy, outdoors, amateur radio, computers, and music. Ray served six years in the Air National Guard. He was preceded in death by parents, Charlie and Lottie Elrod Pollard; Stepfather, Taylor Watson. Survived by wife of 34 years, Linda Pollard; sons Greg Pollard and wife Tracey of Huntsville, Ala., Conley Orick and wife Sonja of Kingston, daughters Kristi and husband Brad Rightmyer, Tina and husband Danny Vest both of Knoxville; grandchildren Daniel Vest, Ryan and Brady Orick, David and Jason Pollard; sister, Charlotte and husband Jim Loposser of Lenoir City; stepbrother, Bobby Watson; stepsister, Shirley Heriegel; cousins, Joyce Trottie and Merrie Irene Harrell; several special nieces and nephews. We celebrated his new life in heaven by receiving friends on Monday, Oct. 20, 2003 from 6 to7:45 p.m. with funeral services to following at 8 p.m. in the Chapel of First Baptist Concord with the Rev. Steve Peek officiating. Family and friends met at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Ridge Memorial Park on Bethel Valley Road for graveside services. Pallbearers were Greg Pollard, Conley Orick, Danny and Daniel Vest, Brad Rightmyer, Eric Drake, Ralph and Daryl Adkins. Honorary pallbearers were Ryan and Brady Orick. GROOMS, Blanche Wilson
GROOMS, Blanche Wilson, born March 12, 1912, was the child of Audley Rhea (A.R.) Wilson and Edna Lewis Moore Wilson, at 407 Dawson Place, South Knoxville died Sunday evening, Oct. 19, 2003 at the Little Creek Sanitarium at the age of 91. The family was well known and active in the old Graystone Presbyterian Church. Blanche was a charter member and Ruling Elder at Parkway Presbyterian, sang in choirs and was active in Women of the Church throughout her life. In retirement, she worked with FISH of Knox County and was a Red Cross volunteer at Parkwest Hospital. She attended old Knoxville High School, graduated from Young High School in 1930, attended Maryville College and Draughan’s Business School, and graduated from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s in education. Grooms was married to Gordon A. Grooms of Seaman, Ohio, at Graystone Presbyterian Church, May 24, 1935. The couple met as students at Maryville College. Upon marriage, Blanche Grooms moved to southern Ohio. In 1943 the family moved to Oak Ridge where Eastman Kodak and later Union Carbide employed Mr. Grooms. For several intervening years, the family lived in Florida, Moore Haven and then Inverness, where Mr. Grooms was a high school principal and she was the school secretary. Grooms taught in Knox County schools – Galbreath ’32-’35 and later at several others including Hardin Valley, Ball Camp, Ridgedale, Cedar Bluff and Karns and retired in 1973. The family purchased and operated a large farm in the HardinValley-Solway community in 1954 and remained there until Grooms moved to Shannondale’s Retirement and Assisted Living facilities. In February 2003, she moved to Little Creek Sanitarium on Northshore Drive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon A. Grooms, siblings, Eugene M. Wilson, Theron D. Wilson, Marshall A. Wilson, Catherine Wilson Kennette, Willett R. Wilson, H. Clark Wilson, and Dr. Frank E. Wilson. Survivors: sister, Mary Wilson Clark of Maryville; children, Gaye Grooms Greer Honeycutt and husband Kenneth E. of Knoxville, Gary A. Grooms and wife Ann McGuire Grooms of Gainesville, Fla., Dennis P. Grooms and wife Linda East Grooms of Harriman, and Dale A. Grooms and wife Shari Harb Grooms of Knoxville; grandchildren, Jan Greer Pipkin, Lisa Greer Prater, Leslie Greer Knox, Greg A. Grooms, Kathryn Grooms, Barbara Grooms, Paula E. Grooms, and Ryan Grooms, deceased; great-grandchildren Jessica Pipkin, Patrick Wilson Pipkin, Tyler Knox, Kerrie Knox, Mark Prater, Rachel Prater, and Harrison Rinda Grooms. A Memorial Service to honor her life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Parkway Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Charles Book, former pastor of the church, and the Rev. Jody McKewen will officiate. The family will greet friends in the Fellowship Hall after the service. The immediate family will have a private interment at Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens. WHITAKER, Mark J.
WHITAKER, Mark J., age 54, died Sunday Oct. 12, 2003, at his west Knoxville home. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and former member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Whitaker was a member of Otisville Lodge No. 401 F&AM, Otisville, Mich., where he was a 32nd degree Mason. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving 1965-1972 in Vietnam. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Whitaker; children, Spencer J. Whitaker, Laurie Whitaker, and Mark J. Whitaker, Jr.; and grandson, Julian Blaine. Funeral mass was Oct. 15 at All Saints Catholic Church where Father Brent Shelton officiated. Interment followed in Tennessee Veterans’ Cemetery. The family received friends Oct. 14 with a Masonic service by Masters Lodge No. 244 F&AM at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
SNEED, Wayne Carl
SNEED, Wayne Carl, age 68, died Sunday Oct. 12, 2003, at his West Knoxville home after a gallant battle with cancer. He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. Sneed was a talented craftsman and artist and member of the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild and life member of the Foothills Craft Guild. He had retired from Aluminum Co. of America where he was a member of the Twenty-five Year Club. Preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Edith Sneed and father-in-law, Otis R. Bryant. His survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Dottie) Bryant Sneed; brother and sister-in-law, Lowell E. and Carole W. Sneed of Friendsville; sister and brother-in-law, Berry Ann and George B. Schimpf of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; mother-in-law, Louella L. Bryant of Cleveland; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dr. Vernon and Cherie Bryant of Cleveland; aunt, Laura Robbie Stooksbury of Andersonville, Tenn.; nieces and nephews, George S. Schimpf, Jenny Ann Schimpf, D. Mitchell Bryant, Linda Bryant Batmess, Scott A. Bryant; as well as many cousins and other relatives and friends. Funeral service was Oct. 14 at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with the Rev. Carl White and the Rev. Jack Smith officiating. MIRKHAN, Fahima
MIRKHAN, Fahima, age 94, of Farragut passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at Ft. Sanders Parkwest Medical Center. Fahima was a member of First Baptist Church Concord. Fahima was a retired teacher of 45 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Ibrahim Mirkhan. Survivors include her daughter, Fadia Alvic of Farragut, son, Namir Mirkhan and wife, Madeleine of Sao Paulo, Brazil, grandchildren Phil Alvic of Knoxville, Donia and husband John Swisher of Cincinnati, Ohio, Amanda Mirkhan and Carolina Mirkhan both of Sao Paulo, Brazil and a great-granddaughter Alexis Swisher of Cincinnati, Ohio; sister, Rachel Toma of California and several nieces and nephews. A church service celebrating Fahima’s 94 years of life was held on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of First Baptist Church Concord. MASON, Evelyn Marian Smith
MASON, Evelyn Marian Smith, age 83, of Knoxville, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003 at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center. She was born Oct. 2, 1920 in Vernon, N.Y., to Harry Leroy and Carrie Bierre Smith. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She was an ensign in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, serving in St. Augustine, Fla., New Orleans, La., and Galveston, Texas. She was a graduate of New York State Teachers College in Albany, N.Y., taught in the Vernon, N.Y., public school, and attended law school at the University of Illinois. Mason’s rich and active life included being with her family, sharing stories, laughing and playing games. She was happiest with her family gathered together in all its generations and personalities. She loved being with people, playing bridge with her friends, planting flowers, reading, singing, playing, and listening to music, writing, needlework, walking, and the Michigan Dunes. Mason was an advocate for peacemaking during and after the Vietnam War and served for several years on Chicago’s ecumenical World Without War Council. She was active in her community and church, serving at FISH as well as on boards and committees, and in women’s guilds. She was a strong advocate of quality public education. She served on the Library Board of the Oak Park, Ill., Public Library, and as a leader in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts until 1963. She managed the law offices of William E. Mason for many years. Survivors: husband of 60 years William E. “Bill” Mason III, her daughters and sons-in-law the Rev. Barbara Lynne Mason and Dr. John M. Rathbun of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Carol and Richard Purdy of Stevensville, Mich.; sons and daughters-in-law William E. “Bill” IV and Janet H. Mason of Knoxville, and Thomas Winslow and Michelle Mason of Elmhurst, Ill.; grandchildren Christine Mason Chitwood and husband Robert, William E. Mason V, Clark Short, Rachael Kathryn Mason, Paige Elizabeth Mason, and Blake Thomas Mason; brother and sister-in-law Richard “Dick” and Ginny Smith of West Boylston Mass.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Lowell B. “Jerry” and Betty Mason of Kalamazoo Mich.; and four nieces and nephews. Memorial service was Oct. 12 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Dr. Friedrich Schilling Jr. officiating. The family received friends following the service at the church.
