Brown, Robert E. (Brownie/Ace), age 78, of Lenoir City, passed away Friday September 1, 2000, at the Baptist Health Care Center, after an extensive illness. Brownie was really loved by his care-givers and he received lots of TLC. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lenoir City. Brownie spent most of his working career in the grocery business and was loved and appreciated by all of his customers. Although he will be sorely missed, his family is comforted in knowing that he is resting in peace with the Lord. Brownie was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Brown. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ursa Stafford Brown; daughters, Judy Smalling and husband Gerald of Brentwood, Tn., Brenda Crabtree of Woodstock, Ga.; grandchildren: Michael Smalling, Christi Smalling, Marcus Crabtree, Melissa Smalling, Alicia Smalling and Rebeca Smalling; great- grandchildren, Jordyn and Jessica Smalling; brothers, Kenneth Brown; sisters, Neva Miller and Imogene Deathridge; numerous nieces and nephews. Masse, Eugene Richard (Gene), age 51, of Knoxville, passed way suddenly September 2, 2000 at his home. Gene was a member of Virtue Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict serving with the U.S. Marines. Gene was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Masse. Survivors: children, Shannon Masse of Myrtle Beach, SC, Lacey Masse of Farragut, Desiree' and Brandon Masse both of Sevierville; mother, Joan Masse of Massachusetts; sisters, Joyce, Linda, Pam and Roberta; several nieces and nephews; mothers of his children, Carolyn Masse of Farragut and Autumn Lane of Sevierville. Funk, Donald A. age 58 of the Tellico Village Community, Loudon, formerly of Michigan, went to be with the Lord suddenly Monday, September 4, 2000 at the Loudon Hospital. He was a member of Tellico Village Community Church. Retired from Ford Motor Co. after 30 years service. He was a loving husband who enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved golfing, boating and everything about his retired life in East Tennessee. Survived by his wife of 32 years, Margaret M. Funk; parents, William & Norma Jean Funk of Englewood, Fl.; twin sister, Jeanne Ruud & husband, Richard of Palm Desert, Ca.; nieces, Peggy Ayala & husband, Richard of Sacramento, Ca., Deborah Edler & husband, Richard of Palos Verdes Est., Ca.; mother-in-law, Clarice Mickelsen of Princeton, W. Gupta, Ved P., age 67, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday afternoon September 5, 2000. Ved was born August 7, 1933 in Naushehra, India. He was a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharaghpur India. Ved immigrated to the United States in 1969 and became a United States citizen shortly thereafter. Ved was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who dedicated his life to his family and community. Ved was an active member of the Toastmaster Club and was generous in volunteering his life to the Knoxville community, as well as to his home land. He was instrumental in building the Hindu Community Center and was the founder of Seva Dal, a non profit organization dedicated to the education of under priviledged in India. He recently returned from a two month tour in India where he established educational programs in underdeveloped schools. He devoted his time and energy as a community leader: helping with tax and financial planning; teaching leadership and reading skills to youth organizations; and as a mediator in Knox County. He recently retired from Lockheed Martin Energy Systems Inc., Y-12 and K-25 plants, after 21 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vidya Dhar and Raj Gupta. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Prabha Gupta; sons and daughters-in-law, Navin and Savita Gupta of Greensboro North Carolina, Neer and Shalu Gupta of New York New York; grandchildren, Priya and Nisha Gupta both of Greensboro North Carolina; brother, Om Prakash Gupta of India; sisters, Savita Gupta of Albany New York, Nirmal Gupta of Nashville Tennessee, Shakuntala Gupta of India; and many nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones in the United States and India. Cardwell, Roy G. Jr., age 73, of Lenoir City, died suddenly early Thursday morning, September 7, 2000, at his home. Roy G. was a member of Central United Methodist Church, the Chancel Choir and the United Volunteer Sunday School Class, which he had served as president. He was a member and past master of Avery Lodge #593 F&AM, and a 32nd degree mason. Roy G. was employed with Union Carbide X-10 from 1952 until 1981, when he moved to Operations Research, until his retirement in 1989. After retirement, he did consulting with Pinkerton Government Service from early 1990 until 1994. Roy G. was a veteran of World War II serving with the Army Air Corp. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy G. Cardwell Sr. and Clara Clarke Cardwell. Roy G. is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara Johnston Cardwell; Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, William R. and June Johnston, Mary and Bunk Austin; Roy G. was a very special uncle to his nieces and nephews and his God-children, W. He was retired from the Los Angeles Rapid Transit District. Curtis was a veteran of World War II serving with the Army. Stooksbury, Mary Shubert of Lenoir City passed away Wednesday morning, September 20, 2000, at Ft. Sanders Park West Hospital after a long battle with cancer and osteoporosis. Mary was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Lenoir City and an honorary member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Clinton, where she was a member for many years. She belonged to Clinch Valley Chapter Order of Eastern Star in Andersonville. Mary worked as a secretary at O. R. N. L. for 22 plus years. She loved her home and family. Before she became ill, she loved the beach and loved to travel. Mary was Preceded in death by parents, Joe (Buck) Shubert and Grace Akins Shubert; sister Saranelle Shubert; brother,Edward Shubert. Survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Kyle Stooksbury; daughter and son-in-law, Jane & Jim Slaughter of Lenoir City; beloved granddaughter who was her pride and joy, Sara Elizabeth Slaughter; sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Wayne Howell of Lenoir City; brother and sister-in-law, Benny and Fannie Rhea Shubert of Lenoir City; sisters-in-law, Ruth Human of Norris and Dorothy Heth and husband Chester of Beaufort, S.C.; several beloved nieces and nephews. Powers, Anthony James (Tony), age 89, of Farragut, formerly of San Pedro, California passed away September 19 at UT Hospital. Mr. Powers was a former parishioner of Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in San Pedro, and presently a parishioner of St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Farragut. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Navy. He was preceded in death by his brother Patrick Powers. Tony is survived by his wife of 35 years, Rosemarie Powers, sons Anthony Barry Powers of Charlotte, NC, Kevin Patrick Powers and his wife Katie of Charlotte, NC, Michael Francis Powers and his wife, Jennifer of Cincinnati, OH. Grandchildren Casey Patrick Powers and Erin Michele Powers of Charlotte, NC; sister, Mary Shelton of Knoxville. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Friday at 10:00 A.M. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church with Father John Dowling officiating. Family and friends will gather at 2 P.M. Little, James William, age 61, of Lenoir City passed away Wednesday evening September 20, 2000 at Park West Hospital. James was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors: wife of 19 years, Barbara Wilson Little; daughters and sons-in-law, Nellie Mae and Rev. Larry Collins of York South Carolina, Patricia and Jerry McConkey of Collison Illinois; 5 grandchildren; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; sister and brother-in-law, Vera Louise and David Bean of Saraland Alabama; brother and sister-in-law, Robert Lee and Pat Little Jr. of Eight Mile Alabama; Funeral services 2 P.M. Whitaker, Rev. James C., age 87, of Lenoir City, a retired Methodist minister, passed away Thursday, September 21, 2000 at the Park West Hospital. He was born in Black River, Louisiana. Rev. Whitaker served pastorates in Louisiana, New Jersey and Tennessee. He was a Chaplain in W. W. II and was assigned aboard the USS Winged Arrow in the Pacific. Rev. Whitaker attended Asbury College, Vanderbilt, Emory, Drew and Oxford (England) Universities. At age 70, he received a masters degree in counseling from the University of Tennessee with honors. Rev. Whitaker actively participated in the communities where he lived. In his various pastorates, he built a church and educational building and started little league baseball, worked on environmental projects. He assisted little Ruby Bridges, the first black student, in attending public school in New Orleans. He was always interested in local and national politics, and as a young man attended the Democratic Convention. His library and writings are in the permanent collection of the Pitts Theological Library at Emory University. Rev. Whitaker is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mozelle (Renshaw) Whitaker; brother, Jimmy Whitaker of Unionville, Tn.; daughter, Anna Smith and her husband Jake of Boston, MA.; son, Bill Whitaker and wife Jane of Lenoir City; 4 grandchildren, Jeff Smith of Boston, Heather Adams of London, England, Laura Matzek of Hixson and David Whitaker of Lenoir City. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday in the Trinity United Methodist Church of Lenoir City where Rev. Whitaker has been a member. Rev. Michael Gregory, Cecil Benoit and Rev. Joe H. Barber will officiate. Interment will follow in the Lake View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin McFalls; sons, Samuel and Joseph McFalls; survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Harley McCrary of Hanna City Illinois; son, Marvin McFalls of Kingston TN; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Flora Torbet of Etowah TN; Ruby Best of Peoria Illinois and Neva Mae Bivens of Charleston South Carolina; brother, W.
