SHARRON McCoy (HAIR) POWDERS, 64 year old resident of Alva, Oklahoma, died May 30, 2007, at her home after a long battle with cancer. Memorial services will be held 6:00 P.M. Monday, June 4, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church in Alva with Reverend Judye Pistole officiating. Services are under the direction of the Zwanziger Funeral Home, Woodward, Oklahoma. On October 11, 1942, Sharron was born at Knoxville, Tennessee, to James M. Hair Jr. and Ruth McCoy (Nelson) Hair of Lenoir City, Tennessee. Sharron graduated from Lenoir City High School in 1960 and she attended college at Middle Tennessee State University (Murfreesboro) and the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) receiving her B.S. degree in Elementary Education from the latter in 1967. Sharron married Vernon N. Powders of Mooreland, Oklahoma, on June 21, 1967, at Lenoir City, Tennessee. They resided in Knoxville, Tennessee, until Vernon received his Ph. D., and then they moved to Sumter County Georgia where Sharron taught at New Era Elementary School and Vernon worked for Georgia Southwestern College in Americus. Sharron taught at New Era for three years and after the county was fully intergrated she moved to Eastview Elementary school where she taught two years. After living in a teacherage on the New Era campus for the first year in Georgia, Sharron and Vernon purchased a home in Americus, Georgia. Sharron left the classroom after five years of teaching and she and Vernon were blessed with two children, John (1972) and Laura (1974). During this time away from the classroom and raising two young children, Sharron attended graduate school at Georgia Southwestern College and received her M.S in education in 1976. In 1978, she went back to work for the Sumter County School system and again taught at Eastview Elementary School. She had taught several years in Tennessee before she and Vernon were married. In 1980, she and Vernon and the family moved to Alva, Oklahoma, where Vernon was employed by Northwestern Oklahoma State University. They were also farming in Woodward County, Oklahoma, on the family farm west of Mooreland. Sharron helped with the farming and worked part-time for Fran Brunsetter at the Frame in Alva. With Sharron’s love for antiques it was no surprise when she started her antique business under the name of Bird in the Nest Antiques by placing her items in antique malls starting in Woodward, Oklahoma, in 1988. During the following years she had booth space in malls at Buffalo, Kingfisher, El Reno, Oklahoma City, Weatherford, Blackwell and Alva, Oklahoma. In 2001 she established her business at 411 College in Alva. She loved buying and selling antiques, especially picture frames, stoneware, and primitive furniture. She participated in the Antique shows in Oklahoma and Texas. Sharron traveled extensively in her search for good antiques throughout much of the United States. Her travels on the antique trail were her vacations and she loved every minute and aspect of it, the searching, buying, refinishing, framing, and finally the sales were equally enjoyed. She is survived by her husband Vernon Powders and son John Powders, both of Alva; one daughter Laura Powders, Tulsa, Oklahoma; her mother Ruth Hair, brother and sister-in-law, David and Connie Hair, and niece, Amanda Hair, all of Lenoir City, Tennessee; niece Kelly Moser and two grand-nephews, Laint and Morgan, all of Sweetwater, Tennessee; and her mother-in-law Denzel Powders Bliss, Woodward, Oklahoma. Sharron was preceded in death by her father James M. Hair Jr. SHARRON WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED BY HER BEAUTIFUL SMILE AND SPIRIT.
