He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U. S. Army C Battery Field Artillery, in Normandy and the Rhineland. Norris, Bobby, age 67, of Lenoir City passed away Thursday, morning, January 11, 2001 at the Park West Medical Center. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Bobby retired from K-25 in Oak Ridge. He served in the United States Air Force. He was former owner of the Sports Shop in Lenoir City. Cupp, Ruth Blanton, age 89, of Lenoir City passed away on January 27, 2001. She was born Edna Ruth Sturgill on March 23, 1911 in Wise County, VA. She was married to George Dewey Blanton of Norton, VA from 1930 until his death in 1951. Surviving sons and daughter-in-laws are: Drs. Horace and Priscilla Blanton of Knoxville, TN; Robert and Ernestine Blanton and Steve and Betty Blanton, all of Lenoir City, TN. Surviving daughters and son-in-laws are Evelyn and Ray Hetman of Smyrna, TN; Carol and Elmer Smith (deceased) of Pembrooke Pines, FL; and Janice and John Graves of Knoxville, TN. Surviving brother and sister-in-law are Ed and Jackie Sturgill of Pound, VA. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 16 great- grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were daughter and son-in-law Geraldine and Keith Loyd of Columbus, IN. Siblings preceding Ruth in death were Shirley Sturgill Shipley of Kingsport, TN; Frank Sturgill of Oak Ridge, TN; and Joseph and Quince Sturgill, both of Wise County, VA. Edna Ruth and George Dewey moved with Horace and Geraldine to Norris, TN. in 1935 where Mr. Blanton was employed with the Tennessee Valley Authority in the construction of Norris Dam. Robert was born in Norris in 1936, and the family moved to Hiwassee Dam in North Carolina where Evelyn was born in 1938.
The family moved permanently to Lenoir City when construction of Fort Loudon Dam was started at the beginning of World War II. Carol was born in 1943 followed by Janice in 1948 and Steve in 1950. Following the death of George Dewey in 1951, Ruth single parented her children to adulthood. She was employed at Eastern State Psychiatric Hospital from 1964 until her retirement in 1977 as a psychiatric aide in the drug and alcohol unit. She was certified by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health as a psychiatric aide in 1968. She followed her state certification with continuing educational training at The Southeastern School of Alcohol Studies at the University of Georgia. She also completed courses of study in Developing a Therapeutic Community and Remotivation Techniques under the auspices of the Tennessee Department of Mental Health. Ruth was an expert quilter and her quilts reflected her creative spirit. She was an avid gardener and loved all aspects of nature.
Edna Ruth remarried in 1978 to Lois Ervil Cupp of Maryville, TN. who died in 1990. The family will receive family and friends at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City, TN. from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28. The Reverend Clay Mulford will officiate at the funeral services to be held in the chapel of Click Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 29 at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Lake View Cemetery. In honor of Ruth’s respect for education, contributions can made to the Lenoir City Public Library in lieu of flowers. Ruth dedicated her energy and efforts to her children, and she wrote in her journal in anticipation of her death:
Gerhart, Donald T. (Don), age 82, of Athens Georgia, formerly of Lenoir City Tennessee, passed away Saturday morning January 27, 2001 at his home. Don was of the Methodist faith. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the Army. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Dykes Gerhart; daughter, Sarah Gerhart; granddaughter, Melissa Norris. Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Donetta and Don Norris of Athens Georgia; grandchildren, Tracey and Steve Kell, Brian Dykes, Keith Dykes; great grandchildren, Deidre, Lauren and Donny Kell. Black, Shelton Glenn, age 69, of Farragut TN passed away at 1:05 P.M. Sunday, January 28, 2001 at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville TN. Glenn was a member of Dixie Lee Baptist Church. He received his bachelors and masters degrees from Texas A&M University. Glenn served as a 2nd LT. with the U.S. Army stationed in Kirch Goens Germany from February 1954 to September 1955. He was a regional sales representative for Con Agra and was also a certified agronomist. He had been an employee of Basic Resources of Knoxville and remained a share holder after his retirement. Survivors include his wife, Marie Black; daughter, Teresa Lynn Dicus of Victorville CA; sons, Doyle Glenn Black of Aurora CO and Keith Layne Black of Humble TX; grandchildren, Tara (24), Brian (23), Shannon (19), Earle (17), Grandison (11) and Caroline (10); brothers, Weldon Black of Mexia TX and Vannoy Black of Houston TX; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6- 8 p.m. Monday with a funeral service to follow at 8 p.m. at the Dixie Lee Baptist Church with Dr. Bruce Yates and Rev. Jim Clayton officiating. McFalls, Kimberly Waller (Kim), age 31, of Concord passed away suddenly Monday evening January 29, 2001, in an automobile accident. Kim was a loving and devoted mother to her daughters, Heather and Autumn McFalls. Matlock, Charles R., age 49, of Lenoir City passed away suddenly Monday January 29, 2001 in Washington D. C. Charles served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam as a military policeman. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles J. Matlock. Survivors: daughter, Tara Matlock of Knoxville; mother, Norma Scott of Jackson Miss.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul R. and Laurin Matlock of Jackson Miss., David and Dee Dee Matlock of Lenoir City; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Jim Leal of Pigeon Forge; several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will gather at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at the Woodlawn Cemetery for graveside services with Sister Lucille Potter Vickers and Rev. Rick Hutchison officiating.
