Reed, Lee Harrison (Sam), age 73, of Lenoir City, passed away Friday, October 10, 2003 at the Parkwest Hospital. He owned and operated AAA Plumbing for over 30 years. Sam served in the U. S. Army in Germany. He was a former pipefitter at Oak Ridge X-10 Plant. Sam was an avid Nascar fan and fisherman. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Lenoir City for many years. Betty retired from the Lenoir City School System after 42 years service. Kirkpatrick, Charles A. (Charlie), age 62, of Farragut passed away October 10, 2003 at Ft. Sanders Parkwest Medical Center. Charlie was a member of the Good Samaritan Episcopal Church. He was a devout musician who adored the works of John Phillip Sousa, and he was very involved in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia He earned a BS degree from Tennessee Technological University and a Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Charlie loved to fish with his son. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles E and Ruth Kirkpatrick and sister, Brenda Kirkpatrick. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Eleanor Kirkpatrick; son Chuck Kirkpatrick and his wife Donna of Knoxville; granddaughter, Lindsey Kirkpatrick; brother, Kenneth E. Kirkpatrick and wife, Marty of Smyrna, TN; and two nephews. Okvath, John Joseph III, age 59, of Knoxville, passed away Sunday afternoon at St. Mary's Hospice. John was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in Vietnam and was a Senoir Vice-President for Goody's Family Clothing. John is the father of Bryan and Nicolas Okvath of Phoenix, Arizona and the brother of Kenneth Okvath of Globe Arizona. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Opal Carroll Long, 81, died in a local nursing home Sunday morning, Oct 12, 2003. Mrs. Long was born on May 11, 1922 in Anniston, AL, the daughter of the late Virgie (Smith) and William Thomas Carroll. Her husband, Clyde Long preceded her in death in 1992. She grew up in Lenoir City, TN, and then lived all her married life in Calera, AL. She retired as a bookkeeper from the Calera School System, and just recently moved to NC to be near her sister. In her later years she truly loved traveling the US, and was a member of Morningside Baptist Church. Mrs. Long is survived by her son, Phillip Long of Asheville; her daughter, Carroll Ann Thorn of Birmingham, AL; her sisters, Betty Burton of Asheville and Nancy Riley of Duncanville, TX; and 4 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at Morningside Baptist Church, Asheville, NC, with Dr. David Hanson officiating. Pollard, Raymond Lee, age 61, of Knoxville went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 18, 2003. Ray was a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather. He was a devoted member of First Baptist Concord. He was an employee of BWXT-Y-12 for 24 years. His interests were family, gardening, photography, genealogy, outdoors, amateur radio, computers, and music. Ray served six years in the Air National Guard. He was preceded in death by parents, Charlie and Lottie Elrod Pollard; Stepfather, Taylor Watson. O'Neal, Mary Belle Hartline, age 86, of Lenoir City, went to be with her Lord on October 19, 2003. She was a member and Sunday School teacher at Nelson Street Baptist Church for many years. She retired from Charles H. Bacon Hosiery Mill. Preceded in death by her husband, Howard O'Neal along with her parents, one sister and several brothers. GROOMS, BLANCHE WILSON born March 12, 1912, was the child of Audley Rhea ("A.R.") Wilson and Edna Lewis Moore Wilson, at 407 Dawson Place, south Knoxville died Sunday evening, October 19, 2003 at the Little Creek Sanitarium at the age of 91. The family was well-known and active in the old Graystone Presbyterian Church. Blanche was a charter member and Ruling Elder at Parkway Presbyterian, Sang in choirs and was active in Women of the Church throughout her life. In retirement, she worked with FISH of Knox County and was a Red Cross volunteer at Parkwest Hospital. She attended old Knoxville High School, graduated from Young High School in 1930, attended Maryville College and Draughan's Business School, and graduated from U of Tennessee with B.A. in Education. Blanche was married to Gordon A. Grooms of Seaman, Ohio at Graystone Presbyterian Church, May 24, 1935. The couple met as students at Maryville College. Upon marriage, Blanche Grooms moved to southern Ohio. In 1943 the family moved to Oak Ridge, Tenn, where Mr. Grooms was employed by Eastman Kodak and later Union Carbide. For several intervening years, the family lived in Florida, Moore Haven and then Inverness, where Mr. Grooms was a high school principal and she was the school secretary. Blanche taught in Knox County schools – Galbreath ‘32-'35 and later at several others including Hardin Valley, Ball Camp, Ridgedale, Cedar Bluff and Karns and retired in 1973. The family purchased and operated a large farm in the HardinValley-Solway community in 1954 and remained there until Blanche moved to Shannondale's Retirement and Assisted Living facilities. In February, 2003, she moved to Little Creek Sanitarium on Northshore Drive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon A. Grooms, siblings,Eugene M. Wilson, Theron D. Wilson, Marshall A. Wilson, Catherine Wilson Kennette, Willett R. Wilson, H. Clark Wilson, and Dr. Frank E. Wilson. Survivors: sister, Mary Wilson Clark of Maryville; children, Gaye Grooms Greer Honeycutt and husband Kenneth E. of Knoxville, Gary A. Grooms and wife Ann McGuire Grooms of Gainesville, Fla., Dennis P. Grooms and wife Linda East Grooms of Harriman, and Dale A. Haskins. Rev. Thomas G. Sr., age 79, of Knoxville, formerly of Sweetwater, went home to be with the Lord early Wednesday morning, October 22, 2003 at St. Mary's Medical Center. Tom retired from REVCO in 1989. He was a Southern Baptist Minister. He retired from Mt. View Baptist Church in 1986. For over 20 years he was "Tom the Barber" at the Marble Front and Farragut Hotel Barber Shops. He was a veteran of World War II serving with distinction in the U. S. Navy aboard the USS Jupiter A K A 37. After seeing action in 8 separate battles, G.M.F.C. Haskins personally viewed the raising of the U S flag over Iwo Jima. He was a member of the American Legion Post #120 in Loudon. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Florence Burton Haskins. Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Peggy Haskins Snow and Clifford Snow of Oak Ridge; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas G. Whitlock, Wanda Jo of Bradenton, FL, formerly of Lenoir City, passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at Blake Hospital in Bradenton. She was born September 21, 1906 to Joseph and Bessie Moore Harvey. She had resided in Bradenton since 1966. Wanda was a member of West Bradenton Baptist Church since 1966 and the Order of Eastern Star for many years. She was the widow of Mack Whitlock who preceded her in death in 1980 and her son, James who passed away in 1937. She was also preceded in death by sisters: Mamie Abbott, Thelma Breazeale, Katie Webb and Ruth Harvey; brother, Ray Harvey. Reynolds, Harold Edward, age 62, of Knoxville, passed away suddenly Wednesday October 22, 2003. Harold was born July 18, 1941. He helped organize the Junior Golfers Association and was their first president. He graduated from Knoxville Catholic High School Class of 1959 and was captain of the golf team. He attended East Tennessee State University where was captain of the golf team. Harold was a veteran of the U S Navy and was stationed in Hawaii for two years. He was editor of the sports section of the Navy Paper and played on the Navy golf team. Harold was a retired PGA golf pro after 40 years in Castro Valley, California. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Thomas Reynolds Sr., Knoxville. Survivors: son, Andrew Reynolds of San Francisco, CA; mother, Mary R. Shewbrooks, John Burke (Jack), age 85, of Farragut passed away early Thursday morning, October 23, 2003 at his home. Jack was born October 19, 1918 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was retired from TVA as a mechanical engineer. He was also a nautical engineer and worked in a ship yard as a certified electrician. For several years he was a yacht captain based out of Lighthouse Point, Florida. Jack was a boat racer of inboard hydro planes until he retired at the age of 64. He was a member of Concord United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U S Army. Jack was preceded in death by his twin brother, William and brother, Nevin. Survivors: wife of 37 years, Edna Shewbrooks; son and daughter-in-law, John and Debi Shewbrooks of Waverly, Ohio; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and John Reynolds of Tallahasse, Florida, Ruth and Bryan Cook of Farragut; step sons and step daughters-in-law, Sandy and Karen Weeks of Vonore, Mike and Paula Weeks of Cleveland; 9 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; brother, Fred Shewbrooks of Wilmington, Delaware; several nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel with Rev. Catherine Nance officiating. Interment will be in the Tennessee State Veteran's Cemetery.
