Vest, Kenneth Sigurd, age 71, of Lenoir City,Passed away Tuesday evening September 18, 2001. Sigurd was born in Guntersville Alabama and moved to Lenoir City at the age of 11. He married his childhood sweetheart, Florence Brookshear Vest and together they owned and operated several restaurants and Holiday Inns. Afterwards he worked at Click Funeral Home, owned a real estate agency with Jack Pickel and Howard Rogers, taught at the Loudon County Vocational School and managed Weigel's Stores until his retirement. After his retirement he worked at ADESA and loved to Flea Market. Sigurd was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a member of Avery Lodge #593 F&AM, a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite. Sigurd was preceded in death by his wife Florence Vest; parents, Tom Vest and Lena McGehee Vest. Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and John Whitaker of Farragut and their daughter, Kelly Whitaker, Greg and Pam Vest of Greenback and their children, Ken Vest, Tina and Debra; great granddaughter, Aubrey Vest; sister, Lorene Giles of Spring City, sister and brother-in-law, Marnell and Ciberon Angel of Evansville; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Allen and June Brookshear of Fountain City, IN, Sue Brookshear of Lenoir City; several nieces and nephews. Cook, Cecil Faye, age 69, of Lenoir City passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at his home. He was retired from Dempster Brothers. Cecil was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving in the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post #120. Preceded in death by parents, Charlie and Mary Reynolds Cook; infant daughter, Sandra Faye Cook; several brothers and sisters. Survived by sons, Keith Cook and wife Susan of Knoxville, Terry Cook of Lenoir City; grandchildren, Joshua Cook, Sarah Cook and Morgan Cook; sister, Eliza Lenox of Woodstock, GA; the mother of his sons, Mary Sue Cook of Lenoir City; several nieces and nephews. Smith, James F. Jr. age 60, of Lenoir City,TN, passed away suddenly Thursday September 20, 2001, at his home. Jim had lived in Prince George's Co., Maryland,until his retirement. He served in the Marine Corp. Reserve Max 24. He worked for the U. S. Park Police, in Washington, D.C., for 24 years as a Lieutenant Jim was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by parents, James F. Smith Sr. and Regina D. Smith. Jim is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kathleen K. Smith; children, Jennifer E. Hall and husband, Robert of Orlando, FL, James F. Smith III of Baltimore, MD. and fiancee, Jennifer Anne Wilber of Atlanta, GA. and Stephanie E. Hiens and husband Donald of Brandywine, MD; sisters, Gretchen Tickle and husband, Roger of Houston, TX, Coleen Clemente of Hermistown, OR; Godchild, Karen Tickle; several nephews. Sims, Rev. Ottis A., age 66, of West Knoxville, passed away Saturday, September 22, 2001, at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center. Rev. Sims was a member of Paw Paw Plains Baptist Church in Lenoir City. He was a longtime Baptist Minister pastoring Hines Valley Baptist Church in Knoxville, Bell Avenue Baptist Church and Paw Paw Plains Baptist Church in Lenoir City. Rev. Sims owned and operated school buses in Knox Co. for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hobert A. and Rosia Presley Sims; brother, Jack Sims. Rev. Sims is survived by his wife of forty eight years, Charlene Hurst Sims; children: Mike Sims and wife Faye, Terry Tennant and husband, John all of Knoxville; grandsons: Justin Sims, Josh and Ben Tennant; brothers, W.J. Warner, Eva Ruth, age 79, of West Knoxville, passed away Monday morning, September 24, 2001, at her residence. Eva was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church. She was a veteran of World War II serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with the U.S. Army in New Guinea and the Philippines. She was retired as a civilian employee with the Department of the Army. Eva was a member of the Maryville VFW Post. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Adams and Edith Wacks Adams; brothers, Edward and David Adams; sister, Dorothy Adams. Survivors: husband of 43 years, Robert E. Dempsey, Maude Lillian, age 90, of Farragut, formerly of Booneville, Arkansas passed away Sunday evening, September 23, at the Farragut Healthcare Center. She was a retired teacher, business person, and a former director of a Head Start center. Maude was preceded in death by her husband, Dale R. Dempsey; parents, William H. and Willie Cobb Price; sisters, Olive Price Jones, Sallie Price Markley; brothers, Theron Price, Robert Price, Otis Price, John Price and Joseph Price. She is survived by her son, Robert D. Dempsey, Sr. and his wife Tess; Grandsons, Robert D. Dempsey, II and his wife Angela and Gregory P. Dempsey. Step Grandchildren, Christopher Bailey, Lindsey Bailey, Jenniffer Hunter and her husband, David; and step great granddaughter, Lauren; and nephew Harold P. Jones and his wife, Cherie, and family. Marcum, John C., age 86, of West Knoxville passed away Monday evening, September 24, 2001 at his home. He was retired from Rust Engineering. John was a lifelong farmer. Patterson, Mrs. Arrie Harris, age 89, of passed away Thursday, September 27, 2001 at Mountain Area Hospice in Asheville following a short illness. She was a native of Cherokee County, NC. She was the daughter of the late Bowman and Pearl Y. Harris. Mrs. Patterson was a former school teacher in the Cherokee County School System. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest M. Patterson; sisters, Mae H. Hawkins, Esther H. Foster and Marie H. Hawkins. Survived by sons; Charles K. Patterson of Waynesville and Robert M. Jim passed away Thursday evening, September 27, 2001 at Park West Medical Center. Onnie passed away Friday morning, September 28, 2001 at the Roane Co. Medical Center in Harriman. Jim was retired from Midland Steel in Cleveland, OH. He was a veteran of W. W. II serving in the U. S. Army. Onnie was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. Vaughn Sr. and Linnie Dovie Crisp Vaughn; brother, Fred Allen Vaughn; sister, Geneva Lee Vaughn Cruze. Dorothy is survived by her brother, James B. Ackerly, Theodore A. (Ted), age 77, of Greenville, NY, formerly of Stamford, CT, and Greenwich, CT, passed away of cardiac arrest on Saturday afternoon, September 29, 2001 at Park West Hospital in Knoxville, TN. Ted was retired from Connecticut Transit Company in Stamford. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the Army in the 150th Combat Engineers in England, France and Germany. Ted was preceded in death by his parents, George and Frances Ackerly. Survivors: son, Theodore A. Ackerly Jr. of Greenville, NY; sister, Dorothy Grisko of Farragut, TN; several nieces and nephews. Michael worked for Bill's Pools. Michael loved life. He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Delmar Bennett and grandfather, Earl C. Kaylor. Michael is survived by his wife of 10 years, Rebekah Bennett; daughter, Shiann Bennett; mother, Jill K. Wells, Robert Gene, age 86, of Farragut, formerly of Oak Ridge and Mt. View California, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at Shannondale Health Care Center. Gene was a member of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. He was a charter member of the United Church of Oak Ridge and the Lenoir City-Tellico Rotary Club. Gene was a member of Promise Keepers and Gideon International. He was among the first recruits for Oak Ridge, the first to move in and was co-founder of the 43 Club. Survivors: wife of 64 years, Virginia Mettetal Wells; daughters and sons-in-law, Emily and Jerry Vreeland of Knoxville, Carolyn and Dick Allen of Lawrenceville, GA; grandchildren, Leigh Davidson Seaman and husband Matt of Knoxville, TN, Patrick E. RAY, DORIS GWINN, age 77, of Knoxville passed away Wednesday morning October 3, 2001, at Parkwest Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Her passions included her family, music, wildflowers and the Smoky Mountains. After her diagnosis, Doris became extremely involved in helping others through cancer support groups on the Internet. She was also an avid square dancer, and helped with her husband to organize the Ten Mile Twirlers Square Dance Club. Doris was retired from McNutt Brown Service where she served as bookkeeper. Prior to that she owned her own secretarial service in West Knoxville. Doris was a member of Second Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by: her parents, Basil H. Gwinn and Grace Smith Gwinn; brothers Lawrence Gwinn, Charles Gwinn, and Ernest Gwinn. Survived by: husband of 49 years, Robert Bruce Ray; daughters, Roberta Ray of Seattle, WA, Mary Ruth Ray of Boston, MA; son, Bill Ray of Nashville; grandchildren, Lucia Saquic-Ray, Julian Saquic-Ray, William Matczynski; brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Dot Gwinn of Knoxville; sisters-in-law Mary Ruth Gwinn of Knoxville, Estella Gwinn of Dallas, TX, Virgie Bingham of Greensboro, NC, Lois Ray of Troy, NC, Sarah Ray Jones of Warner Robbins, GA; sons-in-law Armando Saquic Paxtor and Leonard Matczynski, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and countless friends. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday in the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel with Dr. Arnold Lovell officiating. Littlefield, Mary Rogers age 45 of Lenoir City passed away Thursday, October 4, 2001 at the U. T. Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer. She was of the Baptist Faith. Preceded in death by husband Verlin Littlefield; parents, Audley and Mae Rogers. Survived by son, Ray Littlefield of the home; sister, Pat Givens and husband, Alden of Knoxville; brothers, Bob Rogers and wife Marilyn of Knoxville, John Rogers and wife, Jenny of Seymour; special aunts, Mary Rogers, Pauline Fout, Anna Kearney and Helen Olson; uncles, Bob Danley and Chuck Danley; special niece and helper, Michelle Lundy and Bob Morris; nieces, Melissa Rogers and Emily Rogers; nephews, Jim Rogers, Bobby Rogers, Steve Rogers, Ben Rogers, David Rogers and Eli Rogers; special and trusted friend, Roby Moore and many other special friends who helped during her time of need. Survived by children, Paul Musgrove, Mike Musgrove, Lois Moss all of Lenoir City, Jerry Priddy of Chattanooga and Charles Ray Priddy of Cleveland; granddaughter, Sandra Moss of Lenoir City; grandsons, Eric Musgrove of Lenoir City, Brian Priddy, Mark Priddy both of Chattanooga and Brad Priddy of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews. Coley, Merle Edith Ellis Hendrix, age 91, of Lenoir City and Crossville passed away Friday morning, October 5, 2001 at her home in Lenoir City. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Lenoir City. Merle was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Lenoir City Chapter #188. Preceded in death by first husband, Cleo C. Hendrix Sr.; sons, Jerry Lynn Hendrix and Hobart Ray Hendrix. Survived by husband of 19 years, George Coley; children, Cleo C. Hendrix Jr., Fred Hendrix, Max Hendrix, and Patsy Babb all of Lenoir City; 15 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Sunday with funeral services to follow at 8 p.m. in the Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Hubbard officiating. Family and friends will gather at 11 a.m. Monday in the Lake View Cemetery for graveside services. Laughlin, David LeRoy, age 65, of Lenoir City, passed away Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. David was retired from ORNL after 36 1/2 years service. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eula Clark Laughlin; grandson, Bradley Clarke Lally. Survived by his wife of 48 years, Jo Ann Laughlin; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Bob Lally of Ellicott City, Md.; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Michelle Laughlin of Lenoir City, Gary and Ann Laughlin of Loudon; grandchildren, Brett, Kathryn and Brooke Lally, Daniel Laughlin, Chelsea and Tyler Laughlin; sisters, Betty Jo Laughlin, Nancy Foshee and Deola Amos all of Lenoir City. The family will receive friends from 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday at Hawkins Chapel with funeral services to follow at 3 p.m. with Rev. Charles Carpenter officiating.
