John Robert Brooks, 71, a retired businessman, died of cancer July 6 at Wood Village in Sweetwater, Tennessee. A former resident of Grosse Ile, Michigan, Mr. Brooks was living in Vonore, Tennessee for the last two years of his life. Mr. Brooks was born in Clarksburg, WV. He served for four years in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War, with most of that time spent in England. While there, Mr. Brooks met his future bride, Geri O’Leary. Upon returning to the United States, he attended Fairmont State College in Fairmont, WV and received his B.S. degree in accounting and business. After graduation from college Mr. Brooks began his business career with the Union Carbide Corporation in Indianapolis, IN. He left there in 1967 to become Vice President and Comptroller of Monroe Scrap Material in Monroe, MI. Later, he became the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Wyandotte Steel in Wyandotte, MI. Subsequently Mr. Brooks became the owner and President of Dix Scrap Material in Detroit, MI where he worked until his retirement in 1999. He was past President of the Wyandotte Rotary Club, past President of the Grosse Ile Athletic Booster Club, Committee Chair at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club and was active with Boy Scout Troop 1262 in Grosse Ile, MI. Mr. Brooks was an avid and lifelong outdoorsman. He was proud of his Life Endowment Membership in the National Rifle Association and was active with the Monroe Gun Club, the Michigan Rifle and Pistol Association, the Wayne County Sportsman Association, and was instrumental in the start of silhouette rifle shooting while living in Michigan. He enjoyed hunting small and big game and won numerous skeet and trap shooting awards. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic parish in Lenoir City, TN. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Gertrude Mary Brooks of Vonore, TN; four children, John Michael Brooks of Huntingtown, MD, Philip Edward Brooks of Carlsbad, CA, Ian Robert Brooks of Lake Berrington, IL, and Monica Marie Brooks of Phoenix, AZ; five grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City, TN. The body will lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. Father David Boettner will officate. Young, Carl Robert "Bob", age 77, of Knoxville, passed away at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, July 9th, following a brief illness. Survived by: daughter, DiAnne Young McMillin; grandchildren: Robert Woodson McMillin, Kenneth Young McMillin and Louise Callaway McMillin all of Knoxville; sister, Mary Young Maples of Lenoir City; brother and sister-in-law, Eddie and Loretta Young of Knoxville; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive. Mr. Young was well known around the Southeast for his cattle brokerage, being co-owner of Young Livestock Company of Knoxville, and owner of Plateau Livestock Exchange in Crossville. He was a member of Central Baptist Church of Bearden, and Board of Directors of First National Bank of Loudon County. Sherrod, Michael Thomas (Tech Sgt. U.S. A.F. Ret.), age 75, of Lenoir City, passed away Wednesday morning, July 10, 2002, at the Parkwest Medical Center following a short illness with lung cancer. Mike was retired from the United States Air Force after 23 years of service. He has worked with Ledbetter TV for the past 21 years. Mike was a faithful servant of Cornerstone Community Baptist Church where he taught the Young Adult Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Mildred Courtney Sherrod; brothers: Emerson, Andrew, Elwood and Glenn Sherrod. Mike is survived by his sister, Mildred Jenkins of Lenoir City; brothers: Huchiale (Buck) Sherrod of Lenoir City, James Sherrod and wife, Rosemarie of Hertford, NC, Charlie Sherrod and wife, Rula of St. Cloud, FL; several nieces and nephews. Brown, Audrey Davis, age 77, of Knoxville, formerly of Los Angeles, California, passed away on July 10, 2002, in Knoxville. Her husband, Byron J. Spurlock, Dorothy (Easter), age 75, of Knoxville, passed away on July 11. Survived by four sons, James (wife Bonnie), David, Donald, and Mark (wife Kelly), and one daughter Jayne Welch; nine grandchildren, Adam, Robert Lee, Christy Phillips, Analis, Markus, Dylan, Nicholas, Catherine, and Justin Welch; a great granddaughter, Mariah Sturevant; a brother, Lester Easter, an aunt, Edna Raby; several nephews and nieces; many friends and loved ones. Gregory, Larry Richard, age 58, of Farragut, TN, died Saturday morning July 20, 2002 at his home following a sudden illness. Larry was born in Nashville, TN on April 6, 1944. He graduated from MTSU University in 1968, and was a charter member of Sigma Chi MTSU Chapter. He served in the Army as a lieutenant from 1968 - 1970. Larry came to the Knoxville area in 1971 where he began his career at Bull Run Oil Company. Later he served as Vice President of Church Petroleum. For several years Larry worked in the hydraulic business before returning to the oil business. Larry was president of Central Florida Oil for four years and returned to serve as president of Harriman Oil and president of East Tennessee Transport Co. He was a member of St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church. Wicks, Wesley D. (Pete), age 66, of Farragut, died Monday evening July 22, 2002 at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center. Pete was an active and founding member of St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church. He was professor of Biochemistry at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville for 22 years. Pete is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy Wicks; sons, Stephen Wicks, wife Wokie and son, Lahai of Knoxville; Andrew Wicks, wife Amy and daughters, Katie and Emily of Charlottesville, VA; and Jamie Wicks of Orlando, FL. Thomas, Jonathan Eugene age 21 of Lenoir City, passed away suddenly, Wednesday, July 24, 2002. Jonathan worked for East Tennessee Precast. He attended Hensley Chapel Primitive Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and boating. McKinney, Randall A. (Randy) age 34 of Knoxville, TN, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2002, at St. Mary's Residential Hospice after a nine month battle with cancer. Randall was of the Christian Faith. He was a crane operator/inspector before his illness, and a member of Tennessee Valley Operating Engineers Local 917. Randy is survived by his children, Jordan and Alex McKinney, Leah and Jessica Jones all of Shreveport, LA; mother and step-father Lynn Dell and Mike Kimbrough of Chattanooga; father, George McKinney of Odessa, TX; brother, Mark McKinney of Knoxville; step-brother, Kevin Kimbrough of Knoxville; grandmother, Kathlyn B. (Nan-Nan) Davis of Concord; uncle and aunt Reed and Karen Davis of Concord; aunts Phyllis White of Odessa, TX, Beverly Terry and her husband, Robert of Texarkana, TX; and the Boring Families of Concord, and the McKinney Families of Texas and Arkansas. Dot and her husband, Ellis formerly operated Sharp Grocery in Loudon and were former members of Loudon United Methodist Church She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Sharp and her son, Lloyd Sharp along with several brothers and sisters. Passons, James Thomas (Jim), age 69, of Farragut, formerly of Sparta, died early Saturday morning July 27, 2002, at U. T. Hospital in Knoxville. Jim was a member and former Elder at Farragut church of Christ. He was a retired Pharmaceutical Representative with Bristol-Myers Squibb. Jim played football for SMU, Tennessee Tech and the Knoxville Bears. He was a graduate of Tennessee Tech and a veteran of the U. S. Army Signal Corps. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and family man. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Varina Mai Rawlston Passons. Survivors: wife of 48 years, Joan Womble Passons; daughters and sons-in-law, Sarah and Coley Woody of Loudon, Beth and Jeff Blevins of Knoxville, Amy and John Yander of Knoxville; grandchildren, Christine Blevins, Jacob Blevins, David Woody and Allison Yander; father, James Monroe Passons of Sparta; brothers and sisters-in-law, David and JoAnn Passons of Lenoir City, Bobby and Virginia Passons, Donald and Betty Passons all of Sparta; several nieces and nephews.
