Alan P. Graves, Sr. passed away in Knoxville, TN on July 28th, 2002 at the age of 82. He had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease. He was born June 12, 1920 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Alan H. and Ruth P. Graves. He attended Dubuque public schools and then went on to graduate with a B.S. in economics from the University of Chicago in 1942. In World War II, he served as an army personnel officer at Camp Beale, CA and attained the rank of Captain. Following the war, he began working at Priebe & Sons Poultry in Iowa City, Iowa. He was transferred to Concord, NC in 1950 to establish a poultry processing operation there. In 1961, he began work as a trust officer at Cabarrus Bank & Trust. He rose to the position of Senior VP & Trust Officer at Northwestern Bank, which acquired Cabarrus Bank & Trust. He became a member of the Cannon Foundation in 1977 and served as secretary of the Cannon Charitable Trust following his retirement from the bank in 1985. He was an Eagle Scout and a life-long Rotarian with over 51 years of perfect attendance. He was a Paul Harris Fellow. His wife, the former Catherine Kellam, died in 1996. Survivors include a daughter, Judith O'Leary and husband, Louis of Philadelphia, PA; a son Alan P. (Pete) Graves, Jr. and wife, Carolyn, of Knoxville, TN, a grandson Alan P. Graves III, 5 step-grandchildren, Tom and Rodney Floyd, and Karin, Daniel and David O'Leary, three step-great grandchildren; and a brother, Dr. John P. Graves, of Mason City, IA; A private memorial service will be held at a later date in Dubuque, IA, with burial at Linwood Cemetery. Taylor, Ethel E., age 99, of the Tellico Village, Loudon, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at the Loudon Health Care Center. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Lenoir City and former member of the Order of Eastern Star. Ethel enjoyed gardening and sewing. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence T. Taylor; father, T.B. Defoor, who was a member of the Confederate States of America, and mother, Matilda Smithers Defoor; three brothers, one sister and four half brothers and sisters. Ethel is survived by her son, Carl Taylor and his wife, Wanda of Tellico Village; grandchildren, Richard Tilton Taylor and his wife, Julie of Northbrook, IL, Peggy Smith and her husband, Frank; great grandchildren: Jason, Katie and Kelly Smith all of Raleigh, N.C.; several nieces and nephews also survive. AMOS, DWIGHT SMITH, SR., age 58, of Lenoir City, passed away at his home, Sunday August 4, 2002 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was an employee of Mitchell Manuals for 28 years. Paul formerly owned and operated Vaughn-Hesley Pharmacy in Lockland, Ohio. He was active in church and the Woodworking Club in Tellico Village. He loved to golf, boat, enjoyed life and his friends. She worked in the cosmetic department at Miller's department store for many years and retired from Long's Drug Store. Emma Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn L. Albright, Paul Franklin, age 91, of Farragut, TN, formerly of Whiting, N.J., went to be with Jesus early Wednesday morning, August 14, 2002, at NHC Cavett Hill. Paul was born in Reading, PA and was a graduate of Albright College and the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Whiting Bible Church in Whiting, N.J. Paul was retired from Ziegler Chemical and was a member of the Institute of Chemists. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, May Albright; brothers, John Ruben Albright and Charles Albright. Keith, Anna Mae Gaston, age 94, of Athens formerly of Knoxville, Lenoir City and Chattanooga, passed away Monday, August 12, 2002 at Morning Point of Athens. She was a charter member of The Lord's Chapel. She was preceded in death by husband, Herbert B. Keith, Sr. Survived by sons, Herbert B. Keith, Jr. of Newnan, GA and James D. JENKINS, FRANCES ELIZABETH RUSSELL, age 88, of Concord, departed this life on August 15, 2002. She was born on October 13, 1913 in Greene County to William Finley Russell and Silence Anna Reese. She was a descendant of some of Tennessee's oldest pioneer families and joined First Families of Tennessee in honor of her great-great-great grandfather Col. Valentine Sevier and his father, Valentine Sevier, the Immigrant. The Russell family moved to Concord from Greeneville on the train in 1920. She attended the Concord School and after a school bus began picking up the children, she went to the Farragut Schools where she graduated as salutatorian of her senior class. She helped pay her way through Hiwassee College during the Depression by ironing shirts and managing the swimming pool. Frances began her teaching career at Farragut Elementary School and, after rearing her daughters, returned to teaching at Thackston School where she served as principal before retiring. She was a member of the West Emory Presbyterian Church and once served as an Elder and Sunday School teacher. Gardening, bird watching, reading, cooking good food, watching basketball games, and loving her canine grandchildren were some of her favorite things. She had great respect for Mother Nature. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, John Bryant Jenkins, her parents and 6 of her siblings including Jennie, John, Lois, Hugh, Tom, and Jack. Survivors include three daughters: Judy Jenkins of Concord, Lisa Huber and husband Jacob of Baltimore, MD and Geetia Jenkins of Concord. Brother Bill Russell and wife Ruth of Warner Robins, GA., several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and cousins. Special longtime friends Bess Marley Roberts, Elizabeth Johnson, Ursa Donovan, and Marjorie Bartless. McMahan, William Carson, age 89, of Loudon, passed away Friday, August 16, 2002 at his home. He was a member and deacon of Pine Top Primitive Baptist Church. He was retired from Oak Ridge, K-25 Plant after 29 years service. Carson was a longtime farmer. He loved his family and his church family. He was preceded in death by wife, Josephine Cass McMahan; father, Jeff McMahan; mother, Addie Mae Cagley; son, Johnny Weldon McMahan; daughter, Dorothy Alma VanStory; brothers, Tom, Earl and Charlie Cagley; several other step-brothers and step-sisters; son-in-law, Tom Goodman; and daughter-in-law, Pamela Jean McMahan. Voiles, Imogene Babb, age 69, of Cave Creek Community, Roane Co., passed away Sunday, August 18, 2002 at the Loudon Health Care Center. She was a member of Cave Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Imogene was a former employee of the Charles H Bacon Hosiery Mill and a member of the Election Commission. She was preceded in death by husband, Lewis Earl (Motor) Voiles; parents, Luther and Leanna Babb. Survived by sons, Eugene Voiles and Wayne Voiles both of the home; 2 grandchildren, Robby and Ryan; brothers, Roy Babb of Cave Creek Community and Eugene Babb of High Point, N.C.; sister, Frances Babb Estes of Pine Grove Community; several nieces and nephews. Hensley, Roger Dale, age 33, of Knoxville, TN, formerly of Unicoi, TN, passed away suddenly Sunday afternoon, August 18, 2002 in a motorcycle accident. Dale's organs were donated so that others may live. He was born in Asheville, NC., was a graduate of Unicoi County High School Class of 1986, and a graduate of East Tennessee State University Class of 1992. Dale was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church. He was an employee of Wackenhut-Oak Ridge Team\NCI Information Systems. Dale was a member of the Oak Ridge Flyers, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and the National Rifle Association. He held a private pilots license and was a HAM radio operator. He served God with great joy by writing, singing and playing contemporary Christian music. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James J. and Mary Ogle Hensley, Ben and Sallie Tipton; niece, Amanda Marie Hensley. Survivors: wife, Angela Day Hensley; parents, Eugene and Hassie Tipton Hensley; brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Teresa Hensley, Danny and Lori Hensley all of Unicoi; niece and nephews, Joshua, Savannah, Cory and Jeremy Hensley all of Unicoi; mother-in-law, and father-in-law, Brenda and Millard Day of Lenoir City; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Melinda and Chris Webster of Knoxville. Moore, James C., age 82, of Farragut, passed away Tuesday afternoon, August 20, 2002 at Blount Memorial Hospital. Jim was a faithful deacon and leader at First Baptist Church Concord for nearly 40 years until his health began to fail. He also served FBC Concord as Sunday School Superintendent, and on numerous Building Committees. Jim served as a B-17 pilot with the 379th Bomb Group, Kimbolton England, in WWII and was discharged a captain from the United States Air Force Reserve. He retired from Union Carbide K-25 plant in 1981 with 36 years of service. Throughout life, he was an avid sportsman enjoying basketball, baseball, hunting and dog training. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles E. and Willie Mae Swaggerty Moore and brother, Burl H. Moore. Survivors: Wife of 57 years, Frances Hitch Moore; sons and daughters-in-law, James A. (Tony) and Karen Moore of Claxton, Bradley S. and Cathy Moore of Knoxville; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Joe Ellsworth of Titusville, FL; five grandchildren, Rachel and Rebecca Moore, Josh, Laura and Joseph Ellsworth; step-grandchild, Rusty Shinpaugh; sister-in-law, Ruth Moore of Sistersville, WVA; and nephews Stan and Tim Moore. Hensley, Clarence W., age 75, of Lenoir City, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at Park West Medical Center. He was a member of Paw Paw Plains Baptist Church. Clarence was a retired foreman from Miller's Department Store. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He was preceded in death by parents, Hamp and Geneva Hensley. Survived by his wife of 48 years, Clara Coley Hensley; daughter, Karen Galloway of Oak Ridge; grandchildren, Courtney and Erin Galloway and Will Graham all of Oak Ridge; brother, Earl Hensley of Lenoir City. Sarten, Herbert Dexter, age 73, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2002 at his home in Lenoir City after a courageous battle with cancer. Herbert was a 20 year Air Force Veteran who served in Vietnam. He was a deacon emeritus and Senior Adult Men's Sunday School teacher at Kingston Pike Baptist Church. He served as a civil engineer in the Air Force and later worked as a plumber. Herbert loved his Lord, he loved his family, and he loved his fellow man. He was preceded in death by parents, Joseph Lee Sarten and Laura Currier Sarten; and brother, Joe Curtis Sarten. Survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Lillian Johnson Sarten; daughter, Kathy Brown and husband, Tracy of Oak Ridge, daughter, Carolyn Bible and husband, Walter of Lenoir City; son, Herbert Sarten and wife, Missy of Lenoir City; grandchildren, Trey and John Sarten, Caitlyn Bible, and Leah and Aaron Brown; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roy and Opal Sarten of Harriman and Paul and Gail Sarten of Santa Maria, CA; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Jack Green of Seymour, Lucille and the late Raymond Collins of Harriman, Loretta and B.
