Long, Jackson Raymond, age 21, of Lenoir City, passed away suddenly Sunday morning, December 8, 2002. Jackson was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. He graduated from Lenoir City High School in 2000. He was employed by H & H Trucking. Jackson was an avid fisherman and loved hot rods. He was proud of his American Indian Heritage and was member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Lake Traverse Reservation in Sisseton, South Dakota. Preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Hampson; grandparents, Clifford Raymond and Ruby Louise Moore Long. Survived by son, Logan Dakota Sullivan Long; parents, Jimmy and Vanessa Long of Lenoir City; sisters, Kathy Watson and husband, Billy of Athens, Jennifer Stacey of Cleveland of; brothers, Michael Herron and wife, Brianne of Chattanooga, Jimmy Jr. Bigham and wife, Mandy of Cleveland; grandparents, Jack and Cisti Everett of Knoxville; nieces, Amber and Alana; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Abouelata, Mohamed Fathi, age 67, of Boone, North Carolina, formerly of Falls Church, VA and Rochester, NY, passed away Monday evening December 9, 2002 in Knoxville, TN Mohamed came to the University of Tennessee in 1960 to study mathematics and nuclear physics. He held a professorship at Rochester Institute of Technology. His last position before retiring was with the Defense Mapping Agency in Washington, DC. Mohamed was a loving gentle father, grandfather and friend who will be sorely missed. He was the author of numerous publications and books. Survivors: son and daughter-in-law, Harvey and Kristin Abouelata of Knoxville, TN and their daughters, Sophia and Natalie; companion of 14 years, Tove Holmer of Boone, NC and her children, Hans Holmer and Nina Wolf both of Washington, DC; brother, Abdul Aziz Abouelata of Cairo and other extended family in Egypt; mother of his son, Wilma Schramm of Loudon, TN. Lawhon, Iva Sue Littleton Cagley, age 66, of Winchester, TN formerly of Lenoir City, passed away to be with her Lord on Wednesday, December 11, 2002. Iva Sue was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by father, Frank Littleton; mother, Mollie Littleton; sister, Jewel Howard; and daughter, Charlene Cagley. Black, Gerald L. (Blackie), age 60, of Knoxville, formerly of Niota, went to be with the Lord suddenly Wednesday evening December 11, 2002 at his home. Blackie had served in the U S Navy on the USS Cole in 1960. He was an employee of A Plus Mobile Homes in Knoxville. Blackie was an avid golfer. He was preceded in death by his father, Hayden Black. Lyell, B. Donald (Don) of Knoxville, formerly of Johnson City, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center. Don was a very active member of Karns Church of Christ and was formerly very active at the Central Church of Christ in Johnson City. He was a Mason, Shriner and member of the Johnson City Metro Lion's Club. Don was retired from American Water Heater Corp. in Johnson City. He was an avid golfer, a master craftsman and a loving husband, father and grandfather. Survivors: wife of 43 years, Shirley Cunningham Lyell; daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Jim DeSilvey of Greenwood, IN; sons and daughters-in-law, Todd and Mary Lyell of Farragut, Rob and Kristina Lyell of Karns; grandchildren, Mark, Thomas and Jordan DeSilvey, Forrest, Haley and Gavin Lyell; several nieces and nephews. Rene' Sonnenfeldt born February 15, 1925 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, died Thursday December 12, 2002 at home in Loudon, TN. He was a naturalized citizen of the United States of America and a graduate of the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands with a degree in chemistry. As a World War II concentration camp survivor, he was awarded the Dutch Freedom Medal for his involvement with the Dutch Underground Movement during the war. Retired from Occidental Petroleum and Technique, Inc. Mr. Sonnenfeldt was a fellow of the American Electroplaters Society, treasurer of the International Branch of the AESF, a Notary Republic at Large and a licensed real estate agent in the state of Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his mother Gertrude and father Moses both of the Netherlands. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Tina Sonnenfeldt of Loudon, TN, his sons Maurice Sonnenfeldt of Duluth, Ga., Marcel Sonnenfeldt of Roswell, Ga. and Marty Sonnenfeldt of Knoxville, TN Daughters-in-law Janie Sonnenfeldt, Doreen Sonnenfeldt and Betty Sonnenfeldt. Pilcher, Meta Jane, age 77, of Knoxville, formerly of Wilmington, DE, and Hilton Head, SC, passed away Saturday evening December 14, 2002 at Park West Hospital. Meta was currently a member of Welcome Wagon, Omni Women's Club and Newcomer's Club. She was an avid bridge player. Meta had devoted much of her time to the South Carolina Chapter for Down Syndrome and was very involved in South Carolina Special Olympics. While residing in Wilmington, she was very involved with Ronald McDonald House. Meta was a very devoted friend and mother whose memory will be cherished. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Pilcher. Lay, Ronald (Ron), age 64, of Knoxville, passed away Saturday morning December 14, 2002 at his home. Ron was of the Baptist faith. He was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force with 8 years of active duty and 25 years of service with the Air National Guard 134th Refueling Group. Ron was retired from the City of Knoxville with 37 years of service in the Department of Engineering. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert W. Lay; brother-in-law, Dan Headrick. Haskins, Dr. Ralph W., retired professor of history at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, passed away on Saturday December 14, 2002, after a long illness. A native of Oklahoma, Dr. Haskins attended Northeastern State Teachers College (now Northeastern State University), where he received a B.A. degree and met his wife, Florence Brady. He received an M.A. degree at the University of Oklahoma and his Ph.D. degree at the University of California at Berkley. Besides teaching the History of the South, his specialty, he also taught Latin American History. He leaves behind a host of students who profited from his dynamic lectures, for his concern was always his students Dr. Haskins and his colleague, the late LeRoy Gray, collected and edited the writings of President Andrew Johnson. At a ceremony in the White House, President Lyndon Johnson received the first copy of the publication. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence and his son, Jim Haskins. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel with the family receiving friends following the service. Proaps, Harold E. (Frosty), age 78, of Lenoir City, passed away Monday, December 16, 2002 at the Park West Medical Center. He was of the Baptist faith. Frosty served during W. W. II in the U. S. Marine Corp. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being shot in the Pacific Islands. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion. He was employed for over 30 years at Moore Drug Co. which later became Atchley’s Drug Store. Frosty retired from the City of Lenoir City where he was Treasurer Recorder for 20 years. He was a past member of the Lenoir City Civitan Club. Preceded in death by infant daughter; parents, William and Belle England Proaps; brothers, Raymond, Paul and Wayne; an infant brother and sister. Survived by devoted wife of 50 years, Alyce Shubert Proaps; children, Army Maj. Ret. Bessie was a charter member and was the oldest member of Kingston Pike Missionary Baptist Church. She was retired after 32 years service from Oak Ridge, Y-12 Plant. She retired as a plant nurse from Allied Chemical. She then owned and operated Gordon's Deli. Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Pratt, Marjorie (Marnie), age 79, of Farragut, formerly of Nashville, passed away Tuesday evening, December 24, 2002 at her home with all of her family at her side. Marjorie was a member of Laurel Church of Christ in Knoxville. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Survivors: husband of 59 years, Doug Pratt; daughters, LaRue Kalthoff and husband Tim, Pam Lewis; grandchildren, Matthew, Shannon, Jeffrey and Judson Kalthoff, Andrew, Craig and Blake Lewis; great grand daughter, Camilla LaRue Kalthoff ; brothers and sisters-in-law, Teddy and Betty Lowry of Birmingham, AL, Don and Marji Lowry of Huntsville, AL; several nieces and nephews. McConkey, Gordon R., age 79, of Lenoir City, passed away December 24, 2002 in Sarasota, Florida. He was born June 14,1923 in Lenoir City, Tennessee. Gordon was a member Calvary Baptist Church, Avery Masonic Lodge #593 F&AM, the International Brotherhood and Allied Trades for 55 years and he served his country in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Etta; daughter, Gordon Ann White of Sarasota, Florida; son, James D. McConkey of Cartersville, Georgia; four grandchildren, five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 11a.m.-12 noon Saturday at Click Funeral Home in Lenoir City. Family and friends will then proceed to the Lakeview Cemetery for graveside services with Rev. Ogg, Wendall Wayne, son of Ernest R. and Larue Petty Ogg, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, after a long illness. The Memorial Service will be at First Baptist Church of Concord on Saturday January 4th beginning at 2:30 p.m. Wendall, age 77, was a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He demonstrated through out his life the love of Jesus. Wendall served in the Navy in World War II and followed that with a degree in Physics from Carson Newman College. He worked in the field of health physics through out his career in Oak Ridge, culminating his career as a nuclear physicist, traveling the world extensively for the I.A.E.A., setting up and inspecting the safe handling of radioactive materials throughout the world. In addition to a deep love of the Lord, and a strong work ethic, Wendall was fluent in six languages. Wherever Wendall traveled he learned the language and helped to spread the Word of God. Wendall won the Golden Gloves in his weight division in 1941. He was part of an exploration in 1949 searching for Noah's Ark on Mt. Ararat in his early twenties. He is survived by his wife, Alice Hollyfield Ogg, of Knoxville, children, Neil Justin Ogg, Ph.D. of Clemson, S.C., Alice Elaine Gilmartin of Winter Springs, Fl., and Mary Jane Fisher of Knoxville. He is survived by his sister Barbara Webster Minton, two brothers J. C. and Ernie Ogg and eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Burger, Betty Jane, age 82, of Tellico Village Community, Loudon, TN formerly of Morton and Naperville, Ill. passed away Saturday, December 28, 2002. She attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill. She was a member of Tellico Village Community Church. Betty was founder and first president of Ladies Golf Association at Tellico Village. She was a PEO member. Betty was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter in Morton. Preceded in death by parents, William and Anna Rapp. Survived by husband of 59 years, W. E. (Bud) Burger, who was the head coach at North Central College form 1956-1968; children: Carole Heiser and husband, Don of Knoxville, TN, Tom Burger and wife, Cindy of Cumming, Ga.; grandchildren, Craig Heiser and wife, Brooks and their daughter Virginia, Jill and Leslie Heiser, Shawn and Nicole Burger; great granddaughter, Virginia Heiser; brother, Don Rapp and wife, Patsy of Tallahassee, Fl; nephews, Darryl and Murray Rapp. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2002 at Tellico Village Community Church with Rev. Bobo, Elsie Lou Rowles, age 78, of Lenoir City, passed away Monday, December 30,2002 at her home. She was a member of Lenoir City Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Order of Eastern Star Athens, Ohio Chapter. Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett and Jesse Hostetter Rowles; sister, Jesse Marie Tom and son, Michael Howard Bobo. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Howard Bobo; daughters: Cinda Beeler and husband, Paul of Lenoir City, Judith McPherson and husband, Randy of Kingston and Barbara Badger of Maryville; grandchildren: Hilary and Jared McPherson, Kristen and Michael Badger; sister, Ann Ruth of Pittsburgh, PA; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, January 2, followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. in the Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating.
