Ford L. Burns
Fred L. Burns, 55, of Springfield, died at Veteran’s Hospital in Murfreesboro Nov. 8, 2003.
Memorial services were held Thursday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. at Community Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Townsend officiating.
He was the second of six children born to the late Rosetta Brooks Burns and Ford Lewis Burns Sr.
Ford professed a hope in Christ at an early age at True Vine Baptist Church in Indiana. Later in life he joined Community Baptist Church in Springfield.
Ford joined the United States Army at the age of 17. He did two tours in the Vietnam War.
He is preceded in death a sister, Sheila Collier.
Survivors include a very special aunt, Vara D. Cole of Springfield; three sisters; two brothers-in-law, Pauletta (James) Benford of Clarksville, Linda Joseph, Anita Gordon of Indianapolis, Ind. and Ray Collier of Springfield; two brothers, Donnie R. Burns of Aurora, Colo., and Robert Kendrick of Toledo, Ohio; an aunt, Gale Brooks of Indianapolis, Ind.; two uncles, Lewis Brooks of Cleveland, Ohio and Clyde Brooks of Washington, D.C.; four nieces; five nephews; and a host of friends.

Dottie Ruth Grubbs
Dottie Ruth Grubbs, 80, of Calhoun, and formerly of Robertson County, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Bradley Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Grubbs and Pastor David Price officiating.
The interment followed in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Grubbs was born May 29, 1923, in Robertson County, to the late James and Corrine Bracey Cook.
She was a devoted servant of the Lord and was affectionately known as “Gran-Gran” to all who knew and loved her.
She was a member of Shenandoah Baptist Church, where she was the organist for the last nine years.
She was a DAR Medalist and has used her talents for the Lord for 60 years as an organist and pianist.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Rev. Loy Cook.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Bernice Edward Grubbs of Calhoun; sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Diana Grubbs of Hendersonville, Ray and Kay Grubbs of Springfield, Steve and Ruth Grubbs of Calhoun; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and O.L. Gilley of Springfield; brother and sister-in-law, Gene and June Cook of Greenbrier; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren.

Wayne Ellis
Wayne Ellis, 64, of Springfield, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at St. Thomas Hospital.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Bro. Bob Filson and Rev. J.J. Wheelbarger officiating.
The interment followed in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mr. Ellis was born Oct. 2, 1939, in Robertson County, to the late William Bryan and Hattie Marie Haynes Ellis.
He was a retired school teacher with 32 years of service, and a retired meat cutter.
He was a member of Owens Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lynda Rosson Ellis of Springfield; sons and daughter-in-law, Perry and Jane Ellis of Mansfield, Mass. And Ben Ellis of Springfield; a daughter and son-in-law, Page and Steve Mayo of Kingsport; step-sons, Clay Burchett and wife, Sharon of White House, and Chris Burchett and wife, Marlene of Cross Plains; brother and sister-in-law, William H. and Agnes Ellis of Clarksville; grandchildren, Eden Ellis, Jacob Mayo, Laura Ellis, Rebekah Burchett, Gage Burchett, and Kinsey Burchett, Caelia Burchett.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice, Cross Plains City Park Fund, or to the East Robertson High School Science Dept.

Michael Lee Thomas
Michael Lee Thomas, 41, of Springfield, died Nov. 22, 2003, at his home.
His remains are at the Robertson County Funeral Home where services will be conducted Wednesday (today), Nov. 26 at 1 p.m. with interment to follow in Palestine Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday until the hour of service.
Members of the 2003 Springfield High School football team and their head coach, Jon Offutt will serve as pallbearers.
He was born Jan. 18, 1962, in Robertson County, to George and Betty Fryer Thomas of Springfield.
He was in the process of achieving his life-long dream of becoming a school teacher, while attending Austin Peay State University.
He was a member of Palestine United Methodist Church. He was a strong supporter of Springfield High School Football, having played for as well as coached the Yellow Jackets.
He had coached the Springfield High Softball team and many youth softball, baseball, soccer and basketball teams over the years.
Mr. Thomas owned and operated Uptown Motors for over 20 years and was a veteran of the National Guard and served on active duty through the National Guard for his country.
He is preceded in death by his brother, George Edward Thomas Jr.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Teresa Jackson Thomas; a son, Michael Lee Thomas Jr.; daughters, Melody Ann Thomas and Jennifer Leigh Thomas, all of Springfield; a brother, Terry W. Thomas of Cross Plains; and a sister, Sherry Thaxton of Springfield.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Springfield High School football team.

Mattie Watkins
Mattie Watkins, 92, of Cedar Hill, died Nov. 16, 2003, at Elmhurst Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Washington officiating.
Burial followed at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 21 at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include three nieces, Helen Northington, Pauline Atkins of Nashville, and Lillian Northington of Indiania; two nephews, Garfield Bowen and Charles Bowen, both of Springfield; two great-nephews, Charles Watkins and Greg Watkins, both of Springfield; a great-niece, Karen Watkins of Springfield; a devoted niece, Elizabeth Morrow of Springfield; other loving nieces and nephews; the family of the late Dr. and Mrs. R.H. Elder.

Elsie Lou England
Elsie Lou England, 85, of Springfield, died at her home Monday, Nov. 24, 2003.
Funeral services will be conducted (today) Wednesday, Nov. 26 at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield with Rev. Robert E. Carroll officiating.
Interment will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery.
Mrs. England was a homemaker.
She was born to the late John and Nolie Graves Minnis in Robertson County July 9, 1918.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James H. England.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Douglas Head of White House, Connie and Larry Gibbs of Hermitage; two sisters, Evelyn Harper and Earlene Holman, both of Springfield; four grandchildren, Sonja Leonard, Brandon Cherry, Ricky Head and David Head; five great-grandchildren, Samantha Head, Savannah Head, Tyler Head, Jessica Head and Chelsea Head.
Pallbearers will be Brandon Cherry, Ricky Head, David Head, Gary Leonard, Scott Carroll, Ken Hinkle, and Wendell Jones.
