Viola Smith
Bertha Viola Smith, 80, of Springfield, died Oct. 28, 2003, at NorthCrest Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 1204 Cheatham St., Springfield, with Rev. Martin P. Winslow officiating.
Burial followed at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Cedar Hill.
She was born Nov. 29, 1922, in Terre Haute, Ind., to the late John N. Harrison and Overa Hutchson.
She attended First Baptist Church, Springfield, under the pastorship of Rev. Martin P. Winslow for over 20 years.
She was married to D.C. Smith who preceded her in death.
Survivors include her only sister, Virgile M. Turnley; daughter, Arletta Gardner; 10 grandchildren, nephews and nieces; and a host of great-grandchildren.

Joe C. Herring
Joe C. Herring, 77, of Springfield died Nov. 2, 2003, at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.
Remains are at Serenity Funeral Home. Visitation will begin Wednesday (today) from 1 to 6 p.m. with family present from 6 to 7 p.m.
The funeral will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Serenity Funeral Home with Rev. George Clemmon Sr. officiating.
Burial will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery in Springfield.
He was born Oct. 27, 1926, to the late Kelly and Mattie Woodard Herring in Robertson County.
He professed a hope in Christ at an early age and united with Mt. Olive Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his son, Redell Herring, two brothers, James and Charlie Herring, four sisters, Georgia Dotson, Dorothy Crocker, Vernice Herring and Esther Holland.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald (Christine) and Larry (Gina) Herring; a brother, George (Frances) Herring of Springfield; four sisters, Georgia Mae Morton of Springfield, Willie C. Day, Hilda Louise Herring and Nora Jenkins, all of Cleveland, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces, Brenda Jenkins and Melony Herring; a host of other nieces, nephews and friends.

Edna Orand Poole
Edna Orand Poole, 87, of Norwalk, Calif., formerly of Robertson County, died Oct. 29, 2003, after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Nov. 6 in Norwalk, Calif.
Burial will follow Friday morning in Rose Hills Gardens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Poole, a grandson, Ron Poole, daughter-in-law, Linda Poole and son-in-law, Chuck Adams.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Poole and wife, Lynne, Jack Poole and wife, Cathy; two daughters, Faye Adams and Linda Sue George and husband, Bob; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie O. Holman of Springfield; a sister-in-law, Annis O. Herring of Athens, Ga.
William Lesley Murphy
William Lesley “Bill” Murphy, 72, of Springfield, and formerly of Waverly, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Centennial Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Bro. David Coulter officiating.
The interment will follow in Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Murphy was born July 13, 1931, in Cheatham County to the late John B. and Mai Ella Yeargin Murphy.
He was a retired salesman and a Baptist.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Coulter Murphy; daughters, Pam Arnold and Gayle Elaine Carlaw; a step-son, Danny Darnell; brothers, Charles and Dan Murphy; sisters, Marie Garland, Jean Smith, Velma Murphy and Ann Graves; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Luther Osborne
Luther Osborne, 78, of Greenbrier, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Dr. Donnie Bryant and Brother Gary Dillard officiating.
Interment followed in Memorial Gardens.
He was born Dec. 11, 1924, in Livingston, to the late Henry and Cassie Matherly Osborne.
He is a retired ironworker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
He is also preceded in death by brothers, Carmany, Richard and Clifford Osborne and a sister, Estell Carter.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Osborne of Greenbrier; a son, Troy Osborne of Nashville; a daughter, Teresa Robertson of Springfield; brothers, Louis Tharp of Jesup, Ga., Jim Osborne of Ridgetop and Melvin Matherly of Greenbrier; a sister, Mary Lou Baker of North Carolina; grandchildren, Devan, Chris, Brandon, Angela and Kerrie Robertson; three great-grandchildren.

Estelle Ridge
Estelle Gragg Ridge, 87, of Greenbrier, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Dr. Farris Moore officiating.
Interment followed in Mt. Sharon Cemetery.
She was born June 15, 1916, in Overton County to the late Charlie C. and Verta Nolen Gragg.
Mrs. Ridge worked at the Springfield Woolen Mill when it was in operation and was a member of Woodland Street United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband William “Bill” Ridge and a son, Donald Ridge.
Survivors include a son, Larry Wayne Ridge of Greenbrier; a brother, Billy Gragg of Springfield; grandchildren, Bill Ridge and Burtis Ridge; two great-grandchildren.

Billy Mac Martin
Billy Mac Martin, 72, of Springfield, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at Beverly Health Care.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28 in the Oakhurst Chapel of Robertson County Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Hinkle and Dr. Farris Moore officiating.
Interment followed in Memorial Gardens.
He was born May 30, 1931, in Springfield to the late Ed C. and Nellie Wooten Martin.
He was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church, a retired meter reader for CEMC and an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Joni M. Martin.
Survivors include his wife, Laferne Belt Martin of Springfield; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Kim Martin; daughter, Jana Martin of Goodlettsville; brother, James E. Martin of Springfield; grandchildren, Jackie Rawls, Ryan and Greg Martin.
