Kenneth Eugene Greene
Kenneth Eugene Greene, 66, died in Springfield Jan. 27, 2003.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. at South Haven Baptist Church with Dr. Frank Gagliano officiating.
Interment followed in Memorial Gardens in Springfield.
Mr. Greene was born on April 4, 1936, in Charleston, W.Va.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Hannon W. and Lula New Greene, and a brother, Wade Greene.
He is survived by his wife, Helen C. Hite Greene of Springfield; sons, Kenneth W. (Sandy) Greene of Circleville, Ohio, Gregory A. (Debbie) Greene of Indianapolis, Mickey Lee (Katrina) Greene of Columbia; daughters, Robin L. (Max T.) Barnes of Hendersonville, and Teresa Lee of Greenbrier; sisters, Ninevah Watkins and Joe Evelyn Boyer, both of Petersburg, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth W. Greene, Greg A. Greene, Mickey Lee, Max T. Barnes, Tom E. Boyer, Danny Boyer, Bobby Overby, Dan Leedy and Gaines Eggers.

E. Ray Walker
E. Ray Walker, 82, died Jan. 22, 2003.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at 11 a.m. in Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield with Bro. Larry B. Pinson officiating.
Interment followed in the Wilson Cemetery in Pleasant View.
He was born in Robertson County Jan. 26, 1920.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Marion and Mattie Elizabeth Gower Walker, a brother, Dalton Walker, a sister, Sue Walker.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Walker of Pleasant View; sons, Eddie Ray (Joyce) Walker of Pleasant View and John W. (Patty) Walker of Springfield; brothers, John Miller Walker of Cheatham County, Marvin G. Walker of Coopertown; four grandchildren, John Walker of Benton, Ky., Michael Waler of Springfield, Eric Walker of Fayetteville, Ark., Heather Walker Gupton of Pleasant View.
Pallbearers were Gilford D. Walker, Kenneth D. Walker, Roy L. Walker, Keith Walker, Terry C. Walker, Bruce Walker, Bud Milliken and Jerry Carney.

Samuel Boyd Smith
Dr. Samuel Boyd Smith, who earned his doctorate at Vanderbilt University in 1961, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center at the age of 73 after suffering a brain hemorrhage.
Memorial services for Samuel Boyd Smith, whose passion for history distinguished his work as a teacher and scholar, were held at Belmont United Methodist Church Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at 3 p.m.
Sharing in the service were Rev. John Collett, Senior Minister at Belmont, Linda Johnson and Bishop Joe E. Pennel Jr. Also speaking were John Egerton, a close friend and the Smith sons, David, Mark and Stephen.
Burial was Monday, January 20, 2003, at Red River Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. John Collett officiating.
The formally retired but still active professor of history at Tennessee State University had served his native state since 1964, first as director of the Tennessee State Library and Archives, then as editor of the Andrew Jackson Papers, and subsequently as a professor of Tennessee history at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and at TSU, whose faculty he joined in 1979.
Dr. Smith’s most notable scholarly contributions were Tennessee History: A Bibliography, published in 1974, and Volume I of The Andrew Jackson Papers, published in 1980. The bibliography, since revised and updated, remains the definitive reference work on Tennessee's past. The Jackson Papers project continues at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
Dr. Smith was born in Adams, Tenn., Oct. 23, 1929. His father, Carl S. Smith, was a rural mail carrier and Methodist preacher. His mother, Annie Tolleson Smith, a farmer’s daughter, was a homemaker renowned for her cooking and hospitality.
He went through the public schools of Robertson County. He attended Bell School in Adams and graduated from Springfield High School. He attended Milligan College in Greeneville, Tenn., and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville before joining the Air Force in 1950. Most of his four-year tour of duty was spent in Europe.
Upon his return to Tennessee, he enrolled at George Peabody College in Nashville and completed his bachelor’s degree there in 1956.
In September of that year, he entered Vanderbilt University to study for a doctorate in history, and three months later, on Dec. 18, he married Martha Sue Fitzsimmons, a Peabody student from Paris, Tenn.
After earning his doctorate, Dr. Smith moved with his family to Tampa, where he joined the faculty at the University of South Florida. In 1964, he returned to Nashville to become Tennessee’s librarian and archivist, and chairman of the Tennessee Historical Commission.
Returning to the classroom in 1969, Dr. Smith devoted three decades to full-time teaching and scholarship at UT and TSU. For all of his accomplishments as an administrator and editor, it was his passion for teaching and learning that endeared him to a generation of students.
As members of Belmont United Methodist Church since 1964, he and his wife have been leaders.
Survivors include his wife, his sons: David Fitzsimmons Smith (Caroline) of Atlanta, Mark Tolleson Smith (Suzanne) of Nashville and Stephen Boyd Smith (Jodi) of Montana and six grandchildren, Sarah Eleanor Fitzsimmons Smith, Samuel Boyd Smith II, Robert Van Cleave Smith, Claire Rhodes Smith, Elise Tolleson Smith and Logan Polk Smith.
Dr. Smith was very family oriented and often visited his aunt and uncle, Maurice and Melba Tolleson and cousins in Adams
and Springfield.
He maintained a close connection with his high school friends as well as his friends in the Adams community.

Annie Lee Choate Coleman
Annie Lee Choate Coleman, 92, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at NorthCrest Medical Center.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Jan. 17, at Austin & Bell Funeral Home with Bro. Frank Evans officiating.
Interment followed in Oakland Cemetery.
Mrs. Coleman was born in Earlington, Ky., July 4, 1910, to Belve and Mildred Ann Bridges Choate.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husbands, Albert Randolph, Roy Coleman, and Jack Krisle, two brothers, Robert and Fletcher Choate, both of Kentucky.
She is survived by a son, Joseph L. (Joe) Randolph and wife, Betty of Joelton; a grandson, Joseph L. (Buddy) Randolph II and wife, Debbie of Huntsville, Ala., and a great-grandson, Joseph L. (Joe) Randolph III of Huntsville, Ala.; and a sister, Pauline Cartwright of Madisonville, Ky.

Wanda Gail Traughber
Wanda Gail Traughber died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Baptist Hospital.
Funeral services were conducted 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 at Austin & Bell Funeral Home with Bro. Floyd Reynolds officiating.
Interment followed in Memorial Gardens.
She was born April 3, 1954, to Billy Charles and Marjorie Marie Johnson Durham of Greenbrier.
In addition, to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Randy Traughber; sons, Billy Dale Paulus of Springfield; daughters, Angela Dawn Denton, Tanya Marie Traughber, Sherri Renee (David) Powell, all of Springfield; and a grandson, Anighya Heath Crocker.

Russell Glen Byrum
Russell Glen Byrum, 83, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 22 at Austin & Bell Funeral Home with Pastor Ed Sharpe officiating.
Interment followed in Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Byrum was born July 24, 1919, in Simpson County, Ky., to the late Buford Logan and Leonora Gertrude Herndon Byrum.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife, Alma Louise Walker Byrum, a granddaughter, Kimberly Michelle Roberts, and seven brothers and sisters.
Survivors include sons, Butch Byrum of Springfield and Linda Watkins of Swansea, S.C.; a sister, Evelyn Wilson of Russellville, Ky; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers were Jim White and Rayburn Watson.

Alfred Odell Wooden
Alfred Odell Wooden, 56, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Vanderbilt Hospital.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Phillip Kellerman officiating.
Pallbearers were Kelly Wooden, Mike Stafford, Alton Mayes, Bill Mantlo, Joe Mantlo, Doug Wooden and Red Denson.
Mr. Wooden was born in Robertson County to Evelyn Louise Mantlo Wooden Hunnicutt and the late Marion E. Wooden.
He was the retired owner of K&S Vending Company.
Survivors in addition to his mother are his son, Kelly D. and his wife, Christy Wooden, of Greenbrier; a daughter, Stacey and her husband, Michael Stafford, of Greenbrier; a brother, Doug Wooden of Chattanooga; a sister, Wanda Wooden of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Kayla and Hunter Wooden, and Lacey Holt, all of Greenbrier; cousins, Jim, Bill, Joe, Jody, Steve and Cindy Lou.
