HUBERT FINLEY KERR, 89, of Savannah, Tennessee, retired farmer and insurance agent, passed away on October 8, 2001 at Hardin County General Hospital in Savannah. Memorial Services will be on Thursday, October 11 at 1 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Savannah. Shackleford Funeral home in Savannah has charge. Burial will be at the Kerr cemetery in a private family service.
"Mr. Hubert" was a row crop and cattle farmer for more than 50 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. He was also a general agent for Tennessee Farm Bureau for 17 years. He was a Charter Member and Past President of the Hardin County Farm Bureau. He received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award from the Savannah Rotary Club. He was also a past board member of the Hardin Farmers Co-Op and the First United Methodist Church.
In 1942, Mr. Kerr won the Tennessee Plant to Prosper Award sponsored by The Commercial Appeal.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret Harrison Kerr; a son, Jim Kerr, of Savannah; two daughters, Pat Kerr Tigrett and Jana Kerr Pettey, both of Memphis, Tennessee; three grandsons, Steven Kerr of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, Kerr Tigrett of Santa Monica, California and Holt Edwards, of Memphis; one granddaughter, Hillary Edwards of Memphis; and two great-grandchildren, Harrison and Will Kerr. He is predeceased by his parents, John R. and Estelle Hitchcock Kerr and three brothers, Ralph Kerr, Herman Kerr, and John Kerr, Jr.
The family requests that memorials be sent to the First United Methodist Church in Savannah, Tennessee.

RUTH WOODARD, 70, of Memphis, President of Mid-South Funeral Home, died Sun. of heart failure at Methodist Central. He was the past President of the Bluff City Jaycees and in 1968 was recognized as the Jaycee of the Year by the Bluff City Junior Chamber of Commerce. He will be fondly remembered by friends & former classmates of Manassas High School for his out-going personality, impeccable grooming, good taste in personal appearance & his vibrant love for life.He was married to the late Mildred Stephens Lester for 52 years & together they successfully operated & owned Mid-South Funeral Home, which was the love of his life.
Warm memories of a well spent life will be cherished by his daughters, Brenda Eddings and Emily Surgeon; grandchildren: Cicely, Stephen, and Kennedy; great-granddaughter, Ilynn Nicole; 2 sisters, Norma J. Price of Hammond, Ind., and Velma Parker of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister & brother-in-law, George and Vera Clark of Memphis; a devoted god-son, Rev. Dr. Justin R. Holloway; loyal neighbors, Howard & Arnette McDonald, a devoted friend, Jewel Porter & many nieces & nephews. Visitation will be Wed. 12 noon-7 p.m. in the chapel of Mid-South Funeral Home. Family Hour 6-7 p.m. Funeral Thur. 11:00 a.m. Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church with entombment in Forest Hill cemetery Midtown.
Visitation was Tuesday, Oct. 9, 5-7. Funeral Services Wed. Oct. 10, 12 noon, both at Norris Road Church of Christ, Memphis, Tn. Burial at Calvary cemetery.

ISABEL "CRICKETT" MAY, 83, of Houston, died Tuesday, November 6, 2001. Formally of Memphis, TN. Mrs. May was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Houston, National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the state of Texas, member of First Presbyterian Church and a Docent at Bayou Bend. Mrs. May is survived by her husband, Eugene W. May; daughter, Miriam May Hundley; a son, Eugene W. May, Jr.; granddaughters, Sarah and Mary Margaret Hundley; and a brother, Robert Metcalf.
Friends are invited to visitation with the family from 4 until 6 o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, November 8, 2001, at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive. Memorial service will be conducted at 3 o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, November 9, 2001, at the First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main, with Rev. Asa Hunt officiating. Contributions for those desiring to First Presbyterian Church or Bayou Bend.

BARBARA KINZEL LIVERMORE, 55, of Charlotte, NC, died October 28, 2001, following a brief illness. She was a graduate of White Station High School, attended Mississippi University for Women and graduated from the University of Memphis.
Barbara was a teacher at Sharon Presbyterian Day School in Charlotte for 13 years where she dearly loved teaching 4 year olds. She was also active at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church where she had been a member since moving to Charlotte 31 years ago.
In addition to George R. Livermore III, her husband of 32 years, she is survived by her daughters Laura King, Katherine Klein, Melissa Livermore, and 2 grandchildren. She is also survived by her mother, Dorothy Rittelmeyer Kinzel and her brother, John S. Kinzel, both of Memphis. She was predeceased by her father Wilfred S. Kinzel and her younger brother, William V. Kinzel.
Funeral services were held at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church with the Reverend David Hodges and the Reverend Charles Livermore, officiating.

GENEVA "SUE" HOPPER passed away Saturday, November 3, 2001. Preceded in death by daughter Linda Sue Hopper, husband Hershel Hopper and sister Peggie Murphie. Survived by sons Clark Hopper and John Hopper, daughter-in-law Gail Hopper, grandson Garrett Hopper, step-grandchildren Michael Volkin, Randy Volkin and Kimberly Volkin, sisters Jean Cardani and Carrie Stegbauer, and beloved dog Samantha. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 8, 2001, 11:00 a.m., at Winwood Presbyterian Church, 11735 Grant Road, Cypress, TX 77429. Burial will be held Saturday, November 10, 2001, 11:00 a.m., at Memphis Memorial Park, Memphis, TN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Winwood Presbyterian Church.

Dr. McCarthy DeMere, 83, of Collierville died Tuesday, Oct. 30th from complications of pneumonia at St. Francis Hosp. He was a graduate of Humes High School, Rhodes College, UT Medical College, and Un. of Memphis Law School. He was a WWII Army Veteran, Chief of Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery for the European Theatre of Operations, and received the Croix de Guerre Luxemburg for service during the Battle of Bulge. He was Past-Pres. of Memphis and Shelby County Medical Society, Southeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons, and Tennessee Bar Assoc. He served on the Tennessee and Mississippi Crippled Childrens' Assoc. for 20 years. He was Adjunct Professor to the UT Medical College for 23 years. He was elected to Tenn. Governor of Sertoma, and Past-Chairman of Juvenile Court Advisory Council for Dogwood Village and Boys Town of Memphis. DeMere was the Founder of the Un. Interfaith Society of Tenn. He was not only a mere lawyer, but wrote the Law on "Definition of Death" for the State of Tenn.-now law in 46 states. DeMere was a member of Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of the Confederacy, Sons of Colonial Wars and their Past-Pres. to the National Eagle Scout Assoc. Chickasaw Council Boy Scouts of America. He was a Reserve Deputy Sheriff and recipient Spirit of Life Award from The City of Hope. He received the Medal of Honor of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
DeMere was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church.

McCarthy "Mac" DeMere, a man with a deep passion for learning and a heartfelt duty to pass on the knowledge and skills he had attained. His accomplishments were extensive in Medicine and Law. He attributed his greatest successes in the lives that were forever changed by his skilled surgical hands. When asked what would you like to be best remembered for he replied, "as a teacher that challenged the minds of my students to learn more and to surpass me, but to always give back to the community from which they came, and not to lose sight that God has given each person a unique gift or talent to be shared with All humanity."
He is survived by his 5 children, 10 grandchildren, and a sister, Dr. Leona DeMere Dwyer of Memphis.
DeMere lived the last 6 months of his life with his niece and nephew, Dr. Kevin and Patrice Dwyer Wells of Collierville, and Caregivers; Charles and Martha Hoaglin, Sam and Melissa Talarico, Allen Exelbierd.
Family requests that memorials be sent to St. Jude Childrens Research Hosp., St. Francis Hosp. Surgery Depart., and Boy Scouts of America.

RICHARD LEE GRIMES, SR. "DICKIE", 68, a resident of Smuteye Community, died at his home Thurs., Nov. 1, 2001. He is survived by his daughter, Lynn Grimes Lenert and her husband Cliff of Kemah, Tx; son, Richard Lee Grimes, Jr. and his wife Glenda, son, George Sidney Grimes; granddaughter, Sarah Beth Grimes, all of Memphis, TN. He also leaves a brother, Sidney Grimes and wife, Pat of Smuteye Community and sister Vickie "Jan" Phillips Fitz-Gerald and husband Michael of Montgomery, AL. There are also a number of other family members and friends. A Memorial Service was held at Indian Creek Baptist Church on Sun., Nov. 4, 2001, officiated by Rev. David Stewart, followed by a family gathering for the disposition of ashes. Memorials may be sent to the Indian Creek Baptist Building Fund,

EVELYN K. BATES, 82, of Memphis, retired Lab Technician for Firestone Tire and Rubber Co., died of heart failure Wed. at Methodist Healthcare Central. Services will be at noon Wed. at Antioch Baptist Church, 4715 New Allen Rd where she was a member, with burial in Calvary cemetery. Mid-South Funeral Home has charge. Mrs. Bates, the widow of Henry Bates, Sr. leaves three sons, Sherman Bates, Bobby Bates, & Henry Bates, Jr., a brother Rev. Joseph Kitchen of Chicago, Il, a sister Bernice Kitchen, of Memphis, 11 grandchildren, & nine great grandchildren. View is at Mid-South Funeral Home, Tues. from 4 p.m.-7 p.m.

Molly Glankler Surratt, 41, of Memphis died of cancer at her home, November 01, 2001. She was a Distribution Clerk. Services will be at 1:30 Nov. 5 at St. Michaels Catholic Church. Burial will be at Calvary cemetery. Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel is in charge.
Mrs. Surratt is the daughter of the late Frank & Sue Glankler. She is survived by 2 daughters, Jennifer Surratt of Memphis, TN and Sadler Surratt, of Galloway, TN., 1 son Jamie Surratt, of Galloway, TN. She leaves 4 sisters, Maggie Rains of Memphis, TN, Karen Glankler of Louisville, KY, Gigi Rolfers of Macon, GA, Mindy Lemons, of Denver, Co.; 2 brothers Frank Glankler, Jr. of Portland, Oregon, and Andrew Glankler of South Bend, IN.

RAYMOND E. SANDERS died at his home in Memphis, TN, of cancer at the age of 71, on October 20, 2001.
He is survived by his wife June Sanders and his sons; Gary W. Sanders of Springfield, MO; R. Glenn Sanders of Memphis, TN; David E. Sanders of Brentwood, TN; James M. Sanders of Huntersville, NC, a sister Patti Walker of Heber Springs, AR, and nine grandchildren.
Ray and June recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.
Ray spent his entire 55-year career in the automatic fire sprinkler industry. He was formerly President of National Fire Sprinkler Corporation and most recently Chief Executive Officer of Island Industries Inc. Ray had a vibrant "hands on" personality and was very successful in business and his personal life. Inquisitive and active of mind, desiring to know and excel, Ray determined to seek out and freely share what he'd learned of life's lessons with others. Ray enjoyed all outdoor family activities including fishing, canoeing, and gardening. He also enjoyed woodcarving, reading, and life in general. He considered it an honor and privilege to be included in the Friday morning Bible study at White Station Church of Christ.
Ray will be greatly missed by his family and friends who find comfort in the knowledge he will spend eternity with our Lord Christ Jesus.

J.T. Lavendar, 84, of Columbus, MS, retired Assistant Fire Chief, passed away October 29, 2001 at Windsor Place - Columbus, MS. Funeral service was Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, 10:30 am at Memorial Funeral Home.
Dr. Bobby Douglas officiated the services. Burial at Rowan cemetery, Caledonia, MS.
Mr. Lavendar was born February 5, 1917, in Caledonia, MS, son of the late James Thomas & Eulalee Halbert Lavender. He was a graduate of Caledonia High School & worked at CAFB during WWII. He was employed with The Columbus Fire Dept. & retired as Assistant Fire Chief after 30 yrs of service. An avid hunter & fisherman, Mr. Lavender was a member of First Baptist Church & George Shalles Sunday School Class. He was also a member of York Rite Masonic Bodies of Columbus.
Survivors are wife, Mrs. Sue Lavendar of Columbus; daughter & son-in-law, Marcia & George W. Bryan of Memphis, TN; grandchildren, Suzanne Bryan Sampietro & her husband, John, of Memphis, TN, George Wilkerson Bryan, Jr. & his wife, Amy, & Laura Bryan Williams & her husband, Shane, all of West Point, MS., & Nancy Cameron Bryan of Baltimore, MD.; great grandchildren, John Wright Sampietro & Sofia Louise Sampietro.
