Johnny E. Barnett

Johnny E. "Head" Barnett, 38, 134 Green Meadows Drive, Elizabethton, died Thursday, December 3, 1998, at Johnson City Medical Center as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident Wednesday afternoon.
Mr. Barnett was a native of Carter County and a 1978 graduate of Hampton High School. He was a member of East Side Baptist Church and had served as youth minister at Fairview Baptist Church, Sinking Creek Baptist Church and East Side Baptist Church. He was employed by Heritage Vault Service as a metal burial vault installer.
Mr. Barnett was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Jason Barnett, in 1984, and two uncles, Darrell and Joe Campbell.
Survivors include his wife, Rene Crowder Barnett, of the home; a daughter, Jessica Barnett, of the home; his parents, John and Imogene Campbell Barnett, 114 Charity Hill Road, Elizabethton; a sister, Anna Jean Calhoun, Hampton; two brothers, Lamont Barnett, Johnson City, and Russell A. "Rusty" Barnett, Hampton; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Sam and Loretta Shull Crowder, 470 Minton Hollow Road, Elizabethton; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Sambo and Missie Crowder, 509 Cherry Street, Elizabethton; five aunts, Maxine Jones, Kent, Ohio, Arlene Campbell Cox and Martha Hileman, both of Elizabethton, Margie Williams, Johnson City, and Stacey Morgan, Roan Mountain; and four uncles, Buster Barnett and Oran Campbell, both of Elizabethton, Junior Barnett, Johnson City, and Bill Campbell, Chattanooga. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Carrie VanDyke Byrd, 60, 606 Trudy Street, Elizabethton, died Thursday, December 3, 1998, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness.
Mrs. Byrd was a native of Washington County and a daughter of the late Paul and Grace Barnett VanDyke. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Pete VanDyke.
Mrs. Byrd had lived most of her life in Elizabethton. She was a retired employee of the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital after 28 years of service.
Survivors include her husband, Alvin Byrd; a daughter, Kathy Byrd Odom, Johnson City; a son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Sandy Byrd, Johnson City; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Guess, Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Shawn Byrd, Crystal Baines, Nora Grace Byrd, Derrick Kirby and Shannon Kirby; and a special friend, Doug Blevins.

Mrs. Winnie G. Carrier, 82, 315 George Brown Road, Hampton, died Wednesday, December 2, 1998, at Pine Ridge Care Center following an extended illness.
Mrs. Carrier was a native of Butler and a daughter of the late Dan Griffith and Julia Matherly Griffith Poole. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Carrier, a sister and two brothers.
Mrs. Carrier was a retired cashier at Brown's Supermarket where she had been employed for a number of years. She was a member of the Union Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Lockie Goodwin and Mrs. Deamie Rainbolt, both of Hampton, and Mrs. Hattie Sommers. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Coy Edmison, 94, 1947 King Springs Road, Johnson City, died Thursday, December 3, 1998, at North Side Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Edmison was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Willard and Nannie Bowling Edmison. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Lothery Edmison, in 1981.
Mr. Edmison was a retired employee of American Bemberg Corporation. He was a member of the Sinking Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Jimmy Edmison, Johnson City; a grandson, Jason Edmison, Johnson City; a brother, Wiley Bud Edmison, Elizabethton; and two sisters, Lucy Edmison, Hampton, and Betty Miller, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

John Alfred Hopson, 45, 612 West E Street, Elizabethton, died Thursday, December 3, 1998.
Mr. Hopson was a native of Carter County.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Ellis Hopson, of the home; his parents, Conway and Evelyn Hopson; a brother, Dr. Victor Hopson; and a daughter and son-in-law, Kym and Eric Stephens.
Arrangements are incomplete.

Donald David Shoun, 48, 627 Main Street, Butler, died Wednesday, December 2, 1998, at his residence after an extended illness.
Mr. Shoun was a native of Johnson County and a son of the late Thelmer Sherrill and Pauline Copeland Shoun. He was also preceded in death by a brother.
Mr. Shoun was a 1968 graduate of Johnson County High School and was retired due to disability from Burlington Industries with 20 years of service. He was a member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Tammy Renee Grindstaff, Mountain City, and three brothers, Sherrill Shoun, Butler, Carl Shoun, Hampton, and Tom Shoun, Phoenix, Ariz.

Rev. R.M. Mounts

Rev. R.M. Mounts, 82, of Barnwell, S.C., died Friday, November 27, 1998.
The Rev. Mounts was a native of Freeborn, Ky., and had retired as a minister. He was a Mason, a Shriner and a member of the Legion of Honor and the Hamasa Temple. He was a member of Mount Lebanon Christian Church.
Preacher Mounts had served a number of churches in the East Tennessee area as either a Pastor or Evangelist.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen Lumsden Mounts; two sons, Ronald Mounts, Orlando, Fla., and Everett Mounts, South Boston, Va.; and two daughters, Jeanette Kelly, Atlanta, Ga., and Eileen Gordon, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. Local survivors are a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kirk Lumsden, and a niece, Kay VanDyke, all of Elizabethton. Five grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, November 30, at Mount Lebanon Christian Church, Barnwell, S.C., with Revs. Fred Kelly, Larry Gordon and Bill Umsletter officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Garrett W. "G.W." Odom, 60, 152 Smith Road, Roan Mountain, died Wednesday, December 2, 1998, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Odom was a native of Banner Elk, N.C., and the son of Etta Hughes Odom, of Elizabethton, and the late Charlie Odom.
Mr. Odom was a member of Northside Baptist Church and was employed at Summers-Taylor Construction Company as a foreman for the past 36 years. He served as a Carter County Constable for eight years.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, JoAnn Odom, of the home; four daughters, Loraine Turbyfill, Elk Park, N.C., Mary "Freda" Odom, Billie Jean Odom and Amanda Jean Odom, all of Roan Mountain; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Charles and Jeanie Odom, Elizabethton, Allen Odom and Teddy and Angie Odom, all of Roan Mountain; three brothers, Lester Odom and Earl Odom, both of Elizabethton, and Wade Odom, Roan Mountain; two sisters, Sally Livingston and Helen Keller, both of Elizabethton; a granddaughter, Brandi Turbyfill, Elk Park, N.C.; a grandson, Michael Grindstaff, Elizabethton; a great-granddaughter, Geordyn Taylor, Johnson City; a special brother-in-law, Billy Frank Smith, Roan Mountain; and special friends, Butch Baumgardner and Pete.

Mrs. Poarch was a native of Idlewild, N.C., and the daughter of the late John R. and Mable C. Soney Wellborn. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Guy Whitson Poarch, January 8, 1963, and by two sisters and eight brothers.
Mrs. Poarch was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirlee and Charles Shankle and Mary and Tommy Ingram, all of Elizabethton; three sisters, Frances Hamilton, Elizabethton, Jean Glover, Knoxville, and Bessie Morgan, Roan Mountain; grandchildren: Michael Ingram and Christopher and Tonia Shankle, all of Elizabethton; a special niece, Judy Whitehead; a special nephew, David Morgan; and special friends, Rachael Guinn and Ida Tkatch. Mrs. Oaks was a native of Avery County, N.C., and the daughter of the late Howard and Melvina Guinn Calhoun.
Mrs. Oaks was preceded in death by two brothers.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Mary Oaks, Hampton; a daughter, Gwinda Maracz, Hampton; two sisters, Hester Bunton, Sawmills, N.C., and Ethel Wright, Minneapolis, N.C.; three grandchildren, Eric G. Mary Jane Gauglitz Wiseman, 69, of Hammond, Ind., died Tuesday, December 1, 1998, at the William J. Riley Memorial Hospice residence in Munster, Ind.
Mrs. Wiseman was a resident of the Calumet area for 48 years. She was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Church and a member of A.A.R.P. and S.O.A.R. She was formerly employed at Edward C. Minas Company as a sales clerk for 20 years.
Mrs. Wiseman was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Marie Elfriede Gauglitz, and a brother, Gunther.

Georgia Miller Berry, 81, Rt. 3, Roan Mountain, died Monday, February 1, 1999, at Sloop Memorial Hospital, Crossnore, N.C., following an extended illness.
Mrs. Berry was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Wesley and Maude Elliott Miller. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Balsom Berry, three brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Berry was a member of Morgan Branch Free Will Baptist Church.

Mr. Hardin was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Lawrence and Pearl Loveless Hardin. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Dennis Lawrence Hardin, and a niece, Katina June Townsend.
Mr. Hardin attended Southside Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Barbara Townsend, Elizabethton, Linda Hambrick and Judy Oliver, both of Drexel, N.C., and two brothers, Leonard Hardin, Valdese, N.C., and Jessee Hardin, Granite Falls, N.C. Seven nephews and five nieces also survive.

Sarah Anne Johnson, 52, 1109 E. Eighth Avenue, #5, Johnson City, died Saturday, January 30, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.
Mrs. Johnson was a native of Carter County and the daughter of Walter Akers, Elizabethton, and the late Frances Hale Akers.
Mrs. Johnson was of the Methodist Faith and was a homemaker.
Survivors, in addition to her father, include a daughter, Jenni Johnson, Redondo Beach, Calif., and a son, David Johnson, Banner Elk, N.C.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later.
Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, is in charge.
