James Edward White Jr., 31, 161 Taylor Avenue, Elizabethton, died Thursday, January 14, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital after a 15-month battle with acute myelogenous leukemia. Mr. White was a native of Carter County and the son of James and Joyce White, of the home. He was of the Baptist faith and was a graduate of ETSU with a degree in Environmental Health. Mr. White was preceded in death by two brothers, Lynn and Peter White, and his paternal grandparents, Montie and Kate White. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his brother, Monty C. White, Jonesborough; two sisters, Rhonda Cable, Hampton, and Robyn Lynn White, of the home; a foster sister, Angela Greer, Elizabethton; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Grenier, Spartanburg, S.C.; two uncles, George and William White, Elizabethton; an aunt, Irene Rominger, Greeneville; a great-aunt, Elizabeth Traylor, Spartanburg, S.C.; and a sister-in-law, Jolene White, Elizabethton. Bonnie Belle Hamilton Barnett, 90, 211 Stockton Road, Roan Mountain, died Wednesday, January 13, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. Mrs. Barnett was a native of Clay County, N.C., and the daughter of the late Rev. James Robert and Rebecca Arlesia Lowe Hamilton. She was also preceded in death by a son, Leslie Barnett, two brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Barnett was a member of Cove Creek Presbyterian Church and had worked as a cook from 1946-1950 at Cloudland High School. She attended school at Lees-McRae in Banner Elk, N.C. Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Bert Barnett, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Wayne and June Dale Barnett, Elizabethton; a daughter and son-in-law, Wynona and Joe Holland, Elizabethton; two sisters, Ethel Wilkie, Franklin, N.C., and Ellavee Jory, Murphy, N.C.; a special niece, Dorothy Shuffler, Roan Mountain; four grandsons; four granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and five great-granddaughters. Ollie J. Carver Ferguson, 85, of Kingsport, died Wednesday, January 13, 1999, in SunRise at Hillside after an extended illness. Mrs. Ferguson was a native of Carter County and had resided in Kingsport most of her life. She was a daughter of the late George and Mary Hyder Carver and was also preceded in death by her husband, James Lee Ferguson Sr.; three infant children; two grandsons; a granddaughter; two step-sons; a step-daughter; a sister, Liddie Morton; and two brothers, Dave and John Carver. Mrs. Ferguson was a homemaker and attended Pactolus Methodist Church. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Margie and Odell Robinson and Leota and Robert Laws, all of Kingsport, and Sue and Wayne Snider, Denton, N.C.; six sons and five daughters-in-law, Gene and Margaret Ferguson, Surgoinsville, Leonard and Bevelene Ferguson and Earl and Bettye Ferguson, all of Kingsport, Jackie and Carol Ferguson, Thomasville, N.C., Roy Ferguson, Fall Branch, and Kenneth and Linda Ferguson, Greensboro, N.C.; a step-daughter, Glendola Charlton, Fall Branch; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Pearl Heaton, Roan Mountain; and several nieces and nephews. Eugene Alonzo Jackson, 1506 E. Unaka Avenue, Johnson City, formerly of Elizabethton, died Monday, January 11, 1999, at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center Hospital. He was the fourth of eleven children born to Robert Lee and Katie Watson Jackson of Elizabethton. He received his primary and secondary education from the Douglas School System. He graduated in 1942, the school's third High School Graduating Session. Eugene was a graduate of Norfolk Division of Virginia State College, now known as Hampton University. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. He was employed in Administration of the Norfolk Port Authority Embarkation Center, Norfolk, Va. He was a disabled Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific Campaign. He was a member of the Browns Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Ola Mae Taylor, Elizabethton, and Mrs. Nevada Ford, Johnson City, and two brothers, Mr. William D. Jackson, Portsmouth, Va., and Gordon M. Jackson, Biloxi, Miss. Mrs. Russell was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Ellen Carver Clark. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, John Kirk Stevens, her second husband, Ephron Russell, and also a special niece, Elsie Whitehead. Mrs. Russell was a member of the Oak Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include an adopted niece, Sylvia Tolley, Whitemore Road, Hampton; two special nieces, Jacqueline Street, Sally Cove Creek Road, Hampton, and Juanita Goad, Roan Mountain; several other nieces and nephews and several step-children and step-grandchildren. Mrs. Etta Sharp, 93, Charlestown Retirement Center, Cantonsville, Md., formerly of 619 West G Street, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, December 15, 1998, at Charlestown Care Center, Cantonsville, following an extended illness. Mrs. Sharp was a native of Claiborne County, Tenn., and the daughter of the late Claiborne Campbell and Anne Ausmus Rogers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Luther Franklin Sharp Sr., April 11, 1974. Mrs. Sharp had lived in Cantonsville for the past nine years. She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and a retired school teacher with Elizabethton City Schools. She was a member of the Elizabethton Book Club. Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Hale, Raleigh, N.C.; a son, Frank Sharp, Columbia, Md.; a granddaughter, Marcia Russell, Winston-Salem, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Stuart Russell and Virginia Russell, both of Winston-Salem, N.C. He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Eva Ruth Arnold and Joyce Arnold Campbell. Mr. Arnold was a retired timberman and a member of Bethany Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Edith O. Arnold, of the home; a son, James Dean Arnold, Elizabethton; and a daughter, Patsy Clark, Mountain City. Mrs. Fannie C. Crowe, 92, formerly of Rt. 1, Elizabethton (Horseshoe Community), died Tuesday, January 12, 1999, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton following an extended illness. Mrs. Crowe was a native and lifelong resident of Carter County and the daughter of the late Thomas I. and Sally Pierce Crowe. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters. Mrs. Crowe was the first cook at Siam Elementary School and had also worked in several restaurants in the Elizabethton area. She was a member of Siam Baptist Church. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Wilma Crowe, Kingsport; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Judy and Dr. Gary Reedy, Clarks Summit, Pa.; and a great-granddaughter, Bailey Reedy, Clarks Summit, Pa. Mrs. McClellan was a native of Avery County, N.C., and a daughter of the late Lloyd and Leurian Fields Keller. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ed McClellan, and a son. Mrs. McClellan had lived most of her life in Carter County. She was a member of the Simerly Creek Church of God. Mr. Smith was a native of Knox County and a son of the late Leonard and Alta Lee Smith. He was also preceded in death by a son, Hayden Smith, April 1, 1993. Mr. Smith had lived in Pomona, Calif., from 1966 until 1989 when he came to Elizabethton. He was retired from the General Dynamics Corporation of Pomona. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and also had served in the Marines. He was a member of the C Street Church of Christ, Elizabethton. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Vines Smith; three daughters, Dawn Ruby, Oshkosh, Wis., Deloris Reline and Twana Hively, both of Elizabethton; two sisters, Peggy Gaston of Indiana and Juanita Bray, Knoxville; three brothers, Johnny Webb of Ohio, Jerry Smith and Howard Smith, both of Knoxville; four granddaughters, Desiree Portillo, Christy Ruby, Deloris Hively and Cathy Hively; and three grandsons, Joshua Reline, Ernie Hively and David Ruby. She was retired from Carter County Memorial Hospital as a nurse. Survivors include her husband, Chester R. Ann Wootton Pierce, 63, 161 Avon Street, Elizabethton, died Saturday, January 9, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Pierce was a native of Carter County and the daughter of Pauline Chapman Wootton, Elizabethton, and the late Robert J. Wootton Sr., who died in 1968. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Gregory Earl Pierce, in 1959, and Anthony Scott Pierce, in 1969, and a brother, Dr. Robert J. Wootton Jr., in 1996. Mrs. Pierce was a member of the Centerview Church of Christ. She was a counselor for the Department of Human Services for 25 years, and was also a member and secretary of the B&PW Club and the TN State Employees Association. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Sonny Pierce, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Chris J. and Priscilla S. Pierce, Elizabethton; a granddaughter, Keshia Ann Pierce, Elizabethton; a brother, Jerry B. Wootton, Elizabethton; and a special friend, Yvonne Matson, Baltimore, Md. Albert E. Spaller Sr., 89, 408 E. Grand Avenue Ext., Johnson City, died Sunday, January 10, 1999, at North Side Hospital following a lengthy illness. Mr. Spaller was a native of Banner Elk, N.C., but had lived most of his life in Johnson City. He was a son of the late Fred A. and Martha Ramsey Spaller. Mr. Spaller worked as a Salesman/Estimator for Johnson City Foundry Machine Works. He was a founding member and Deacon of King Springs Baptist Church and served as Music Director at several local churches including King Springs Baptist. He was a published Poet and Song Writer. Survivors include his wife, Dora Mae Strickland Spaller; a daughter, Jennie Lee Hubbard, Johnson City; two sons, Albert E. Spaller Jr., Johnson City, and David E. Spaller, Carolina Beach, N.C.; and a sister, Eva Berry, Elizabethton. Ten grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren also survive. Elsie Street Whitehead, 77, 121 Cemetery Hill Lane (Whitehead Hill Section), Roan Mountain, died Saturday, January 9, 1999, at Cannon Memorial Hospital, Banner Elk, N.C., following an extended illness. Ms. Whitehead was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late McKinney and Effie Clark Street. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Luther Whitehead, and a son. Ms. Whitehead was a member of Fork Mountain Free Will Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Survivors include nine sons, J.D. Whitehead, Arden Whitehead and Terry Whitehead, all of Roan Mountain, Randy Whitehead, Hampton, D.L. Whitehead, Jack Whitehead, Robert Whitehead, Kenneth Whitehead and Delaney Whitehead, all of Elizabethton; two daughters, Wanda (June) Lyons, Marion, N.C., and Susan Burdick, Scottsdale, Ariz.; 27 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; an aunt, Arie Russell, Hampton; and special friends, Trula Fortner and Mandy Potter, both of Roan Mountain. John G. Petrey II, 52, Meadowview Drive, Port Orange, Fla., died Wednesday, January 6, 1999, at his home. Mr. Petrey was a native of Elizabethton. He moved to Port Orange, Fla., in 1991 from Scotland. He was a buyer for local hospitals until his illness. Mr. Petrey was a member of the American Legion, Tennessee; the British Legion, Scotland; and Immanuel Baptist Church, Elizabethton. He attended George C. Wallace Community College in Selma, Ala. He coached all levels and ages of athletics as a volunteer for football, basketball and baseball. Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Elizabeth Petrey; a son, John G. Petrey III, Tallahassee, Fla.; a daughter, Peggy Winans, South Daytona, Fla.; his father, John G. Petrey Sr., Sandy, Utah; two sisters, Peggy Lingerfelt, Elizabethton, and Barbara Shields, Sandy, Utah; and a granddaughter, Megan E. Winans, South Daytona, Fla. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hospice Care Center, Port Orange, with Rev. Jady Arnold Birchfield, 63, 344 Sims Hill Road, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, January 5, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Birchfield was a native of Carter County and the son of the late George Thomas and Polly Jane Presnell Birchfield. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Sue; three brothers, Jessie, Walter and Henry Birchfield; and two sisters, Mary Lou Birchfield and Eula Birchfield Garland. Mr. Birchfield was a member of Long Hollow Mission Church and was a retired roofer. Survivors include his wife, Hattie Birchfield, of the home; four sons, Thomas Birchfield, Elizabethton, Cecil Tolley, Elizabethton, and Christopher and Jadie Birchfield, both of the home; three daughters, Teresa Birchfield, Elizabethton, and Angelia and Rita Birchfield, both of the home; four sisters, Irene Odom, Bobbie Anderson, Betty Waters and Regina Grindstaff, all of Elizabethton; and a brother, David Birchfield, Elizabethton. Mrs. Caraway was a native of Avery County, N.C., and a daughter of the late Eugene and Tempie Shook Eggers. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Charlotte Cole and Alice Tester, and a brother, Dale Joe Eggers. Mrs. Caraway was a nurse. Survivors include her husband, Ben Hayden Caraway, of the home; a daughter, Karen Howell, Wilmington, N.C.; a son, Mickey Caraway, Newland, N.C.; three sisters, Etta Davis and Mary Lou Eggers, both of Valle Crucis, N.C., and Betty Faye Hughes, Roan Mountain; and four brothers, Jack Eggers and Buster Eggers, both of Lexington, N.C., Claude Eggers, Matney, N.C., and Fred Eggers, Boone, N.C.
