Winnie D. Simmons

Mrs. Winnie D. Simmons, 95, of Life Care Center of Elizabethton, formerly of Rt. 2, Hampton, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness.
Mrs. Simmons had been a resident of Carter County since 1935 and was a daughter of the late Larkin and Jane Bentley Hartley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Simmons Sr., three sons, James Simmons Jr., Dewey Simmons and Robert Simmons, three daughters, Dollie Mullins, Patsy VanDruten and Ruth Simmons, and by two brothers and three sisters.
Mrs. Simmons was a homemaker and a member of the Hampton First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne Simmons and Kenny Simmons, both of Cincinnati, Ohio, and two daughters, Grace Langley, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Betty Jo Glover, Hampton. Numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a niece and a nephew also survive.

Archie Stanley, 73, 116 Margo Drive, Johnson City, died Friday, March 5, 1999, at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Stanley was a native of Clintwood, Va., and a son of the late Ceaburn and Melissa Hawkins Stanley.
Mr. Stanley was a retired farmer. He moved from Virginia to Ohio in 1954, and moved to Carter County in 1990. He was a Navy Veteran of World War II and a member of the Milligan Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Beverly Stanley; a daughter, Reba Eng, Austell, Ga.; four sons, Douglas Stanley, Kingsville, Texas, Jeff Stanley, Elizabethton, Keith Stanley, Hampton, and Kevin and Georgia Stanley, Shillington, Pa.; four brothers, Benny Stanley, Coeburn, Va., Gordon Stanley, Clintwood, Va., Noland Stanley, Berea, Ky., and Sherly Stanley, Bosque Farms, N.M.; and two grandchildren, Peter Stanley and Amanda Stanley. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Hubert K. Whisner, 76, 706 Poplar Street, Elizabethton, died Sunday, March 7, 1999, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.
Mr. Whisner was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Ollie and Mabel Carriger Whisner. He was also preceded in death by a sister.
Mr. Whisner was a retired service station operator. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Jenkins Whisner; a sister, Margie Cover, Elizabethton; two nieces, Marcie Reed and Ann Peters; a nephew, John Melton; and a brother and sister-in-law, George and Norma Melton.

Robin W. Forbes

Robin Wayne Forbes, 59, 406 E. Mill Street, Elizabethton, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Forbes was a native of Carter County and the son of the late William C. '"'Bill'"' and Evelyn Lewis Forbes. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Marie Darrell Forbes, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, William Paul and Marie Solomon, and a brother-in-law, John Frazier.
Mr. Forbes was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the ETSU Legend's Club. After high school he attended ETSU and was a Little All-American in football and signed with the Cleveland Browns. He worked as a teacher/coach at Cocke County High School and coached in Florida and also at Unaka High School. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Paula Solomon Forbes, of the home; a sister, Carolyn Forbes Frazier Pearman, Elizabethton; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Porter and Norma Jean Forbes, Douglas and Martha Forbes, Roger and Mary Forbes, all of Elizabethton, and Lloyd Klenard and Emma Forbes, Lehigh Acres, Fla.; a step-sister, Wanda Geraldine Forbes and Dred Walls, Johnson City; and special cousins, Jo and Rick Eoff, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Bess S. Lumsden

Bess Strickland Lumsden, 91, 450 Shreve Street, Punta Gorda, Fla., formerly of 101 East K Street, Elizabethton, died Sunday, February 28, 1999, at Life Care Center of Punta Gorda.
Mrs. Lumsden was a native of Clifton, Tenn., and was the daughter of the late Dr. Robert H. and Edna Briley Strickland. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Lumsden, in 1991, and three sisters, Nora Miller, Lillian Strickland and Lockie Bell Strickland.
Mrs. Lumsden was a 1929 graduate of Milligan College and a member of the First Christian Church of Elizabethton, where she was a Sunday school teacher and was very involved with the women's Mission and Circle work of the church. For years she and her husband, Leslie, were ardent encouragers of mission work and made a number of trips to help on the field in Haiti and Jamaica. Mrs. Lumsden made 5,000 Barbie Doll outfits for the missionaries to sell in Haiti to support their work.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Denis Lumsden, Atlanta, Ga., and Paul Strickland and Vada Lumsden, Punta Gorda, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia Lumsden and Richard Campbell, Stone Mountain, Ga.; and a sister, Rob McGee, Nashville. Four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Hazel G. Shell, 87, 202 Main Street, Roan Mountain, died Sunday, February 28, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
Mrs. Shell was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late William J. and Ida Calhoun Goodson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter '"'Bud'"' Shell, in 1969, and by four sisters and two brothers.
Mrs. Shell was a member of the Roan Mountain United Methodist Church.
Survivors include several nephews and nieces including Debra F. Killen of Jonesborough.

Mr. Slagle was the owner of the Big Kids Store on Elk Avenue, Elizabethton.
A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Elizabethton Coffee Company, 444 East Elk Avenue, Elizabethton.

Carolyn Louise Osborne, 80, of Jacksboro, formerly of Elizabethton, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at LaFollette Medical Center.
Carolyn was a 1st Lt. in the Womens Army Corps in World War II. Following this service, she was employed by North American Rayon Corporation in Elizabethton and at the time of her retirement was secretary to the plant manager. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Katherine and Bill Osborne, and two brothers-in-law, Joe Hillenbrand and Lee Schmidlin.
Survivors include two sisters, Gladys Hillenbrand, Huntsville, Ala., and Joyce Schmidlin, Jacksboro; four nephews, Steven Hillenbrand, Knoxville, Chris Schmidlin, Caryville, Jim Hillenbrand, Wilton, N.Y., and David Schmidlin, Caryville; and a special friend, Helen Thompson.

George Butler Jr.

George Butler Jr., 65, of Mt. Clemmons, Mich., died there Monday, March 1, 1999.
Mr. Butler was a native of Tarpon, Va., and had lived in Elizabethton for a few years before going to Michigan 40 years ago. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy.
Mr. Butler was preceded in death by his father, George Butler Sr., a son and two sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Butler; four daughters, Sandra, Penny, Joyce and Jennie; three sons, Gary, James and George Butler III; his mother, Mrs. Delcie Butler, Elizabethton; and a sister, Mrs. Ann Depew, Elizabethton. Three aunts and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services and interment will be in Michigan.

Dr. Estill L. Caudill Jr.

Dr. Estill L. Caudill Jr., 82, Pine Hill Road Extension, Elizabethton, died Monday evening, March 1, 1999, at his residence following a brief illness.
Dr. Caudill was a native of Narrows, Va., and the son of the late Dr. E.L. Caudill Sr. and Flora Weatherly Caudill. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Bolton Caudill, October 12, 1987.
Dr. Caudill graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1941. Following his internship, he entered the U.S. Army to serve during World War II. During World War II, Dr. Caudill was in the D Day invasion, the Battle of the Bulge and the crossing of the River Rhine. He was a member of the 101st Airborne and the 82nd Airborne. At the end of World War II, Dr. Caudill returned to Elizabethton and entered into the practice of family medicine.
He had served as president of the Tennessee Academy of General Practice, the Tennessee State Board of Registration in Medicine, was the Carter County Medical Examiner for many years, and served as Medical Director of Beaunit Fibers until his retirement.
Dr. Caudill was a member and past president of the Elizabethton Rotary Club, a former director of Citizens Bank, and a charter director of Security Federal Savings Bank. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Dr. E.L. Caudill III, Manchester, Mass.; two daughters, Anne Clifton Lewis, Guilford, Conn., and Lucy Austin, Ooltewah, Tenn.; a brother, Julian Caudill, Elizabethton; and a sister, Mary Daniel Weiss, Alexandria, Va. Six grandchildren also survive.

James K. Buck II

Dr. James K. Buck II, 36, 1008 Windridge, Kingsport, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at his residence after a brief illness.
Dr. Buck was a native of Carter County and a son of Jim and Marie Webb Buck, Johnson City. He was a 1981 graduate of Elizabethton High School and a 1984 graduate of Milligan College. He attended the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences, Memphis, and graduated in 1989. Dr. Buck completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Bowman Gray Medical Center, Winston-Salem, and completed his Fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis.
Dr. Buck was a Board Certified Allergist and had been in private practice in Kingsport. He was a member of the Colonial Heights Christian Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Marsha McNabb Buck; two sons, Kyle and Camerson Buck, of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Devon and Jennifer Buck, Elizabethton; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Amy and James Motte and Misty Buck, all of Johnson City; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Beulah Buck, Elizabethton; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; his father-in-law, Kyle McNabb, Erwin; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jeff and Susan McNabb, Greeneville.

Dorothy Jean Carden, 68, 219 High Street, Hampton, died Sunday, February 28, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness.
Mrs. Carden was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Dana '"'One Boot'"' and Margaret Brumit Carden. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Peggy Campbell and Joyce Campbell, and a brother, Leslie Patton Campbell.
Ms. Carden was a member of the Union Baptist Church, but attended Hampton First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Joy Bells Sunday School Class. She was a retired employee of Texas Instruments.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford D. Carden, of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Kenneth Heaton, Rebecca and Terry Brumitt, all of Hampton, and Teresa and Dennis Woodring Johnson City; a son, Ronald Curtis Carden, Hampton; a sister and brother-in-law, Loraine and Conley Jones, Johnson City; four grandsons, SFC Ronald Curtis Jr., U.S. Air Force, Louisiana, David Brumitt, Kevin Heaton and Jason Brumitt, all of Hampton; three granddaughters, Kim Moore, Bluff City, Leah Thompson, Lewisburg, Tenn., and Kara Heaton, Hampton. Three great-grandsons, one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Lingerfelt was a native of Sullivan County and a son of the late Doss and Minnie Bowman Lingerfelt. He was also preceded in death by three sons.
Mr. Lingerfelt was a retired carpenter and was of the Free Will Baptist Faith.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Lingerfelt, of the home; two daughters, Dorothy Arnold, Bristol, and Carolyn Barnett, Bluff City; a son, Henry Lingerfelt, Erwin; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Worley Lingerfelt, Bristol, J.D. Lingerfelt, Mountain City, and Bobby Lingerfelt, Bristol.

Martha Jane McCloud, 45, 1906 State Line Road, Elizabethton, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital of an apparent heart attack.
Ms. McCloud was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Joseph G. and Mildred Stout McCloud. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Larry McCloud.
Ms. McCloud was a member of the First Christian Church of Elizabethton.
Survivors include a son, E.W. Johns, of the home; two brothers and a sister-in-law, John McCloud, Elizabethton, and Ronnie and Vickie McCloud, Avon Lake, Ohio; a niece, Dawn Fattore; six nephews, Lance McCloud, Scott McCloud, Travis McCloud, Douglas McCloud, Trane McCloud and Richmond McCloud; four aunts, Mrs. Mattie Holtsclaw, Mrs. Dorothy Shultz, Mrs. Melba Rose Bowers and Mrs. Myrsonne McCloud; and one uncle, Zeb McCloud. Several cousins also survive.

Charles L. Parker Sr., 80, formerly of 900 Pine Ridge Circle, Elizabethton, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton following an extended illness.
Mr. Parker was a native of Healey, Kansas and had lived in Carter County most of his life. He was the son of the late C.H. and Dela Nave Parker.
Mr. Parker was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation, Spinning Department, for 35 years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #360, the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166, and was a Navy Veteran of World War II. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Jr. and Margaret Parker, Elizabethton, and Kenneth Ray and Janice Parker, Jupiter, Fla.; a brother, Herman Parker, Elizabethton; and two sisters, Vera Nave, Cocoa, Fla., and Edith Spurgin, Rockledge, Fla. Three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
It was Mr. Parker's wishes to be donated to the Department of Anatomy, University of Tennessee, Memphis. Friends may call at the home of a son, Charles Parker Jr., 900 Pine Ridge Circle, Elizabethton.

Mrs. Hazel G. Shell, 87, 202 Main Street, Roan Mountain, died Sunday, February 28, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
Mrs. Shell was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late William J. and Ida Calhoun Goodson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter '"'Bud'"' Shell, in 1969, and by four sisters and two brothers.
Mrs. Shell was a member of the Roan Mountain United Methodist Church.
Survivors include several nephews and nieces including Debra F. Killen of Jonesborough.

Grady M. Tester, 86, 116 H. Coggins Road, Jonesborough, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Tester was a native of Foscoe, N.C., and a son of the late Sam and Alice Tester. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Pauline Tester, in 1998, and a brother.
Mr. Tester was a dairy farmer. He was of the Protestant Faith.
Survivors include three sons, Bobby Tester, Jonesborough, Roy Tester, Johnson City, and Dale Tester, Greeneville, and three daughters, Virginia Franklin, Newport, Rosalie Tester, Greeneville, and Anita Partin, Saluda, N.C. Forty-three grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren, 18 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Pauline Markland McMaster, 90, 1099 Rittertown Road, Hampton, died Friday, February 26, 1999, at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Fla., following a brief illness.
Mrs. McMaster was a native of Carter County and a former resident of Murfreesboro. She was a daughter of the late Landon and Arminta Rainbolt Markland and was also preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Wade McMaster, in 1996, and a sister, Mrs. Blanche Cash.
Mrs. McMaster was a member of the Rittertown Baptist Church in Hampton and a Charter Member of the Third Baptist Church in Murfreesboro. She was a former dietician at Central High School in Murfreesboro.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Barbara McMaster, Greenville, S.C., and James and JoAnn McMaster, Chillicothe, Ohio; two brothers, L.J. Markland Jr., Elizabethton, and Edward Markland, Crossville; and two sisters, Mrs. Florence Presson, Elizabethton, and Mrs. Edith Nave, Hampton. Three grandchildren, a great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Kay "Smitty" Smith, 63, 203 Whiteway Drive, Johnson City, died Saturday, February 27, 1999, at Kennestone Hospital, Marietta, Ga.
Mr. Smith was a native of Pardee, Va., and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1959. He was a son of the late Neut Smith and Mae Minor and was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Minor.
Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a paratrooper during the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Paralyzed Veterans of America. He attended East Unaka Christian Church. He was the owner of Racing Team, and was a member of the Carter County Car Club.
Survivors include his wife, Trishia Jackson Smith; a brother, Stewart Wayne Smith, Jonesborough; and a sister, Linda Maggard, Viper, Ky.

Samuel M. "Pete" Benfield, 81, died Saturday, February 6, 1999, at his home in Haneyville, Pa.
Mr. Benfield was born in Ingalls, N.C., the first son of Floyd P. and Elda Ollis Benfield. He had lived much of his life in Elizabethton.
Mr. Benfield was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde Benfield, Leonard Benfield and Harold Benfield.
Survivors include three sons, Robert S. Benfield, Haneyville, Pa., Samuel A. Benfield and Thomas M. Benfield, both of Reading, Pa.; a brother, Berlin Benfield, Atlanta, Ga.; and three sisters, Pauline Greer and Frankie Cornett, both of Elizabethton, and Lee Vandersteel, Alpine, N.J. Seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.

Beatrice McQueen Clark, 334 Sugar Grove Church Road, Butler, formerly of Winston-Salem, N.C., died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness.
Ms. Clark was a native of Johnson County and the daughter of the late Mac H. and Chelsie Robinson McQueen. She was also preceded in death by her husband, W.C. Clark Jr.
Ms. Clark was a member of Butler Baptist Church and was a former beautician.
Survivors include two sisters, Buna Lehman, Georgetown, Texas, and Bonnie Wagner, Butler, and a brother, Estle McQueen, Johnson City. Four nephews and three nieces also survive.

William Joseph "Bill" Deaver, 53, 107 Boxwood Circle, Kingsport, died Thursday, March 4, 1999, at his residence after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Deaver was a native of Carter County. He was an industrial painter by trade and an Army Veteran. He was of the Protestant faith.
Mr. Deaver was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dee and Ida Campbell, and a nephew.
Survivors include his mother, Lillian Ilene Campbell Spaid, Gray; two sisters, Joyce Ann Evans and Alla Marie Ely, both of Johnson City; one aunt, Lotus Crow, of the home; two uncles, John H. Campbell, Elizabethton, and James H. Campbell, Watauga; one nephew, Bobby Joe Daniels Jr., Gray; and one niece, Tina Marie Hoilman, Kingsport. One great-niece, one great-nephew and several cousins also survive.

Mrs. Oma R. McGuire, 84, 8757 Highway 19E, Roan Mountain, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. McGuire was a lifelong resident of Carter County and a daughter of the late John and Bessie Johnson Vance. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jacob D. McGuire, in 1982, a daughter, Connie M. Laws, three brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. McGuire was a homemaker and a member of Lower Shell Creek Christian Church.
Survivors include a son, James D. McGuire, Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Gladys M. Winters, Roan Mountain, and Delores M. Moses, Richmond, Va.; a brother, Howard Vance, Roan Mountain; and a sister, Nola Shell, Roan Mountain. Nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

John C. Regenold

John Charles Regenold, 81, 514 Allen Avenue, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center Hospital, Mountain Home, following an extended illness.
Mr. Regenold was a native of Aurora, Ill., and a son of the late Dorwin L. and Clara Wagner Regenold.
Mr. Regenold graduated from Drury College, Springfield, Mo., in 1950 as a Medical Technologist. He was employed by Burge Hospital, Springfield, Mo., from 1950 until 1955, and was employed at Blessing Hospital, Quincy, Ill., from 1955 until 1957. He was the Chief Technologist at the University of Tennessee Hospital, Knoxville, from 1957 to 1959.
Mr. Regenold came to Carter County Memorial Hospital where he set up the Laboratory. He was Lab Supervisor from 1959 until 1984. He was the First Person to receive the '"'Frist Award'"' from Carter County Memorial Hospital in 1979 as the Outstanding Employee of the Year.
He was an Army Veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart after being wounded in Action. He was a former member of the American Legion and a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Elizabethton.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Weaver Regenold; a daughter, Linda Regenold, Knoxville; three sons, Robert Regenold and James Regenold, both of Elizabethton, and David Regenold, Tempe, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Nathaniel, Jonathan, Rey and Nicky Regenold; and one aunt, Mrs. Elva Moran, Riverside, Calif.
Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
