A graduate of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing and later earned her teacher’s certificate and taught nursing at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was an active member of Winston-Salem First Baptist Church and a volunteer at its Crisis Control Ministry. A strong supporter of the North Carolina School of the Arts, she was a prolific quilter and a member of the Thursday Classic Quilters.
