He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Bennie Woordruff; brothers, Dan, Ted, John, and Kenneth Woodruff; sisters, Eunice Ayers, Ruth Alberson, and Minnie Sitzlar; infant daughter; and daughter, Debbie Woodruff. Survivors include: son, Steve Woodruff of Sweetwater; granddaughter, Ginger French; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Louise Woodruff of Walland; sister-in-law, Lelia Woodruff of Sweetwater; loving and devoted companion, Betty Derrick of Philadelphia; several nieces and nephews. CLARENCE R. LAY (C.R.) Age 82 OF KINGSTON, PASSED AWAY AT PARK WEST HOSPITAL ON MARCH 5, 2003. HE WAS RETIRED FROM MARTIN MARIETTA, K-25, AFTER 34 YEARS OF SERVICE. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH IN HARRIMAN. HE FOUNDED THE MICHAEL DUNN CENTER IN 1972 AND CONTINUED FOR 30 YEARS IN ACTIVE SERVICE TO THAT ORGANIZATION. IN 1973 HE WAS PRESENTED WITH THE GOVERNOR’S DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD. IN 1974 HE WAS APPOINTED BY GOVERNOR WINFIELD DUNN TO THE DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES COUNCIL. IN 1978 HE WAS THE RECIPIENT OF THE SERTOMA SERVICE TO MANKIND AWARD. HE WAS ONLY THE SECOND TENNESSEAN TO WIN INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION AT THAT TIME. Joe Y. Wilson, age 90, of the Christianburg community, Sweetwater, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2003, at home. He was a well known farmer and wood crafter. Mr. Wilson was instrumental in the formation of the Monroe Co. Farmers Co-op, Sweetwater Tobacco Warehouse, the Christianburg Fire Dept., and other organization in the area. Preceded in death by his parents, George and Annie Wilson; special aunt and uncle, Mary Jude and Albert McDonald; brothers and sisters, Marguerite Lemmons, Robert Wilson, Ruby Isenhower, Ronald Wilson, Mary Shewell, and Dorthy Dewitt, and wife, Mable Sue Wilson; son, Joe "Boy" Wilson; daughter, Wanda Sue Wilson. Clyde Wayne Schaffer, age 84, of Sweetwater, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2003, at his home after a lengthy illness. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of First United Methodist Church. He retired from Union Carbide. He was the eldest child of Henry Grady and Lillian Schaffer of Vonore. Preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Russell Schaffer. Survivors include: daughters and son-in-law, Judith Schaffer of Sweetwater, Alyce Jo and Dan Golden of Sevierville; grandsons, Chris and Bryan Russell; brother, J.A. Schaffer of Sweetwater; several nieces and nephews; long-time friend, Ken Axley. Edith Brock Harvey, age 90 of Harriman, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2003 at Roane Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Harvey, by her parents Albert and Martha Wright Brock, five brothers and three sisters. She was a member of Big Emory Baptist Church, where she served in the nursery for 44 years, also, a member of the Women's Missionary Union. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Nick Smith of Harriman; daughter, LIllie Hall of Harriman; sons and daughters-in-law, Dean & Helen Harvey of Oakdale, Roy and Becky Harvey of Harriman; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special niece Karen Payne. Boyd Garrett, age 80, of 505 N. High St., Sweetwater, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at Sweetwater Hospital after a brief illness. He was a member and Deacon of North Sweetwater Baptist Church for many years. He was a member of the Sweetwater V.F.W. Gold Star Post 5156, and the Sweetwater American Legion Post 106. Preceded in death by his parents, William and Minnie Garrett; sisters, Hazel Ruby and Lula Mae Hall; brothers, Jack Garrett and Jim Currier. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sweetwater. Preceded in death by her parents: Jake and Arabell Plemons; siblings, Tom Plemons, Alta Gordon, Lonnie Plemons, Pless Plemons, Gilbert Plemons, Jennie Roe Tilley, Boyd Plemons, McKay Plemons; husbands, Joseph R. Hall and Donald C. Brown. Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, David and Velta Hall, Sr.; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, David and Linda Hall, Jr. all of Sweetwater, Robert and Pam Hall of Stanwood, WA; great-grandchildren, Miranda Hall, David Hall, III, Martin Hall, and Katie Hall; several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents; Adam and Mary Smith; twin brother, David Sexton Smith; sisters, Maggie, Mary, and Gladys. Survivors include: brother, Willie Smith of Sweetwater; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Adams Family, Tim and Christy Gray; Joan and William Bellamy all of Sweetwater. Curt Raby, age 45, of Kingston, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2003. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. Preceded in death by his father; J.R. Raby. Survivors include: wife, Stephanie Raby; sons, Cody and Derek Raby; David Feaker all of Kingston; mother, Mary Raby; brother, Bryan Raby both of Sweetwater; several aunts and uncles. The body is at Kyker Funeral Home, Sweetwater, where the family will receive friends on Saturday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at 8:00 p.m. in Kyker's Chapel with Rev. Paul Lloyd, Rev. Chad Schaffer, and Rev. Jerre Guthrie officiating. Interment 2:00 p.m. Sunday in Cedar Fork Cemetery.

LeRoy B. "Butch" Conklin, age 58, of Chester, New York, passed away Monday, March 17, 2003, at Sloan-Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York, New York. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in Vietnam era. He retired from the Chester Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator. Preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy Jr. and Gertrude McGrady Conlkin; sisters, Agnes Edwards, Grace Conklin, Berniece Payne and Joyce Kyles. Survived by: wife, Shirley Conklin; daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa Strandridge all of NY, Leslie and Neal Schwinzer of Sweetwater; brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and Violet Kyles, Thomas "Dinkey" and Gigi Kyles, Michael and Cher Conlkin; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and Paul Doremus, Virginia and Lester Smith, Joan Edwards all of NY, Mary Kyles of KS; grandchildren, Matthew James Bruce Schwinzer, Mason Harold Storm Schwinzer; mother-in-law, Pearl Fenical all of Sweetwater. Rev. Beecher L. Hammons, Age 90, of Fairfield, Ohio formally of Roane County, passed away Monday, March 24, 2003 at Mercy Hospital, Fairfield, Ohio. He was born January 23, 1913 in Smith County, Tennessee, the son of Edward and Oella (Matheney) Hammons. Rev. Hammons was a veteran of the US Army during WWII. He was a graduate of Carson-Newman College and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as Pastor at churches in Tracy City and Spring City, Tennessee. He was ably assisted in his ministry by his loving wife, Dorotha (Magill) Hammons, who preceded him in death, January 23, 2002. He is survived by one son, Jeff Hammons; 4 brothers, Ernest Hammons of Petersburg, TN, Troy and L.C. Hammons, both of Fayetteville, TN, and Albert Hammons of Dayton, TN; 3 sisters, Margaret Roberts of Hendersonville, TN, Edna Randolph of East Peoria, Ill, and Mary Roberson of Benton, KY. Rev. Hammons was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Tim Hammons; and a sister, Elvina Ashburn. Friends may call at the Kyker Funeral Home, 430 Morgan St., Harriman, TN, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
