Newford D. Owens, 80, Life Care Center of Elizabethton, formerly of Rt. 1, Elizabethton, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, after a lengthy illness. He was a Wise County, Va., native and had lived in Elizabethton since 1940. Mr. Owens was a son of the late Wayland and Altha Rhoton Owens. He was a member of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church, Elizabethton. Mr. Owens retired from North American Rayon Corp. after 19 years of service. He was a Shriner and a member of Hampton Masonic Lodge No. 750 F&AM. Mr. Owens was a World War II Army and Air Force veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Betty Greene Owens, in 1993; his stepmother, Laura Fletcher Owens; three brothers; and one sister. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Pauline Markham, Elizabethton, Mrs. Lillian Hammonds, Gray, and Mrs. Gerry Alley, Clinchport, Va.; two brothers, Dexter Owens, Clinchport, and Rex Owens, Daytona Beach, Fla.; one stepsister, Lorraine Stone, Clinchport; one stepbrother, Elmer Dorton, Duffield, Va.; and one niece. Mrs. Barbara J.C. Haws - ERWIN
Mrs. Barbara Jean Cross Haws, 59, 850 Rock Creek Road, Erwin, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Haws lived in Washington County for most of her life before mowing to Erwin in 1998. She was a daughter of the late Joseph W. and Stella Mae Adkins Cross. Mrs. Haws was a homemaker. She was a Baptist. Mrs. Haws was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Ann Cross. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Haws, Jonesborough, and Ronnie Haws, Erwin; one daughter, Angie Heflin, Erwin; one brother; five sisters; and one grandson, Christian Heflin. Mrs. Lena V. Moore - GRAY
Mrs. Lena Vaughn “Vee” Moore, 88, Gray, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Moore was a Greene County native and had lived in Gray for two years. She was a daughter of the late William T. and Rebecca McNeese Vaughn. She was a 1933 graduate of Jearoldstown High School, where she was valedictorian. Mrs. Moore was a homemaker. She was a member of Union Temple United Methodist Church, where she taught the adult Sunday school class for more than 40 years. Mrs. Moore was a foster grandparent at Greene Valley Development Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harlie Newton Moore Sr.; one son, Harlie Newton Moore Jr.; and one sister, Lula Mae Vaughn. Survivors include five daughters, Betty Blake and Helen Hughes, both of Greene County, Margie Hale and Margaret Wood, both of Washington County, and Janis Rowell, Platt City, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. Mrs. Margaret J.R. Padgett - GREENEVILLE
Mrs. Margaret Jewel R. Padgett, 66, Sunset Boulevard, Greeneville, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Padgett was a daughter of the late Dewey and Velma Tunnell Russell. She retired from the Greeneville City School System. Mrs. Padgett was a member of First Baptist Church, Greeneville, where she taught the Fifth Grade Sunday School Class for many years and particiapted in other church activities. She was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Russell; and one grandchild. Survivors include her husband, Sam L. Padgett; two daughters, Margaret Jane Seaton, Greeneville, and Samantha Lee Bruce, Jonesborough; one sister, Edith Overbey, Kingsport; one brother, Don Russell, Oak Ridge; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Miss Deanna Gail Carver - JOHNSON CITY
Miss Deanna Gail Carver, 57, 131 Oscar Banks Road, Johnson City, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at her residence after a lengthy illness. She was a lifelong Johnson City resident and a daughter of the late Martin C. and Geneva Pauline Nave Carter. Miss Carver retired after 25 years of service as a custodian at East Tennessee State University. She was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include two brothers, Carlos Carver, Jonesboroguh, and Larry Carver, Johnson City; one sister, Pauline Holden, Elizabethton; and several nieces and nephews. Morris-Baker was in charge.

Mrs. Ocie M. Davis - JOHNSON CITY
Mrs. Ocie M. Davis, 78, 413 W. Poplar St., Johnson City, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Davis was a Lansing, N.C., native and had lived in Johnson City for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Cicero and Hattie Dollar Powers. She was formerly employed by Harwood Manufacturing, Marion, Va. Mrs. Davis was a homemaker. She was a member of First Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Claude H. Mrs. Virginia L. Howell, 70, 2113 Savannah Drive, Johnson City, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Howell was a Washington County native and a daughter of the late Jadie and Verna Estep Hurley. She was employed by Appalachian Christian Village. Mrs. Howell was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Howell; and one sister, Dolly Hurley. Cecil Lee “C.L.” Johnson, 78, 2607 Browns Mill Road, Apt. 1, Johnson City, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Johnson was a Washington County native and a son of the late Chester and Elizabeth Shelton Johnson. He was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Johnson was employed as a supervisor by Leon-Ferenbach. He was a member of Boones Creek United Methodist Church. Mr. Jones was a Johnson City native and a son of the late Dr. Alfred and Janie Houston Jones, and a son of Elizabeth “Betty” Jones, Johnson City. He was a stonemason. Mr. Jones was an Army veteran. He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University. Mr. Jones was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and had attended the Protestant chapel at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home. Mrs. June Sherfey - JONESBOROUGH
Mrs. June Sherfey, 402 W. College St., Jonesborough, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Lakebridge Health Care Center. Mrs. Sherfey was a Loudon County native and a daughter of the late Lloyd Dillon Windle Sr. and Myrtle Fisher Windle. She had attended Virginia Intermont College, Bristol. Mrs. Sherfey received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a master’s degree from East Tennessee State University. She was employed as an educator for 40 years. Mrs. Sherfey was a member of Jonesborough United Methodist Church. She was a member of several civic clubs. Mrs. Sherfey was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Walter Lee Sherfey Sr., in 1961. Survivors include two sons, Walter Lee Sherfey Jr., Jonesborough, and Lt. Col. Lloyd W. Mrs. Mary Berry Chase, 87, 100 B. Chase Road, Jonesborough, died Monday, May 20, 2002, at the home of a daughter in Jonesborough. Mrs. Chase was a Washington County native and a daughter of the late Joseph Floyd and Nettie Ellen Loyd Berry. She was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church, where she had held various positions and was a member of the Women’s Society. Mrs. Chase was a lifetime member of the Lamar PTA, the Lamar Home Demonstration Club, Bethesda Women’s Society and the Washington County Farm Bureau, where she had served as director. She was employed as a substitute mail carrier for Jonesborough Route 1. Mrs. Chase was preceded in death by her husband, B.C. Chase, in 1989. Survivors include two daughters, Jane Rambo and Jo Ann Bailey, both of Jonesborough; three sisters, Evelyn McCall, Limestone, and Ruth Cobb and Marie Walter, both of Jonesborough; one brother, Virgil Berry, Aliquippa, Pa.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Bellamy was a Sullivan County native and a son of Gay Vern Hamblen Bellamy, Jonesborough, and the late Joe Bond Bellamy. He retired from Eastman Chemical Co., where he worked in the research lab. Mr. Mosier was a Washington County native and had lived there most of his life until recently moving to Erwin. He was a son of the late John William Mosier and Margaret Carr Mosier. He was employed as a machine operator by Gordon’s Furniture, Johnson City. Mr. Mosier was a Missionary Baptist. Billy “Ted” Pierce, 68, Anderson Healthcare, Gray, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Mr. Pierce was a Carden’s Bluff native and a son of the late Sexton P. and Dora Pierce Pierce. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Elizabethton. Mr. Pierce was the owner of Ted’s Auto Sales, Market Street, Johnson City. He was preceded in death by five brothers, D.O. Pierce, Grant Pierce, Paul Pierce, Elton Pierce and Dan Pierce; and one sister, Bessie Neatherly. Survivors include one brother, Roy Pierce, Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews. John Melvin Johnson, 72, 224 Old Gray Station Road, Gray, died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at North Side Hospital. Mr. Johnson was a Washington County, Va., native and a son of the late Eugene Clark and Mary Catherine Settle Johnson. He was a Korean War veteran. Mr. Johnson was a member of Hales Chapel Christian Church, Gray. He was a member of Sinking Creek Lodge No. 575, Gray. Mr. Johnson retired in 1987 from the Tenite Division of Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport. He was preceded in death by his wife, Erma Buckingham Johnson; and one brother, Denver Johnson. Mr. Hulse was a Washington County native and a son of the late Herman and Roberta Arnold Hulse. He retired in 1982 from the Tennessee Department of Transportation after many years of service. Mr. Hulse was a member of the Lamar Ruritan and a member of Conklin Ruritan, which he helped organize. He was a member of Mt. Wesley United Methodist Church, Jonesborough. He retired in 1990 as an electronic engineer from Texas Instruments. Mr. Blevins was a World War II Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Vesta Kyker, Nona Crum and Clyde Reeser. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dorothy M. Richard “Red” Allen Peters, 55, Tyler Apartments, Building 2, Johnson City, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Mr. Peters was a lifelong Johnson City resident and a son of the late Ed and Thelma Moody Peters. He had worked as a sprayer at Magnavox and as a custodian at East Tennessee State University. Mr. Peters also had worked at Harris-Tarkett. He was a Baptist. Mr. Peters was preceded in death by two brothers, Eddie Peters and Billy Peters. Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Ward, Pikeville, Ky., and Angela Beverly, Mechanicsville, Md.; two sons, Eddie Peters and Ricky Peters, both of Johnson City; two brothers, Ron Peters and Donnie Peters, both of Johnson City; two sisters, Jeanette Hartsell, Telford, and Kathy Peters, Jonesborough; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Lt. Col. Earnest A. Van Huss - JONESBOROUGH
Lt. Col. Earnest A. Van Huss, 55, 1835 Sulphur Springs Road, Jonsborough, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Lt. Col. Van Huss was a Washington County native and had lived here since 1989. He was a son of Lucy Garland Van Huss, Johnson City, and the late Cecil Van Huss. He was a 1964 graduate of Science Hill High School; and a 1968 graduate of East Tennessee State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in English. Lt. Col. Van Huss was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps in 1968, when he was assigned to duty in the Republic of Vietnam. He returned to the United States in 1970, where he was assigned to the 8th Marine Regiment at Camp LeJeune, N.C. In 1974, he was assigned to the U.S. 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific, where he participated in the evacuation of Phnom Penh, Cambodis, and the evacuation of Saigon. In 1976, he returned to Quantico, Va., as a tactics instructor at the Basic School. In 1982, he was assigned as the Executive Officer 1st Battalion 6th Marine Reginment. In 1983, he served as the operations officer for the 22nd Marine Amphibious Unit, where he participated in the Liberation of Granada and then deployed to Beruit, Lebanon. In 1984, he was assisgned to the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, where he served as Executive Officer and Base Commander. In 1987, he was assigned to Camp LeJeune as the G-3II Marine Expeditionary Force until his retirement in 1989. He received the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars with combat “V:, three Navy Commendation Medals and two Combat Action Ribbons. Lt. Col. Van Huss formerly taught history, English and government at Tri-Cities Christian School and Cedar View Christian School. He was employed by Mattern & Craig Inc., as a surveyor. Lt. Col. Van Huss was a member of the 19th Tennessee Volunteer Infantry CSA and the Mountain Empire Modular Railroad Association. He was a former board member of Abortion Alternatives Christian Services. Lt. Col. Van Huss was a former Eagle Scout. He was a member of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church, Gray. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Mrs. Barbara Ann Gouge Van Huss; two sons, Clayton Van Huss and Micah Van Huss, both of Jonesborough; three daughters, Katherine Van Huss, Johnson City, Caroline Van Huss, Jonesborough, and Mary Van Huss, Quantico; one brother, Claude Taylor, Narrows, Va.; and two grandsons. Loyd Dulaney Saylor, 87, 530 Summitt Drive, Jonesborough, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Nursing Home, Mountain Home. Mr. Saylor was a Washington County native and a son of the late John M. and Amy Dulaney Saylor. He was a farmer. Mr. Saylor was a charter member of the Greenwood Ruritan, where he served in various offices. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served as staff sergeant in Gen. George Patton’s 3rd Army. Mr. Saylor received the Bronze Star. He was a member of Eden United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Alma Lee Weaver Saylor; one daughter, Doris Saylor Leonard, Jonesborough; one son, Lawton E. Mrs. Anna R.L. Deakins - JONESBOROUGH
Mrs. Anna Ruth Lones Deakins, 75, 122 Malone Drive, Jonesborough, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Deakins was a Washington County native and a daughter of the late Paul Lewis and Flora Jane Duncan Lones. She retired as a cook from the Washington County School System. Mrs. Deakins was a member of Second Baptist Church, Jonesborough. She was preceded in deeath by her husband, Conley George Deakins. Survivors include two sons, Rickey George Deakins and Steve Allen Deakins, both of Jonesborough; two daughters, Judy Ann Deakins and Penny Sue Francis, both of Jonesborough; and four grandchildren, Tracy Suzanne Deakins, Jennifer Lindsay Deakins, Chad Edward Francis and Hannah Beth Francis. Dillow-Taylor was in charge.

Mrs. Eunice H. Baker - JONESBOROUGH
Mrs. Eunice H. Baker, 81, Jonesborough, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Lakebridge Health Care Center after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Baker was an Ardmore, Okla., native and a daughter of the late Arza Putnam and Audrey Lenora Wright Peters. She was a member of Open Door Baptist Church, Jonesborough. Mrs. Baker was preceded ind eath by two brothers, Clarence Peters and Leonard Peters; and one sister, Kathryn Bury. Survivors include her husband, W.T. Baker; three daughters, Barbara Nopper, Tucson, Ariz., the Rev. Jill Gallo, Jonesborough, and Beverly Turner, San Diego; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Bartholomew, Henderson, N.C., and Linda Nester, Raleigh, N.C.; three sisters, Helen Bowman, Sacramento, Calif., Betty Davis, Sarasota, Fla., and Estella Wood, Marysville, Calif.; one brother, John H. Peters, Grass Valley, Calif.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Dillow-Taylor was in charge.

Mrs. Debbie Louise Miller - JONESBOROUGH
Mrs. Debbie Louise Miller, 48, 1204 Rocky Hollow Road, Jonesborough, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport. Mrs. Miller was a Cullman, Ala., native and a daughter of the late James and Hattie Hollis Gibson. She was a Baptist. Mrs. Miller was employed by Greystone Healthcare Center, Blountville. Survivors include her husband, Earnest Wayne Miller; one daughter, Debbie Miranda Holden, Jonesborough; one brother, Wayne Gibson, Alabama; one sister, Diana Vaughn, Alabama; three grandchildren, Blake Holden, Brittany Holden and Brandon Holden, all of Jonesborough; and several nieces and nephews. Dillow-Taylor was in charge.

Robert E. Kerns - KINGSPORT
Robert Ernest Kerns, 74, Kingsport, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Holston Valley Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Mr. Kerns was an Erwin native and a son of the late Charles and Laura Love Kerns. He retired from State Farm Insurance as an agent after 40 years of service. Mr. Kerns was a member of Litz Manor Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon. He was a Navy veteran. Mr. Kerns was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a charter member of Crossings. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Thelma Chandler Kerns; two daughters, Laura Kerns Henderson, Johnson City, and BetsAnn Kerns Henderson, Kingsport; two sons, Robert E. Kerns II, Kingsport, and Dr. Ross Kerns, Knoxville; three sisters, Blanche Masters, Erwin, and Peggy Schaumberg and Jo Draine, both of Johnson City; one brother, Everett Kerns, Jonesborough; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. East Lawn, Kingsport, was in charge.
