Mrs. Holder was an Abingdon, Va., native and a daughter of the late Joseph and Sally Schwartz Cox. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Holder was a member of Roan Hill Baptist Church, Johnson City. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include her hsuband, Alex Holder; one son, Lawrence Phillips, Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Manuel Cox and Sherman Cox, both of Johnson City; two sisters, Ruth Hensley, Chuckey, and Josephine Campbell, Kingsport; two grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. Mrs. Marie M. Carson - JONESBOROUGH
Mrs. Marie M. Carson, 77, Jonesborough, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport. Mrs. Carson was a Rogersville native and had lived in Washington County. She was a daughter of the late Hagen and Louise Miner. She was a member of Kendricks Creek United Methodist Church. Mrs. Carson was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers. Paul Robin Taylor, 56, Kingsport, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home. Mr. Taylor was a son of Roy Gardner and the late Rebecca Taylor. He was owner and operator of Action Cooling and Heating, Johnson City. Mr. Taylor was an Air Force veteran. He was a former pastor of Summersville Baptist Church, Kingsport. He was a member of Parkway Baptist Church, Bristol. Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by one brother, Donnie Gardner. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Carolyn Taylor; five daughters, Robin Cox, Tammy Birch, Melissa Leach and Sonya Acito, all of Kingsport, and Vivian Taylor, of the home; one foster daughter, Nikki Goodwin, Bluff City; two sisters, Wilma Morgan and Sue Quinn, both of North Carolina; five brothers, Charlie Stevens, Limestone, Roger Stevens, Virginia, and Richard Gardner, Gene Gardner and Jimmy Gardner, all of North Carolina; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Benny Joe “Ben” Millsap, 65, 354 Chestnut St., Mount Carmel, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Indian Path Medical Center, Kingsport. Mr. Millsap was a Shady Valley native and a son of the late Joseph and Mary Edna Hawks Millsap. He retired from Tennessee Eastman Co. as a supervisor. Mr. Millsap was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathy Jean Millsap. SPRUCE PINE, N.C. — Jay Garland, 70, Highway 19E, Micaville, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at Brian Center. Mr. Garland was a Mitchell County native and a son of Pearl Stevens Garland, Bakersville, and the late Doss Garland. He was employed by Avondale Mills as a card technician. Mr. Garland was a member of Mine Fork Freewill Baptist Church. He was a member of Burnsville Masonic Lodge No. 717, AF&AM. Mr. Garland was preceded in death by two sisters, Elaine Garland and Wanda Sue Garland. Danny Hobbs Sr., 52, 1424 Old State Route 34, Telford, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Hobbs was a Washington County native and a son of the late Fred “Grinder” and Mildred Grace Bunton Hobbs. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Jonesborough. Mr. Hobbs was employed as a pipe welder. He was a member of the Local 592 Pipe Fitters. Mr. Hobbs was preceded in death by one brother, Gary Hobbs. Edward E. Johnson - TELFORD
Edward Elmer Johnson, 72, 260 Sliger Drive, Telford, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Johnson was a Cotesfield, Neb., native and had lived in Johnson City since 1972. He was a son of John and Catherine Klassen Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a retired Vietnam War Army veteran, having served in the Special Forces. He received the Vietnam Service Medal and a Purple Heart. Mr. Johnson retired as the owner and operator of a tractor-trailer that he leased to several companies, including Trailer Transit. He was preceded in death by three brothers. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Doris A. BEL AIR, Md. — Herbert Ulis Tipton, 73, Whiteford, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Mr. Tipton was a son of the late Zeke and Lucy Tipton. He retired from the Hartford County Department of Transportation. Mr. Tipton was a Baptist. Miss Ella R. Rogers, 83, 214 Ferguson Ave., died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Miss Rogers was a Roanoke, Va., native and had lived in Elizabethton for a number of years. She was a daughter of the late Earl L. and Rosa Lillian Harless Rogers. She was employed by the Bemberg Corp. for several years. Miss Rogers retired from the Elizabethton School System. She was a member of West Side Christian Church. Miss Rogers was preceded in death by one brother, Earl L. Rogers Jr.; and one sister, Kathleen Rogers. She was a native of Shull’s Mills, N.C., and had lived in Johnson City for the last 21 years. She was a daughter of the late Walter L. and Ethel Garrison Earp. Mrs. McLemore was a homemaker. Enoch Thomas Pierson Jr., 77, 100 Hog Eye Road, Limestone, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Nursing Home. Mr. Pierson was a Washington County native and a son of the late Enoch Thomas and Ethel Anderson Pierson Sr. He was a member of Telford Baptist Church. Mr. Pierson retired as a steel worker. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the South Pacific. He served as part of the United States Occupation Force of Japan after the war. He received several commendations and a Good Conduct Medal for his service. Mr. Pierson was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9724. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Mr. Boone was a Watauga County, N.C., native and had lived in Johnson City for the last 75 years. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Vernell Boone. He was a World War II Army veteran. Carl Harshbarger - JOHNSON CITY
Carl Harshbarger, 81, Lamont Street, Johnson City, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home. Mr. Harshbarger was a Washington County native and a son of the late Charles Elbert and Mattie Pearl Harshbarger. He was a member of Company I 133rd Infantry 34th Division during World War II, and served in the 5th Army Italian Campaign, Red Bull Division. Mr. Harshbarger was a recipient of the Purple Heart, three Bronze Stars, Rifleman’s Badge, Campaign Ribbon, Friend’s Citation, American Theater Ribbon, Eastern Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Award. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Etta Wilhoit and Edna Isabelle Harshbarger; and two brothers, Georgia Ray and Ernest Clifford Harshbarger. Miss Rubie M. Edmonds - JONESBOROUGH
Miss Rubie Mae Edmonds, 60, Jonesborough, formerly of Kingston, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at her home. Miss Edmonds was a daughter of the late Levi and Mary Ruth Brooks Edmonds. She attended Union Chapel Baptist Church, Kingston. Miss Edmonds was preceded in death by one brother, A.V. Edmonds; and eight aunts and uncles. Survivors include two aunts, Helen Henline, Kingston, and Ruby Brooks Edmonds, Jonesborough; one uncle, Billy Edmonds, Rockwood; and several cousins, including Charles and Mildred Rice, Jonesborough, with whom Miss Edmonds resided, Leonard Edmonds, Kingston, and Enoch Edmonds, Rockwood. Evans, Rockwood, was in charge.

William I. Greenway Jr. - LIMESTONE
William Ivan Greenway Jr., 42, 2827 Old State Route 34, Limestone, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2002, at his residence after a heart attack. Mr. Greenway was a Greene County native and had lived in Washington County most of his life. He was a son of Ivan and Pat Greenway, Limestone. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Debra Story Greenway; two sons, Bret and Brian Greenway, Limestone; two stepdaughters, Dorothy K. Story and Valesa Whittington, both of Johnson City; two stepsons, Eddie Hicks and Roy Hicks, both of Telford; one sister, Dianne Lane, Limestone; and one brother, Scott Greenway, Telford; four niecews; three nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Woodall-Anderson was in charge.

William N. Shipley Sr. - OAK RIDGE
William “Bill” Nathaniel Shipley Sr., 77, Oak Ridge, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at Marshall C. Voss Health Care Center in Harriman. He was a Johnson City native and a son of David Preston Shipley and Mary Leonard Shipley. Mr. Shipley retired from Union Carbide Corp./Y12 in 1984 where he worked as a photographer. He was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Shipley was a member of First Christian Church of Oak Ridge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Zeta Shipley, in 1990, and by a granddaughter, Sara Beth, in 1977. Survivors include four sons, Ken Shipley, Kissimmee, Fla., David Shipley, Gray, Nat Shipley, Oak Ridge, and Jon Shipley, Powell; two daughters, Mary Beal, Cary, N.C., and Martha Lee, Oak Ridge; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Weatherford Mortuary, Oak Ridge, was in charge.

Mrs. Margaret H. Reppert - TELFORD
Mrs. Margaret Hannah Reppert, 88, 1591 Old State Route 34, Telford, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at the John M. Reed Nursing Home. Mrs. Reppert was a native of Indiana and a daughter of the late Carl and Laura Switzer Crist. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Reppert was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Reppert; and one sister, Fern Buck. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Callicotte, Mooresville, N.C., and Nancy Reppert, Telford; one son, Carl Reppert, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Dillow-Taylor was in charge.

Darius Harrell - VARNVILLE, S.C.
VARNVILLE, S.C. — Darius Harrell, 45, Caw-Caw Swamp Road, Brunson, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at Hampton Regional Medical Center, Varnville. Mr. Harrell was a Unicoi County, Tenn., native and a son of Hazel Harrell, Erwin, and the late Herbert Harrell. He was an Army veteran. Mr. Harrell was a Baptist. Survivors, in addition to his mother; include his wife, Cindy Harrell; one daughter, Jessica Nettles, Johnson City, Tenn.; one stepdaughter, Kelly Tipton, Erwin; two sisters, Sandy Sloop, Fall Branch, Tenn., and Gwendolyn Plummer, Piney Flats, Tenn.; one brother, Stephen Harrell, Erwin, Tenn.; six grandchildren; three nephews; and one niece. Valley, Erwin, Tenn., was in charge.

Issac N. Whitaker Jr. - WATAUGA
Isaac Newton Whitaker Jr., Mountain Home, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Whitaker was a Watauga native and a son of the late Isaac N. and Elsie E. Sellers Whitaker Sr. He retired from Caterpillar Corp. He also was a minister. Mr. Whitaker was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the European Theater. He was awarded two Purple Hearts while in Italy. He was a Christian. Survivors include one brother, Albert Whitaker, Jonesborough. Dillow-Taylor was in charge.
