Mildred Bryant Ponder, 90, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Dyersburg, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003 at Harmony Nursing Home in Chicago.
She was a homemaker, a member of Bells Methodist Church and a former teacher at Dyersburg Beauty School.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Layman officiating. Burial will be in Palestine Cemetery in Dyersburg.

The family will receive visitors at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Joe Pleasant, 72, of Dyersburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003 at his residence.
He was a retired mechanic for Goodyear and a member of West Dyersburg Church of Christ.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at West Dyersburg Church Christ with Brother Paul Helton officiating. Dyersburg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The family will receive visitors from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Gwendolyn West McKissack, 66, of Bartlett, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003 at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis.
She was a social worker, a member of Bartlett Baptist Church, attended Union University and Memphis State University, where she received a bachelor's degree.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of J.W. Curry & Son Funeral Home with Chaplain Ed Schulker officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Dyersburg.

The family will receive visitors from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Rev. Melvin L. Smith

Rev. Melvin Smith, 76, of Maury City, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003 at Crockett County Nursing Center in Alamo.
He was a retired construction worker and a minister for 45 years.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at First New Baptist church in Maury City with the Rev. Michael Dupree officiating. Burial will be in Poston Grove Cemetery in Maury City.

The family will receive visitors at 1-6 p.m. Saturday at H.H. Hudson Funeral Home in Dyersburg.

Survivors include his wife, I.A. Smith of Maury City; two daughters, Stella Gavin and Martha Snipes, both of Maury City; two sons, Jimmy Twitty of Ripley and Louis T. Jelks of Humboldt; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Willie Mai Dew, 78, of Newbern, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003 at Dyersburg Regional Medical Center.
She was a homemaker, a member of Main Street Church of Christ and a lifetime member of Goldwing Road Riders Association.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of  Johnson Funeral Home with Brother Olin Kern officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Dyersburg.

The widow of Herbert Dew, survivors include three daughters, Joan Rose of Dyersburg, Sondra Simmons of Newbern and Paula Walker of RoEllen; a son, Wayne Dew of Hornbeak; three sisters, Ruby Peevyhouse of Newbern, Mary Kate Plunk of Rives and Lucy Spain of Hobart, Ind.; two brothers, Albert Fultz of Halls and Cecil Fultz of Humboldt; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Leslie Simmons, Michael Walker, Chauncey Dew, Brandon Dew, Dennis Peevyhouse, Allison Peevyhouse, Richard Fultz and William Parnell. Honorary pallbearers will be William Nicks, Hank Gray and Danny Carpenter.

Jerry Thomas Matheny, 60, of Wynnburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 20032 at Baptist Hospital in Union City.
He was a retired factory worker.

Services will be in at 2 p.m. today in the Tiptonville chapel of Dyersburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Chip Davis officiating. Burial will be in New Haven Cemetery in Ridgely.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Plunkett Matheny of Wynnburg; two daughters, Jerrie Jeanice Thomson of Dresden and Melissa Darlene Matheny of Wynnburg; a son, David Alan Matheny of Jackson; a sister, Brooksie Nelle Haggard of Parsons; two brothers, Marion Lee Matheny of Newbern and Lester Eugene Matheny of Campbellsburg, Ky.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Matheny Lovett; and two brothers, J.W. Matheny and Billy Matheny.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Joe Jones, Johnny Ward, Jackie Deason, Leroy Cook, Larry Watts, Mark Farley and Johnny Turner.

He was a former employee of BTR in Frederick, Okla., and Casino Aztar in Caruthersville, Mo. He was a graduate of Wichita State University in Kansas, a Methodist and a member of the Frederick Jaycees and the Society of Human Resources Management.

Services are at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Dyersburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Wade Cox officiating. Burial will be Wednesday in Frederick Memorial Cemetery in Frederick.

The family will receive visitors at 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

He was a tool and die supervisor for Anderson-Hickey Manufacturing Company and a member of Palestine United Methodist Church. Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Halls Funeral Home. Burial will be Palestine Cemetery near Halls.

Margaret C. Pope, 91, of Dyersburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003 at Dyersburg Regional Medical Center. She was a retired teacher and supervisor for the Dyer County School Systems, a member of Dyersburg First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Dyersburg Garden Club, Retired Teacher's Association, instrumental in starting libraries in Dyer County schools and the library of the Dyer County High School was named in her honor last year. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel of  Johnson Funeral Home with Dr. Phillip Cook and Brother Oscar Bruce officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Dyersburg. The family will receive visitors at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

The Rev. James C. Pledge, 64, formerly of Dyersburg, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003.
He was a retired employee of Mutual of Omaha Companies, member of Bells Campground Baptist Church, and pastored several churches in the Knoxville area.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mynatt Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Anderson, the Rev. Herman Faddis, the Rev. Tommy Pledge and the Rev. Bill McCarter officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bells Campground.

The family will receive visitors at 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

He was a retired restaurant operator and farmer, and was also an Army veteran of World War II.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Halls Funeral Home. The burial will be at Eureka Cemetery near Gates.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Keystone Church of God near Tiptonville with the Rev. Tim Nichols officiating. Burial will be in Haynes Memorial Gardens.

Jewell Dean 'Judy' Chambers Simpson

Jewell Dean "Judy" Chambers Simpson, 81, of Heber Springs, Ark., formerly of Memphis, died Thursday, Jan. 16 at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock.
She was born in Unionville and graduated from Dyersburg High School. She retired after 35 years of civilian service at the Naval Air Station in Millington.

A memorial service and burial were Sunday at Memorial Park in Memphis.

Robert Allen White, 55, of Newbern, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union City.
He was a farmer.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of  Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Perry Grills officiating. Burial will be in McCorkle Cemetery in Newbern.

The family will receive visitors at 10:30 a.m. today at the funeral home.
