Elmer C. Coppock, 94, of Maynardville, died May 26. He was a member of Valley Grove Baptist Church for 68 years and was also a deacon. He was a lifelong farmer and was preceded in death by wives, Genee Rutherford Coppock and Ruby Hutchison Coppock; daughter, Shirley Jean Coppock. William F. “Bill” Cox, 68, of Heiskell, died May 27. He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Andersonville but attended Island Home Baptist Church in Norris. He retired from Russell Pest Control and was a U.S. Air Force veteran who served during the Korean Conflict. Elizabeth R. Blackmon Garrard, 80, formerly of Maynardville, died May 23 at Manorcare Healthcare Center in Kokomo, Ind., where she had lived since 1962. She was a former member of Loyston Baptist Church and later attended Valley Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John S. Garrard, and brother, Ben David Blackmon. Ruth Palmer Holmes, 100, formerly of Maynardville, died May 26 in Long Beach, Calif., where she had been living. Lucille Hughes, 95, of Fountain City, died May 25 at St. Mary’s. She was a former member of Broadway Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo Hughes. She ran Highland Drive Kindergarten in Fountain City for many years; she loved music; during WWII, she ran her husband’s sales route with Sunshine Biscuit Co. Virginia M. “Ginnie” Keller, 80, died May 31 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was a longtime member of Old Beverly Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by her first husband, John E. Hubbs; second husband, Joe Keller; and daughter, Cynthia R. Eledge. Ilse L. Papa, 76, of Maynardville, formerly of Thibodaux, La., died May 30 at her home. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, George Papa. She was born in Bergreichenstein, Czechoslovakia, formerly Austria, Hungary territory. Ailor Mortuary.
James Ragain, 83, of LaFollette, died May 30 at the St. Mary’s Medical Center of Campbell County. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy. He participated in the invasion of Okinawa. He retired with 37 years of service with BellSouth and was a member of Jacksboro Masonic Lodge. Mr. Ragain played on the Knoxville High School national champion football team in 1937. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Sowder Ragain; son, Mark Christopher Ragain. John A. "Jack" Croes, 88, of Fountain City, died March 26 in Ft. Myers, Fla. He leaves his wife, Mary Lou Acuff Croes, and others. Mr. Croes came to Knoxville in 1938 after graduating with a degree in chemical engineering from Lehigh University. He worked for the Worthington Corporation as a sales engineer. He was active in the Concord Yacht Club, and enjoyed sailboat racing and woodworking. Gentry-Griffey Chapel.
Bill "Dub" Crowley, 63, of Heiskell, died March 28 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in LaFollette. He was a U.S. Army veteran who also served in the Tennessee National Guard. He was owner of Powell Amusement Company. Mary Lynne Fletcher, 70, of Powell, died March 30 at her home. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Powell and a former president of the Knoxville Women’s Club. Eva Focht died March 28 at her home in Fountain City. She was an artist who painted outdoor scenes from Cumberland Gap to the Great Smoky Mountains. She studied commercial and fine arts at Winthrop College in South Carolina and at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh where she met and married
her former husband, Ralph Focht, also an artist. She is survived by her daughter, Terri Welty, and granddaughter, Melissa New, also of Fountain City, and her sister, Mary Smith of Georgia. Other survivors include a son, David Focht, and grandsons, Shane and Jason Focht of Ohio; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held March 30 at Fountain City Presbyterian Church.
Dora Eblen Fritts, 91, of Fountain City, died March 31 at St. Mary’s. She was a member of First Baptist Church Fountain City and was preceded in death by husbands, Ernest Jackson Fritts and Ed Wyrick. Mynatt’s.

Mary Isabella Cole Harris, the oldest member of Washington Presbyterian Church, died March 31 at age 97 at her home. She was retired from Standard Knitting Mills and was a longtime member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Don and Ida Harris. Stevens Mortuary.
Billy H. Hill, 75, of Fountain City, died April 4 at NHC Healthcare Ft. Sanders. He was a member of Smithwood Baptist Church, a longtime resident of Gibbs Road and an active Democrat in the 34th ward. He was predeceased by his wife, Sue Hill, and daughter, Gwenda Pope. He is survived by his daughter, Vickie Hill and grandson, David Pope. Family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Gentry-Griffey Chapel.
