LAUDERDALE COUNTY, TENNESSEE DEATH NOTICES FROM 2003

Bertha Marie Jones, 80, of Powell, died May 20 at UT Medical Center. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Dayton. She was a commercial pilot for 20 years and a major in the Civil Air Patrol. She enjoyed songwriting and singing with the Sweet Adelines. She was preceded in death by husband, pilot Guy M. Jones. Survivors include daughter, Geralden Turner; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Deborah Jones, James and Lynn Jones, Ron Jones, 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Edith Deliah Walker Lucas, 59, of Cleveland and a former resident of Knoxville, died May 20. She was of the Baptist faith and worked as an in-home nurse with Best Friends Services. Survivors include her mother, Dora Dean Walker; three children and spouses, Angela and Steve Longley, Kevin Gentry, Daryl and Tosha Lucas; four grandchildren; four brothers, Claude, Lonnie, Jess and Daryl Walker; sister, Kathy Walker. Ora Howard (O.H.) Mink, 75, of Knoxville, died May 21 at St. Mary’s. He was a member of Black Oak Heights Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carolyn Rhea Mink; daughters and spouses, Debby and Dennis Ailor, Tammy and Mike Hatmaker, Donna Flohr; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Opal McDonald. Reneva Jane Stout, 83, of Powell, died May 16 at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. She was of the Baptist faith and is survived by her husband of 58 years, Leonard Stout; son, Leonard J. Stout; two grandchildren. Highland South Memorial Park.

Cubert R. Voiles, 83, of Knoxville, died May 21. He was a member and deacon of Lincoln Park Baptist Church. He was an avid golfer and retiree of Meade Corporation after 34 years of service. He had served on several boards to improve the quality of life for handicapped citizens. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Nora Woodard Voiles; and a son, Kevin Bradley. Survivors: wife of 13 years, Sallie May Voiles; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard R. and Mary Voiles, Victor and Brenda Voiles, Verlyn Gene Voiles; brothers, Leonard Voiles, Bill Woods, Robert Voiles; sister, Gladys Smith. Roy Henderson Waggoner, 82, of Little Valley Road, Maynardville, died May 19 at Fort Sanders. He was a member of Little Valley Baptist Church, a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and a retired employee of Dempster Brothers. Survivors include daughter, Carol Browder; son and spouse, Meryl and Betty Waggoner; four grandsons; three great-grandchildren; brother, Clayton Waggoner; sisters, Nell West, Louise Laws, Janie Janeway, Mary Alice Janeway. Robert E. Whitson, 90, of Powell, died May 21 at NHC. He was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Cherokee Textile Mills. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Janie L. White Whitson; sons and daughters-in-law, James K. “Bud” and Reba Whitson, Robert L. “Bob” and Pam Whitson; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Mynatt’s.

Elma Black, 94, of Powell, died May 1 at NHC HealthCare. She was retired from Sears. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fremont Black. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Shirley Black of Powell. Weaver Funeral Home.

Cecil W. Carson, 88, of Powell, died April 29. Stubblefield Funeral Home, Morristown.

Donald Ray Caylor, 50, of Oak Ridge died April 29. He was a huge UT football fan and enjoyed NASCAR. Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.

Herman Cope, 70, of Sneedville, died April 26. He was a driver for Mayes Bus Lines and a veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by wife, Velma Cope. Survivors include children and spouses: Faye and Barry Garrett, Kathy and Don Stinnett, Bobbie and Johnny Buckner, Carol and Charles Erranton, Rita and Randy Dozier, Patricia and Lindel Scott, Curtis Jones and Debbie and Eddie Hunter. Pauline Damewood Davis, 74, of Corryton, died April 30 at St. Mary’s Hospice. She was a member of Carter Road Baptist Church. Survivors include husband, Hubert Davis; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and J.W. Whitaker; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Gayle Davis, James and Dawn Davis, all of Corryton. Ailor Mortuary.

Myrtle Frances Childress Donaldson, 99, of Knoxville, died April 27 at NHC. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Powell and was preceded in death by husband, Jack Donaldson; sons, David A., Jackie and Edward Donaldson; daughter, Gladys Donaldson; daughter-in-law, Alma Shackleferd Donaldson. Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Minnie Lou and Paul Wood and Rose Alice Donaldson, of Knoxville; daughter-in-law, Ella Donaldson. Mynatt’s.

Virginia Rose "Jenny" Johnston Elrod, 88, of Powell, died April 30 at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. She was preceded in death by husband, James R. Elrod. Member of Cornerstone Christian Church. Survivors include daughter, Virginia Delores Conner Russell; James H. Conner; grandson, Jack Russell Jr. Rose Mortuary.

Oscar Frost Jr., 64, of Powell, died April 28 at St. Mary’s. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Powell and a lifetime member of Reinforced Iron Workers Local 426 in Detroit. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Paula; son, David Frost; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Mark Claiborne; brother, Don Frost; sister, Juanita Dew. Lynnhurst Greenwood Chapel.

William H. Gerst, 71, of Halls, died April 30 at home after a courageous battle with a stroke and cancer. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by parents, James and Ella Gerst, and a sister, Geneva Chab. Survived by devoted wife of 51 years, Bobbie Gerst; daughter and son-in-law, Ethel and Gordy Noe; grandsons who were the pride of his life, Chris and Austin Noe; brother, Harold Wayne Gerst; sisters, Cleo Campbell and Bernice Cole. He was a Marine for more than 25 years, serving in Vietnam where he received the Vietnamese Service Medal, and two Crosses of Gallantry, one with the Palm and one with the Bronze Star. He was injured in Vietnam in 1967 and retired from service in 1970. He later retired from UT Police Department in 1990. He was an NRA certified firearms instructor, a member of the UT Police Pistol Team, member of Volunteer State Honor Guard, and the Marine Corp League. He was a dear friend and part-time employee of Pioneer Heating and Air Conditioning until his illness in 2001. The family would like to thank UT Hospice and all who visited, called, sent cards and prayers, and simply thought of him during his illness. Marie Horton Hatmaker, 91, of Clinton, died April 30 at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge. She was a member of the Lake City United Methodist Church and the Order of Easter Star. She taught school in Anderson County for 52 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Hobert" Hatmaker. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Anna Lou Horner of Powell. Jean Faye Payne Johnson, 41, of Halls, died April 28. Survivors include husband, David Johnson; daughters and son-in-law, Kasey and Daniel Horne and Stacy Johnson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jane and Terry Wolfe, Sue and Robert White, Linda and Bill Ridner, Janice and Leonard McFalls and Patty and Victor Gosnell; brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter and Carol Rudd, David and Kathy Payne, and Archie Payne. Mary Mattie Karnes, 78, of Corryton, died April 28. She grew up as a member of Rutherford Memorial United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Ray Leslie; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Tim Mitchell; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kim Karnes; brother and sister-in-law, ford and Jo Ann Loy; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and W. Lillian Mae Long, 80, of South Knoxville, died April 26. She was a longtime employee of Meals on Wheels Catering Service. preceded in death by husband, William A. Long, and son, Junior. Survivors include sons Fredrick Marshal Long, Pete Long and wife, Sherry; Curtis Glen Long and wife, Teresa; and Everette Long and Shelley; daughters, Trula Jane Wright and husband, Johnny; Carolyn Hahn Pruitt and husband, Robert; Mickie Gibbs and Harley Lauderdale; and Margaret and husband Don Ballenger; step daughter, Linda Sue Perry; brother, Fred E. Walter Howard Martin, 77, died April 28. A graduate of Knoxville High School and UT, he served in the U.S. Army in WWII and in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War. He was with WBIR radio and television for 37 years and was the on-air personality with Doc Johnson (Date with Doc). He was active in local theater and appeared in several episodes of The Heartland Series. He was preceded in death by his wife, V. Carolyn Martin. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Karen Martin Campbell and C. Phillip M. Campbell. Rose Mortuary.

Estelee Griffey "Essie" McCammon, 92, of Knoxville, died April 30. She was a member of Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Fred McCammon. They were married for 73 years before his death in 2002. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Dixie and Wheeler Moulton. Gentry-Griffey Chapel.

Mildred Haynes McLarrin, 92, of Knoxville, died April 28 on her birthday. She was preceded in death by husband, Roy W. McLarrin; sister, Zena Harrington, and brother, Milton T. Haynes Jr. She was a member of Fountain City United Methodist Church and a sales lady for S.H. Georges Company and Dunlap Luggage Shop before her retirement. She is survived by sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth H. and Dr. J.C. Ogg of Powell. Gentry-Griffey Chapel.

Maxie E. Mink, 90, of Knoxville, died April 27 at NHC Healthcare. She attended Oak Chapel American Christian Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Mink. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Coy and Virginia Mink, Hoy and Iris Mink, Guy Mink. Claiborne Funeral Home.

Robert David Nelson, 84, of Knoxville, died April 30 at St. Mary’s. He was a member of Fountain City United Methodist Church, Fountain City Lions Club and a graduate of LSU with a degree in forestry. He was a veteran of WWII and was retired from TVA. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Louise Bury Nelson; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert D. and Anne Nelson II, Daniel Bury and Pat Nelson, Paris. Gentry-Griffey Chapel.

Mabel V. Faddis Shipley, of Jefferson City, formerly of Knoxville, died April 29 at St. Mary’s. She was a talented musician, having studied, played and taught piano most of her life. She was a longtime church pianist and organist, Sunday School teacher and youth worker. She assisted her husband in developing a youth choir and youth orchestra. She worked in the division of personnel for TVA before taking early retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, John Robert Shipley, and daughter, Linda Shipley Blackburn. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Robert M. and Barbara Shipley, John D. and Terry Shipley; brother, James E. Faddis. Rose Mortuary.

Octavia Jefferis Smith, 79, of Fountain City, died April 27 at Hillcrest North. She was a former member of Belmont Heights Baptist Church and presently a member of Smithwood Baptist. Survivors include husband, Earl Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Tom Coile, sons and daughter-in-law, Terry and Nancy Smith and Jeff Smith; sister, Georgetta Herrell. Mynatt’s.

Anna K. "Pat" Turner, 81, of Knoxville, died April 29 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd and was preceded in death by husband, Omer H. Turner. Survivors include a sister, Lois K. Sutton. Rose Mortuary.
