Dolph L. Brown, 91, died Dec. 21, 2004. He dropped out of high school at about age 16 to open his first restaurant and had a successful career in the restaurant business, including opening the Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in Knox County. Darrel W. Holt died Dec. 20, 2004. He served three years in the U.S. Military during WWII, where he was a trumpeter in the Air Corps Band, was a bugler and served in General Patton’s army. A self-made man, he earned his way through Washington State University by playing trumpet in small clubs in addition to the GI Bill. After working 12 years in commercial broadcasting and advertising, he earned a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and joined the Radio-Television-Film faculty at the University of Kansas. In 1971, Dr. Holt became the first permanent head of the Department of Broadcasting in the recently formed College of Communications at UT. He retired in 1988. He is survived by wife of 52 years, Kathryn; daughters: Randi Huntsman, Sandra Holt, Lori Lambert, and their families. Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.
Claude L. Longmire, 88, of Corryton, died Dec. 21, 2004. Member of Rutherford Memorial United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge #321. Charles Robertson Mangam, 92, of Knoxville, died Dec. 22, 2004. He was a retired UT English professor and served overseas in Army Intelligence during WWII.
