Leroy “Bud” Summers, 81, died suddenly Dec. 15, 2004. Of the Baptist faith; veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II; retired from Southern Railroad. Survived by wife, Joy Sturgeon Strader Summers; stepdaughter, Marsha Phillips; siblings; Dan Summers, Ben Summers, Frances Strange, Edna Widener and Ruby Armstrong; and their families. Patricia “Patty” S. Thompson, 55, of Fountain City, died Dec. 11, 2004. Member and elder of Fountain City Presbyterian Church; past president of Akima Club and the Nativity Pageant Board. Survivors: husband, James L. Thompson Jr.; children: Meridith Thompson, Adam Thompson; mother, Jean Smith; father-in-law, James Thompson Sr.; sisters: Carolyn C. Smith, Ann S. Mildred B. Wood, 93, passed away Dec. 14, 2004. Member of Central Baptist Church of Fountain City, American Rose Society, Tennessee Rose Society. preceded in death by her husband, Everette C. Wood. J.B. Wyrick, 72, of Luttrell, passed away Dec. 16, 2004. Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Linda Gail and Jackie Atkins; special friend, Betty Sue Herron. Cooke Mortuary.

Patricia Chapman Ayers, 58, of Powell, passed away Dec. 6. Of the Baptist faith and loved the outdoors. Retired from Kroger after 28 years as the lead floral clerk. Survived by husband, John Ayers; children, Renee Thompson and Hope Passmore and their families; stepchildren, Scott Ayers, Richard Maples, Dawn Titangelo, Lori Lynn and their families. Maria Vineyard Shew-make Betson, 60, died Dec. 4. Of the Baptist faith and ICU nurse for 33 years. preceded in death by former husband, Herman Shewmake. Survived by husband, Craig Betson; sons, Tripp and Landon Shewmake; stepson, Bill Shewmake, and their families; father, Levi Vineyard; aunt, Nancy Cowen; sisters, Marcia League and Melin-da Waddell. Edna Mae Seal Brewer, 83, passed away Dec. 6. She worked until 2002 and raised four children while working at Cherokee Textile Mills for 38 years. preceded in death by first husband, Woodrow Brewer, and second husband, John R. Brewer. Bryan Lee Chandler, 47, of Corryton, passed away Dec. 7. The Rev. Horace Justus Dyer, 86, of Luttrell, passed away Dec. 8. Retired from Tennessee Belting and Supply. Member of Hickory Valley Baptist Church. Had pastored Fairview Baptist, Cedar Ford and Hickory Valley churches in Union County and New Blackwell Baptist Church in Grainger County. Robert Taylor Gammon, 91, of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Halls. WWII veteran; taught commercial photography and graphic arts in Knoxville City Schools; sales at Screen Art Studios; prepared exhibits at McClung Museum; art director for WBIR-TV. preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Knudsen Gammon; second wife: Juanita Campbell Gammon of Halls; son, James Howard Gammon. Orval Ward Scarff, 86, passed away Dec. 8. In 1979 he moved to Powell where he became involved with the Christian Community Concerns Committee and Contact Tele-ministries. In 1988 he was selected as Powell Man of the Year. He was a deacon at First Baptist Powell. In recognition of her community and civic endeavors, that included Akima Club, Ronald McDonald House and James White Fort Association, she was awarded First Lady of Knoxville. preceded in death by husband, Russell Allen.
