LAUDERDALE COUNTY, TENNESSEE DEATH NOTICES FROM 2004

Conda E. Coppock, 89, of Maynardville, passed away April 10. Lifelong member of Valley Grove Baptist Church and Sunday School teacher for 45 years. He was a full-time farmer and also worked at Marlock. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Hutchison Coppock; infant daughter, Velma Jean Coppock; grandson, Joey Carroll. Survivors: daughter, Glenda Carroll; son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Janet Coppock; grandsons, Dagan and Holden Coppock; granddaughter and husband, Lynette and Mike Wolfenbarger; two great-grandchildren. Luther B. “L.B.” Coward, 81, of Halls, passed away April 14 at his home. Member of the Primitive Baptist faith. Survived by wife of 53 year, Roberta Coward; children and spouses: Connie Ramsey, Robert “Buck” and Susie Coward, Steven Coward; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Mynatt Funeral Home.

Alberta Kelley Crowe, 91, of Knoxville, formerly of Indianapolis, passed away April 16 at Hillcrest North. She was the widow of James H. Crowe and a member of Unity of Indianapolis. Survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rosalie and Edwin Jenkins; granddaughter and spouse, Heather and Jeremy Arnwine; grandsons, Eric Jenkins, Christopher Jenkins; great-granddaughter, Lily Grace Arnwine. Ruth L. Elliott, 92, of Powell, died April 13 at Brakebill Nursing Home. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church and retired from Palm Beach Company. Proceeded in death by daughter, Billie Sue Elliott; and sister, Geneva Pridemore. Survived by: son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Marge Elliott; daughter, Doris Elliott; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.

Ruby B. Gibson, age 75 of Knoxville, died April 17 at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. Mrs. Gibson is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Beverly Gibson of Corryton; granddaughter and spouse, Dennise and Joseph Howard; and great-granddaughter, Emma Lauren Howard. John Edward Harris Sr. age 77, of Concord, died April 12 at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center. He was an educator in the Knox County Schools where he served as teacher, assistant principal, and retired from Bearden Middle School as principal. Mr. Harris also served as the minister of music for several area churches and was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during World War II. In his retirement, he taught French classes at the O’Connor Senior Center. He is survived by his wife, Nina Harris; daughter and son-in-law, Colette and Gerald Chambers; son & daughter-in-law, John E. Jr. and Resha Harris; four grandchildren. Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.

Nola Hill, 91, of Knoxville, passed away April 12 at St. Mary’s. She was a Baptist. preceded in death by husband, Elmer Hill; son, Joe David Hill. Survived by son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Teresa Hill; daughters, Melba and Beverly Lawson; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; special friend, Marjorie Johnson. McCarty Mortuary.

Jesse James Humphrey, 88, of Heiskell, passed away April 14 at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. He was a member of Deep Springs Baptist Church and was retired from the U.S. Forestry Dept. During his employment he worked at the Heiskell Fire Tower. He was a WWII veteran with the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by wife, Mary Helen Humphrey. Survivors include sons and spouses: David L. and Donna Humphrey, Donnie C. and Bess Humphrey; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home.

Clyde Paul Leming, 81, of Corryton, passed away April 16 at St. Mary’s. He was a member of Rutherford Memorial United Methodist Church, Corryton Masonic Lodge, and IBEW for 60 years. Retired from TVA, he was a WWII veteran. Survived by wife of 55 years, Margaret Leming; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Michael Graves; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Carrol Faye Braden Lowe, 57, of Corryton, passed away April 14 after an 11-year battle with cancer. Member of Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church. She and her late husband, Gerald C. Lowe, owned and operated Lowe’s Garage and Towing Company. She is survived by children and spouses: Freddie and Becky Braden, Missy and Robby Chadwell, Shannon and April Braden; eight grandchildren. Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.

Anna Mae Lusk, 87, of Knoxville, passed away Sunday evening at Holston Health Care. She was a member of Washington Pike United Methodist Church and was a Red Cross volunteer. During the war she gave up many hours meeting the troop trains as they passed through Knoxville. She volunteered as a pink lady at Ft Sanders Hospital, was a committed Den Mother to Cub Pack 3026. She was one of the first employees of the S&W cafeteria. She is preceded in death by her son, Chris Lusk. Survived by her husband of 68 years, Harley Lusk; son and daughter-in-law, Gilbert and Sandi Lusk; daughter-in-law Jan Lusk; grandchildren Elizabeth, Jeffrey, Dean and Gregory Lusk. Charles Newman Luttrell, 77, of Knoxville, passed away April 12 at Baptist Hospital. He was a member of the Sand Branch United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dorothy; children and spouses: Charles Jr. and Geneva Luttrell, Carolyn Kirby, Marlene Luttrell; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Clarence “Red” Luttrell; sister, Elsie Grant. Frances M. Newman, 83, of Knoxville, died April 13 at her home. She was a charter member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church. She devoted her life to her family and loved working in her flowers. Survived by her husband of 62 years, Jack C. Newman; daughters, Ann Brown and Nancy Newman; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Joan Newman; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Ray Watson; sister-in-law and nephew, Charlotte and Dave Coile. Mary Heaton Newman, 78, was interred April 15 at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Cemetery. She is survived by husband, Dr. Lee Newman; daughter and son-in-law, Kristy Anita and Don Rochat; granddaughter and husband, Emilee and Michael Dockery; great-grandson, Jared Dockery.

Ruby L. Norman, 80, of Knoxville, passed away April 11 at her home. Former member of Norwood United Methodist Church. Survived by husband of 57 years, Homer B. Norman; son and daughter-in-law, John and Linda Norman of Powell; granddaughter, Allison Norman; brother, Bishop T. Loy Jr. of Maynardville; sister-in-law, Mildred L. Norman; caregiver, Lisa Bunch. William Howard Norris, 77, of Powell, passed away April 11 at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. Former employee of Pet Dairy and Norris Food Market. Survived by wife, Shirley Braden Norris; children and spouses, Stephen and Carol Norris, Gail and Glenn Kitts, Jetta Blanton; stepchildren and spouses, Pom and Janet Graves, Lisa Ramsey; four grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild. Bob G. Sexton, 67, of Knoxville, passed away April 10 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a Baptist. Survivors: daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Sinan Mungan; son and daughter-in-law, James Robert “Bob” and Kelly Sexton; three grandchildren. Stevens Mortuary.

Harold John “Jack” Wilkening, who celebrated his 86th birthday on April 1, died April 17 following an extended illness. A native of Chicago, Mr. Wilkening was married to Ann Morton for 60 years. Together they raised three children who gave them seven grandchildren. Mr. Wilkening served four years in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked for Dempster Brothers Inc. for 38 years, retiring in 1984. An avid woodworker, Mr. Wilkening made numerous keepsakes for family and friends. He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Knoxville for more than 45 years. His survivors include son and daughter-in-law, John Denny and Lynn Wilkening; daughter and son-in-law Mary Ann and Robert Dement; daughter and son-in-law, Jean and John Druckenmiller; seven grandchildren. Andy Atkins, 90, of Luttrell, passed away Aug. 10 at Ft. Sanders. Survived by wife of 71 years, Emily Inklebarger Atkins; daughter, Andra Atkins; sons and spouses, G.M. and Lodean Atkins, Vaughn and Helen Atkins; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Ailor Mortuary.

Roscoe Bruner, 79, of Powell, passed away Aug. 7 at Windwood Health and Rehab Center. Veteran in the U.S. Navy. John Wallace Carswell, 45, passed away Aug. 8. He was a 1981 graduate of Carson-Newman College having majored in medical technology. He attended Chilhowee Hills Baptist Church and was administrator for Quality Home Health, an avid motorcycle rider and a member of the Harley Davidson Owners Group. Survivors include his wife, Carol Ann Carswell; daughter, Jessica Jean Carswell; son, Matthew Bond Carswell; two stepchildren; mother, Frankie Carswell Ratcliffe. Mynatt Funeral Home.

William “Bucky” Martin Chambers, 67, passed away Aug. 8 at his home. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Mabel Whetsell Chambers; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Debbie Trent, James and Robin Trent; sister, Barbara Martin; sister and brother-in-law, Faye and Michael Moriarty. Mary Eichstad, 82, of Powell, formerly of Youngstown, Ohio, passed away Aug. 13 at her home. She was of the Lutheran faith. preceded in death by husband, William Eichstadt. Survived by daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Frank Brown Jr. of Powell; two grandchildren. Gentry-Griffey Chapel.

Daniel Cread Graves, 49, of Corryton, passed away Aug. 12. He was well-known by his friendly smile and helpful ways. He was a lifelong member of Clear Springs Baptist Church and a 1973 graduate of Gibbs High School. He was preceded in death by his father, Clay Graves. Survivors include his sons, Kevin and Phillip Graves; mother, Virginia Graves; brothers and wives, Ron and Brenda Graves, Mike and Karen Graves; companion, Angela Dishman. Mynatt Funeral Home.

Ben H. Hudson Jr., 83, died Aug. 10 at St. Mary’s. Member of Oakwood Baptist Church where he taught the Dependable Class, was a deacon and choir member. He was owner and operator of West Drug Store for 30 years and a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, LueCretia Hudson; son and daughter-in-law, Darryl and Linda Hudson; daughter, Cheryl Hudson; six grandchildren; brothers and wives, Harry and Mary Hudson, Earl and Martha Hudson, Y.C. Vivian Clevenger Irwin, 69, of Powell, passed away Aug. 13, at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. Member of Greenway Baptist Church. Survived by sister, Shirley Merritt; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie and Rusty Carpenter, James E. and Liz Clevenger, Ronald and Jewell Clevenger. Mynatt Funeral Home.

Albert J. Lamb, 81, of Maynardville, passed away Aug. 8 at St. Mary’s. Member of Union Baptist Church, veteran of World War II and member of J.C. Baker Lodge # 720, Scottish Rite. He owned and operated Lamb’s Texaco Service Center on Ailor Gap Road before retiring. preceded in death by wife, Jessie Wanda Collins Lamb. Survivors include children and spouses: Vickie Joyce and Michael Riffey, Albert Steven and Tammy Lamb; 13 grandchildren. Ailor Mortuary.

William R. Lester passed away Aug. 11 after a long battle with cancer. Member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran. Gilford Tate Trotter Jr., 82, of Powell, passed away Aug. 8. He was a member of Sharon Baptist Church and the Tennessee Association of Professional Surveyors. Veteran of WWII.
