LAUDERDALE COUNTY, TENNESSEE DEATH NOTICES FROM 2004

Mattie Otha Hurst, 103, of Fountain City, passed away April 2. She was a member of Knoxville Primitive Baptist Church for many years. She was preceded in death by husband of 61 years, Floyd James Hurst; four brothers and seven sisters. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Mynatt Funeral Home.

Iva Lee Johnson Janeway, 83, of New Tazewell, passed away March 30 at UT Medical Center. She was a member of Straight Creek Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Janeway. Survivors include sister-in-law, Maggie Johnson of Powell; special friend, Wanda Trent of Tazewell; special nieces, Janice Loveday of Powell and Edna Nowling of Knoxville. Coffey Funeral Home.

Edward F. Mackey, 81, of Knoxville, passed away March 30 at St. Mary’s. He was of the Catholic Faith; veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the VFW. preceded in death by son: Eddie Mackey. Survivors: wife, Mary Ellen Singleton Mackey; son: Dennis Mackey; brothers, John Mackey and wife, Jenny; Charles Mackey. Rose Mortuary Broadway Chapel.

Edith M. McSpadden, 75, of Knoxville, passed away April 1 at Baptist Hospital. She was a member of Cumberland Baptist Church where she served as director of the Sunday School programs. She retired from Knox County Schools with more than 40 years as a teacher. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Samuel Boyce McSpadden; children and spouses: Sam Jr. and Brenda McSpadden, Bill and Donna McSpadden, Mary McSpadden; four grandchildren; brothers, Jim, Alvin, Everett, Garfield, Richard and Charles McCarter; sisters, Ruby Brookshire, Linda Cook, Margaret Peterson. Margaret Rowena Bailey Miller, 85, of North Knoxville, passed away March 30. She was a member of North Hills Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Talmadge Miller, and others. Rose Mortuary.

Larry “Moose” Moncier, 69, of Oliver Springs, passed away March 26. His daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and David Plunk, live in Halls. Mr. Moncier was a Mason and a member of The Lord’s Church. He retired from Martin Marietta with more than 38 years of service. He had worked at both the Y-12 and K-25 plants as a machinist supervisor. He was a past president of the Oliver Springs Jaycees. Other survivors include his wife of 50 years, Joyce Hays Moncier; son and daughter-in-law, David and Vickie Moncier; mother, Hazel M. Bell Moncier; grandchildren, Samantha and Curtis Plunk of Halls, and Eric Moncier of Oliver Springs.

Harold H. Watkins, 84, of Knoxville, passed away March 31. He was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church and was retired from KUB. He was a WWII veteran. Survivors include wife, Barbara Tipton Watkins; children and spouses: Doug and Kathy Watkins, Richard and Carol Watkins, David and Donna Watkins; eight grandchildren. Mynatt Funeral Home.

Lillian “Lil” Whaley, 87, of North Knoxville, widow of Vernon Whaley, passed away March 31 at St. Mary’s. A member of Marble City Baptist Church and the PBX Telecommunicators of Knoxville. Retired supervisor of PBX department of Fort Sanders Medical Center after 33 years of service. Her hobby was crocheting butterflies for the hospice program at Fort Sanders. She is survived by children and spouses: Charles Norman and Diana Whaley, Peggy and William Clark, Linda and Chris Francis; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Kimberly Lorraine Wise-Cutright, 38, passed away March 29, at St Mary’s as a result of pulmonary heart dysfunction due to congenital scoliosis. She graduated from Firestone High School, Akron, Ohio. Kim was an avid photographer and her interests included church, Girl Scouts, animals, flowers/plants and supporting Cassidy in school and church. Survived by husband, Glenn Cutright; stepdaughter, Cassidy Cutright; mother, Betsy Pence; father, C.E. Pence. Memorial service April 1 at Washington Pike United Methodist Church. Rose Mortuary.

Betty Lee Bates, 72, of Corryton, passed away March 7 at home. Member of Arlington Baptist Church. preceded in death by husband, Gene Bates; sister, Judy Burnette. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Denver Griffey, John and Marilyn Griffey; daughter and partner, Donna Holder and Debi Hyatt; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Jeanette McCloud and Jo Backhaus. Basil Eugene “Gene” Dutton, 84, of Powell, passed away March 10. He was a member of West Lonsdale Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in WWII. He was ordained as a minister and graduated from Clear Creek Baptist College in Pineville, Ky. He pastored many churches including Bells Campground Baptist in Powell. He was founding pastor of Trinity Baptist Church of Powell. preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Louise Watkins Dutton. Survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jim Waggoner and Marsha and Steve Bird; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Alma Frye, Juanita Warwick. Ruby M. Keith Hicks, 95, of Knoxville, passed away March 7 at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. She was a member of Fountain City United Methodist Church, also OES Starlight Chapter 463. preceded in death by her husband, Fred E. Hicks; brothers, Cecil, Lester and Leonard Keith. Betty L. Keck, 77, of Powell, passed away March 10 at St. Mary’s. Member of First Baptist Powell. preceded in death by husband, Elmer; daughter, Becky Keck. Woodhaven Funeral Home.

Verna Smith Lakin, 98, died March 8. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Lakin. A magna cum laude graduate of UT, she taught for more than 30 years for Knox County Schools, mostly at Inskip Elementary. She was a member of the Fountain City Christian Church. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Vanda and Roger Thayer and Patricia and Jack Watson; gour grandchildren; two grandchildren-in-law; two great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Kitts; brother, Fred Smith. Joyce Hewins Luttrell, 82, of Knoxville, passed away March 8 at Select Specialty Hospital. She was a member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church and the OES Chapter 188 where she was a past worthy matron. She also was a licensed pilot and an avid photographer. She loved her Smoky Mountains where she could hike and fish. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Glenn H. Hewins. She is survived by her husband, Bob Luttrell; daughter, Gail Hewins Sharp; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Stanley and Elizabeth Hewins; stepsons and daughters-in-law, David and Margaret Luttrell; Steve and Rosanna Luttrell and Robert Luttrell; grandchildren, Kelly Alkhatib and Bryan Hewins; great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Jack Alkhatib, eight step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Clayton Lee Mathews, 69, of Halls, passed away March 9 at St. Mary’s. Member of Unon Baptist Church of Halls. Survivors include wife, Peggy Ann Mathews; brother and sister-in-law, Buddy and Pat Mathews; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Gayle Mathews; two grandchildren. Mynatt Funeral Home.

Dennis G. “Denny” Merritt, 57, of Luttrell, passed away March 10 at home. Member of Cedar Ford Baptist Church. Retired from Exxon-Mobil Corporation with 30 years of service. Survivors include wife of 39 years, Mary Russell Merritt; children and spouses: Angela and Brian Keaton, Joy and Kelvin Nease, Jimmy and Lisa Merritt; mother, Eileen Needham Merritt; brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Carolyn Merritt; six grandchildren. Marvin JWill Weaver, 70, of Knoxville, died March 10 at Hillcrest Medical Nursing Institute, North. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan. After graduating from Central High School in 1952, he attended the University of Tennessee where he earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1958 and law degree in 1960. He was a veteran of the Upartner in the law firm of Lockett, Slovis and Weaver until 1994, when he became in-house counsel for Hillcrest Medical Nursing Institute Inc., for which he wrote the charter and bylaws in 1960. He continued to represent Hillcrest throughout his life, in addition to serving on its board of directors. preceded in death by his parents, Eston Worth Weaver and Pearl Elizabeth Weaver, and his brother, Archie Floyd Weaver. He is survived by his wife, Martha Jane Lynch Weaver; daughter and son-in-law, Erica and Anthony Adkins; son and daughter-in-law, Nick and Tammy Weaver; four grandchildren; siblings and spouses: Gilmore and Silvia Weaver, Lyman and Juanita Weaver, Dottie Willingham, Ana Lee Keishian, Jessica and Fred Davis and Jeanette and Edell Hearn. Alberta Harriet Ahler, 96, of Knoxville, passed away Feb. 27. She was the oldest living member of Fourth Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Knoxville High School and received both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from UT. She taught drama, Latin and speech at Central High School. She is survived by a niece, Mary Sue Baker Hamilton; nephews, William Ahler and Stephen Ahler. Grace Davis Bliss, 94, of Knoxville and Grainger County, passed away March 3 at Shannondale Health Care Center. She was the widow of James E. Bliss. Member of First Presbyterian Church of Morristown and a longtime member of Fairmont Presbyterian Church of Knoxville. Larry Griffin Calloway, 59, of Heiskell, passed away March 3 at St. Mary’s. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in Vietnam where he received the Bronze Star. He retired from TVA with 30 years of service. Survivors include wife, Becky Clark Calloway; children: James Calloway and friend Amanda Leake; daughters and son-in-law, Laura and Chris Mullins, Katherine Calloway; three grandchildren; siblings and spouses, Dee and Liz Geames, Mary Helen Calloway, Shirley and Mitchell Bowman, Debbie and Bobby Russell, Jim Calloway, Donnie and Shirl Calloway. Edith Cantrell Campbell, 99, of Knoxville, died March 3, at Hillcrest North. She was a longtime member of Norwood Baptist Church. preceded in death by husband, James Paul Campbell. Survivors include children and spouses: Louise Campbell and the late Bob Campbell; Erma & Sam Jones, Libby and the late Leon Bowling, Paul and Linda Campbell, Brenda and John Underwood; 18 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 26 great-great-grandchildren. The Rev. Johnnie Delbert Cash, 84, of Maynardville, passed away March 2 at NHC Healthcare. He was a member of Johnson Chapel Freewill Baptist Church and pastored several area churches for more than 40 years. Retired from Dempster Brothers and Union County school system. He was preceded in death by wife, Blonde Marie McBee Cash; sons, Richard Mac Cash, William Gordon Cash; grandson, Bradley Washam. Isaac David Collins, 20, of Fountain City, passed away in February. He was a Central High graduate, active in JROTC, and a member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church. Betty Joyce Columber, 79, of Knoxville, passed away March 7, at Ft. Sanders Parkwest. She was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Jack Columber. Elva M. Worsham Dawson, 89, passed away March 4. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church since Sept. 17, 1927. She was preceded in death by husband, Edward Dawson Sr.; son, John William Dawson; daughter, Darlene Buckner. Everette L. Greer, 86, died March 3. He served in WWII and was retired after 30 years with the U.S. Post Office North Knoxville Branch. He was a former member of the Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Claudine Carmody Greer, who passed away in 2001.
