Art Nellen
Arthur H. Nellen, Jr. died at Paris Healthcare Tuesday evening, April 10, 2012. He was 88 years old.
A gifted writer, Art began working in the automotive aftermarket after the war. He served as editor of Motor Age Magazine until signing on with J. Walter Thompson. JWT was one of the country’s leading advertising and public relations firms; they put Art to work on the prestigious Ford and Champion Spark Plug accounts. It was there that he created the Car Care Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating motorists about the benefits of performing preventive automotive maintenance and needed repairs. Four decades later, the council continues its educational endeavors. In 1986 Art was the recipient of the prestigious triangle award. It is presented annually to someone that the Association chooses to recognize for unselfish contributions to the automotive industry.
Nellen was still working with the council when he retired to Paris, Tennessee with his wife. He was selected as co-chair of Henry County’s Tennessee Bicentennial Celebration Committee and helped found the Eiffel Tower Day Balloon Festival.
It was Nellen who came up with the idea for PARIS USA, an event that brought representatives from U.S. towns, which shared the name of Paris, for a “summit” hosted by the Paris-Henry County Chamber of Commerce. The group discussed using the name to increase publicity and tourism. After seeing a press release that Art had distributed, officials at Christian Brothers University in Memphis called the Chamber to offer Paris a project from their architecture department, a 65-foot scaled replica of the Eiffel Tower.
As with the Eiffel Tower story, Art loved to create something out of nothing, which was why the creation of PARIS!, with longtime business partner and friend Susan Jones was one of his favorite accomplishments. As co-founder of the magazine in 2004, he sought to showcase the best of Paris, Henry County and the Lake Area.
Art was a caring husband to Mary Ann Nellen and a loving father to Jackie (Dick) Dicerb of Seffner, FL and Nancy Nellen Schilling of Jupiter, FL. He enjoyed his three grandsons, Bryan (Lona) Dicerb of Seffner, FL, Michael Shilling of Jupiter, FL and Joseph Shilling of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and two great-grandsons, Logan and Brayden Dicerb. He will be missed by his sister, Lillian Nellen Conklin (Bill), his nieces Kathy Conklin (Jane) and Cindy (Bob), his great niece, Casey and great nephew, Tyler, all of Baltimore. Art also leaves three step-children, Kathy Lynn Keyes of San Antonio, TX and Tim and Tom Mayberry, both of Angleton, TX, step-grand and great grandchildren.
Art’s friends and neighbors are invited to a celebration of his life at the base of the Eiffel Tower at 6:30 in the evening on Saturday, April 21st.
